I wonder if God has me transitioning from magazine publishing to books? I don't know, but I'm trying to stay busy.

It’s official. I’m co-writing the Michael Sweet autobiography. This’ll be fun. After 2.5 hours of talking/interviewing, it already is. I believe I already have the lead-off story. It’s a good one. I’m confident I’ll use it to start the book – unless he tops that story with another one, of course. I’ve never written a biography before, but I’ve read several and most seem to start off at the present or a certain point in time as an introduction – almost as a reason why you’re reading the book – and then it goes back to the beginning. That’s the general idea I have at this early stage of writing the book. My plan is to cram all this work into a short, concentrated time and crank this book out soon.

What questions should I ask him? What stories should I get him to tell? What do you want to see in a “TELL ALL” Stryper autobiography by its frontman?

“…you don’t know what the future holds…” (lyrics from a song by a certain punk band. I won’t use any names, but their initials are Lust Control). Could book writing be my new career? I don’t know. It’s certainly too early to tell. I have written a novel (Desert High), which I’m confident is a good story and could be made into a movie. That’s my hope and dream for it. Perhaps this Michael Sweet book could be very successful. I hope so. We’ll see.

It’s cool being able to write a book about something that I know a lot about. I still plan on doing my share of research work, but it’s not like I have to start from scratch. This band is very much one of the major reasons why I’ve had a career as a magazine publisher for 26 years. If it wasn’t for this band and their faith in God, I doubt that Christian metal would not have been a phenomenon nor a bandwagon that I jumped on.

Michael Sweet Departs Legendary Rock Band BOSTON to Devote Full Attention to His Longstanding Role as Frontman of Re-emerging Rock Band Stryper

(NASHVILLE, Tennessee) – Stryper frontman and accomplished solo artist Michael Sweet announced his departure from legendary rock band BOSTON today, in order to devote his full attention to his longstanding role as the lead vocalist and lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock outfit Stryper – a band he co-founded in 1983. Sweet joined BOSTON in 2008, sharing lead vocals and playing guitar on a headlining tour of North America, performing the band’s classic hits like “More than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Amanda” and “Don’t Look Back.”

Following the BOSTON tour, Stryper released the 2009 studio album Murder by Pride (featuring a cover of BOSTON’s “Peace of Mind”), which led to a yearlong world tour with all of the original members. In 2010, Stryper released The Covering, and another world tour recently concluded. Stryper is currently in the studio working on an untitled release for 2011, with tour dates already announced for this fall.

“My focus and my loyalty lies with Stryper, the band that I’ve committed almost thirty years of my life to,” says Sweet. “The guys in Stryper are my brothers and I’m excited about our future together. The music of BOSTON helped shape who I am as an artist, and the opportunity to be a part of their musical legacy is overwhelming. It’s been an honor to share the stage with them, and a bigger honor to call them my friends.”

In addition to the increasing demands for Stryper, Sweet has been spending some of his time off the road in Nashville, writing with A-list songwriters such as Blair Daly (Rascal Flatts, Uncle Kracker, Lynyrd Skynyrd), Luke Laird (Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw), Britton Cameron (Steel Magnolia, Lonestar, Eden’s Edge) and others.

“I’ve always loved the writing process and to be able to collaborate with some of the greatest writers in Nashville is an absolutely amazing experience for me,” explains Sweet. “I’m looking forward to many more successful trips to Music City.”

Stryper has sold more than 8 million albums worldwide. The group’s unprecedented 1986 album To Hell with the Devil went double-platinum and was named one of the “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music” by CCM Magazine.

Is anyone else digging the new Stryper album, The Covering?

I just packed up a box of used cell phones as part of our “Save HM Campaign.” As you may have seen in our Nov/D issue, we hooked up with Go Green to Get Green and started a recycled cell phone campaign to raise funds for HM Magazine. We’re still taking phones, by the way. We’ll try to fill up another box over time. This first box is full and going out. Some people sent along their chargers, a couple people the manuals and several extra batteries. These will all be useful (not guaranteed, but…) since some of these will end up as working phones in third world countries. I had one law enforcement guy ask me if it was possible that these would be used somewhere, because he apparently could not turn the device on to erase sensitive information. Some of these phones will be melted down and/or used for spare parts, but some will end up with a user in a third world country. If said user was tech savvy, they could access the information on the phone. A couple people sent gaming systems, old ipods, a labelmaker, a calculator. No brick phones. I wish I would’ve saved mine – even if just for a prop or decoration on a shelf in the office.

Okay, Mr. Bill, from Classic Christian Rock Radio, did an interview with me earlier this month. He’s posted the audio online here.

This past month has been busy, which is why I’ve sucked at blogging regularly. Maybe if more people sent in advice questions I’d be more motivated. Mostly it’s just because I’ve been busy. We announced our move from bi-monthly to quarterly and then rolled out our “Whole Kitchen Sink” marketing plan to advertisers. And now I’m working on a new Kickstarter campaign to coincide with our new HM Magazine app (for iPad, iPhone, Android, etc). Today I’m trying to wrap up filming and editing for the little video that’ll be posted with the kickstarter campaign. Then it’s on to planning the next (April/May/June) issue, covering SXSW and going to press.

At SXSW we are having a showcase, which is filling up. It’ll be on opening night of the music fest (Wednesday, March 16th) at 311 Club on W. 6th Street. It’ll be one of those many “non-sanctioned” events going on in this live music city that week. I’ll post information when we’ve got the lineup settled.

If you haven’t downloaded our current iPhone app, you should check it out. It’s free and it gives a glimpse as to what HM is. The future apps will be for sale and actual issues of the magazine. The best thing about this free one, though, is not only does it access our online edition now (password-protected for subscribers only), but it features an RSS feed of our online news, which is updated all the time. That’s pretty handy to have available on your cell phone/mobile device. Above are a few screen shots of the app.

STRYPER GETS BACK TO THEIR ROOTS ON COVERS-HEAVY SET, ‘THE COVERING’

Christian rockers Stryper are offering fans a head-banging view of who their influences were early on, with the arrival of an almost entire album’s worth of cover songs titled The Covering. Set for release on February 15th via Big3 Records (Sony), the album includes twelve rocking covers, as well as the all-new original tune, “God.” And most significantly, the album marks the return of original bassist Tim Gaines back into the Stryper fold, setting up the first Stryper release in years to feature the definitive line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass) and Robert Sweet (drums).

According to Michael Sweet, the impetus for putting out a mostly covers set was a simple one. “Every Stryper album is pretty serious and pretty bold in the lyrical faith sense of the word. We just wanted to roll our sleeves up, cut loose and have some fun.” And when it came time to pick out a listing of tunes to cover, all the band had to do was look back upon their club days. “Growing up, before Stryper was even Stryper, we were a cover band. We played Gazzarri’s on the [Hollywood] Strip for years – we would do originals but also do covers, as well. We always did [Judas] Priest covers and [Iron] Maiden covers, all those bands we grew up on and who influenced us.”

What fans get is a CD that runs the gamut from 1970’s era classic rock (Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” Kiss’ “Shout It Out Loud,” etc.) to 1980’s era heavy metal (Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell,” the Scorpions’ “Blackout,” “Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper,” etc.). “A few things we set out to do on this album was to stay true to the original – we didn’t want to disrespect the original versions,” explains Michael. “I’m never going to sound like Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio, nor would I ever try to. And having me sing the song puts our own spin on it. We just all did our own thing and with our own touches and feel – Robert, Tim, Oz and myself – it has that Stryper feel to it as well.”

The album also includes an all-new Stryper tune, “God.” “Something that I was concerned about doing a covers album was the backlash,” says Michael. “Being a Christian band, I was afraid we would get beat up pretty good. And sure enough, people in the press were saying early on, ‘What are they doing? Are they Christian still?’ All this nonsense. I just felt like, ‘We really should put a song on there that solidifies our faith.’ And that tells everyone questioning our faith, ‘No, we haven’t turned our back on God, we’re still serious about it.’”

Big3 Records Chairman Bill Edwards adds, “We are excited to be releasing yet another record from one of rock music’s legendary acts. Stryper continues to build a new generation of fans while consistently delivering for those worldwide that have followed them from the beginning. We are looking forward to making The Covering their most successful release to date.”

Stryper will be supporting their latest release with a world tour, which will see the quartet dust off a handful of originals they have not performed in ages, as well as selections from The Covering, and all the expected hits. Beyond that, Michael has high hopes for what lays in store for Stryper. “We’re really excited about the future. We feel like the band is in the best spirits and the best place musically, spiritually, and physically speaking than we’ve ever been. We feel really good. We’re all pushing 50, but man, I feel like there’s so much more life for this band, and some incredible things in store for the group. We’re hooked up with some great people – we’ve got new management, a great album, a great label. We just feel like everything is coming together, and hopefully some big things are to follow.”

ABOUT STRYPER:
In 1984, Stryper broke onto the scene with their debut EP The Yellow and Black Attack, and have since gone on to sell over 8 million albums and tour the world spreading an inspirational message through their branded sound of rock songs, heavy guitars and pristine harmony vocals. The group’s unprecedented 1986 album To Hell with the Devilwas the first Christian album to go platinum and was named one of the “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music” by CCM Magazine. Stryper was also the first Christian band to get airplay on MTV, where they had several hit videos, including the #1 “Most Requested” videos “Free” and “Honestly.” The band supported their 2009 release Murder by Pridewith a year-long 25th Anniversary World Tour which took them throughout North America, South America, Europe and Australia.

MyChildren MyBride Release New Video
MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE also release ‘King Of The Hopeless’ on their social networks. Fans can view the video on the band’s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/mcmbband"target="blank">YouTube. ‘King Of The Hopeless’ is the third video from their sophomore album ‘Lost Boy’. ‘Lost Boy’ released in June of 2010 and has sold close to 14,000 units to date. The music video was shot in Los Angeles, California during the summer of 2010. Directed by Daniel Chesnut, the band is no stranger to Chesnut having worked with him on the video ‘Crimson Grim.’ “It was a wonderful experience being about to work with Daniel Chesnut who is a great artist with a clear vision,” states MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE’s Matthew Hasting. “It was very refreshing.” ‘King Of The Hopeless,’ is about how when we think our path is chosen and clear, that it’s not. Even when we feel hopeless and lost, there is always another way. Don’t forget to catch MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE while on the road with HASTE THE DAY in their farewell tour across the US and Canada. Detroit technical death metal group, As They Sleep, has launched its debut music video from the recently released full-length, Dynasty, for the track, “Oracle of the Dead”. The bone crunching video is currently streaming exclusively on <a href="http://www.noisecreep.com/2011/02/11/as-they-sleep-oracle-of-the-dead-video-premiere"target="blank">Noisecreep.com. The “Oracle of the Dead” music video was filmed at Northend Studios in Detroit with director, Drew Russ (A Day To Remember, Impending Doom, War of Ages). The ringside concept for the video was a collaborative effort between the band and director, though As They Sleep vocalist, Aaron Bridgewater, admits that the video was more about having fun, rather than exploring the complex concept behind Dynasty’s focus on the rise and fall of empires throughout history. “It in no way, shape, or form has anything to do with the song itself or the record. It’s just all of us being idiots, really.”
However, it is difficult to deny that the hard-hitting tone set by the wrestling concept does in fact exemplify the pummeling track that is, “Oracle of the Dead”. “’Oracle of the Dead’ is just stupidly unrelenting, and we figured why not come out swinging?” Dynasty, As They Sleep’s Solid State Records debut, hit stores in November. A behind-the-scenes video blog from the “Oracle of the Dead” video shoot can be seen <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWhJqkZ6lAA"target="blank">here.

CY Preps To Launch Fourth Album
Christian rapper CY is preparing to launch his fourth album, High Wire Act, with <a href="http://www.dasouth.com/complex"target="blank">a fresh website, new distribution deal, nationwide tours, and <a href="http://www.sendspace.com/file/g53dx2"target="blank">a free compilation download. High Wire Act is set to drop locally on March 10, 2011 with a combination birthday/release party. But before then, CY is whetting appetites with a free, 31 track greatest hits-style compilation titled As the World Turns: The Best of CY. This collection encompasses tracks from all of CY’s previous releases, various other projects, and even a few sneak previews of the upcoming High Wire Act album. As the World Turns is being offered as a free, digital release in partnership with 3HP Records. The compilation was downloaded over 2,100 times on the first day it was posted and is rapidly approaching the 10,000 downloads mark (all within the first five days.) “I thought the compilation was a good way to give back to my fans to let them hear some of their favorite CY songs, catch up on some they might have missed, and to let them sample a few tracks from the new album,” CY said. “I’m excited that so many people have grabbed it and pray that momentum continues once High Wire Act drops.”
After launching the Circus World Event…The Ringleader album at the 2007 Texas Holy Hip Hop Achievement Awards (where MTV personality Sway was a presenter) to critical acclaim, CY began to pray about the direction of its much anticipated follow-up. Whereas The Ringleader’s concept envisioned our world as a circus with one true ringleader (God) and an imposter (Satan) who plots and schemes for the same position, High Wire Act plays off a tight rope metaphor that represents the narrow road believers in Christ must walk in order to receive eternal life. The project also carries other messages about the humility that must be maintained by those placed in lofty positions. CY’s High Wire Act employs a gloomier carnival sound, picture-painting lyrics, and explosive energy. It’s versatile and accessible to all listeners with tracks produced by himself, Phillip Moore, Tony Stone, Vohn Beats/Symbolyc One, Jimmy Natural and others. Guest artists include Young Joshua, Tony Stone, One Dose, Von Won, FireJaws, Gina V, Tannie, Gifted, Kent & Shellee Coley, MiKalibur, Titus, D.Steele, and more. High Wire Act will be available nationally through brick-and-mortar and digital channels thanks to CY’s new partnership with CLG Distribution. Fans may also pre-order the release through the artist’s recently revamped website. Finally, you can catch CY’s eye-popping stage presentation in support of High Wire Act at either South Carolina’s M.O.S.T. Tour or as part of this summer’s 7 Chosen Tour in nine different states throughout United States and Canada.

Glenn Hughes & Doug Pinnick Sing On Sinatra Tribute
What would timeless songs like “New York, New York,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” sound like cranked out of Marshall stacks, crooned by members of Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Anthrax, Mr. Big, or Queensrÿche? This can now be experienced on SIN-Atra, a brand new album to be released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on March 29, 2011. This all-star project, created from the team that brought you the merry, molten melodies of We Wish You A Metal Xmas, reinvents the classic songs that the great Frank Sinatra performed and, in turn, made famous. These twelve cherished tunes, written by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, are given a radical hard rock/heavy metal treatment, resulting in electrically charged versions of the classics. Some of the most potent and recognizable voices of rock rework such legendary gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Strangers In The Night,” and “That’s Life,” including Dee Snider, Robin Zander, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, Geoff Tate, , Tim “Ripper” Owens, Eric Martin, and dUg Pinnick. Producers Bob Kulick, of KISS and Meat Loaf fame, and Brett Chassen, recreated these songs on guitar and drums, respectively, rounded out by Billy Sheehan (bass) and Doug Katsaros (keyboards, orchestration). Also making an appearance as lead guitarist on “That’s Life” is renowned rock guitarist Richie Kotzen. These familiar favorites are beloved the world over, but they’ve never been heard like this before! “A fantastic CD,” says executive producer Wendy Dio, “keeping the era alive with today’s musicians.” Eagle Rock Entertainment is an international media production and distribution company operating across audiovisual entertainment programming. Eagle Rock Entertainment works directly alongside talent to produce the highest quality programming output covering film, general entertainment and musical performance.
