Since October Release Single
After scoring their first ever hit on the Active Rock charts last year with “Guilty,” Since October have returned with a brand new album and lead single which picks up where they left off. The band’s sophomore release Life, Scars, Apologies will be released on Tooth & Nail/EMI Records on 6/8th. The first single “The Way You Move” has already reignited the band’s fan base by becoming the #1 most added track at Active Rock radio this week. The foursome made up of Ben Graham (Lead Vocals), Luke Graham (Guitar / Backing Vocals), Josh Johnson (Bass) and Audie Grantham (Drums) are excited to get their latest single on the air. “This is a song about a relationship gone right, and my wife of 8 years is the inspiration,” commented Ben. “It seems like most ‘relationship songs’ are about what went wrong. Since a ‘happy marriage’ is rare these days I figured I should take advantage of my situation. Before we met, I was at a time in my life where I had decided to be ’single for awhile’, you know, focus on my life, my job, my faith, my whatever. However, let’s just say after I caught a glimpse of her, that philosophy went flying out the window! There was something about her that restored in me the idea of ‘true love’. We both took a chance and after 8 years I still enjoy watching her walk through a room!” Through driving rhythms, memorable choruses, moving melodies and rock solid bottom end, the Floridian bred band have connected with listeners in clubs across America, on the radio, and via the Internet. The band’s authentic, pure voice delivered a significant following through the release of their debut album This Is My Heart in 2008, which has built steadily in to imminent street date of Life, Scars, Apologies. Graham shares, “Anything in our lyrics is usually something I’ve dealt with or maybe someone in the band is dealing with. People are attracted to that level of honesty, especially in the clubs. When people see us on stage, they might assume that we’ve got everything together and our lives are perfect. We like to say, ‘You know, we might be on stage but we’re not any higher than you guys are and we’re struggling through this just as much as you guys are.’ We’re just trying to tell our stories.” Life, Scars, Apologies — the band’s upcoming album — will undoubtedly kick down even more doors for Since October, spreading their huge riffs and big harmonies further across the globe. The band is poised to do great things, but by no means have they forgotten how and why they started. “Our faith is a huge part of our lives — what we do, how we live,” explains lead vocalist Ben Graham. Since October was built from the ground up, kicking and clawing in the hardscrabble Southern club circuit as a self-made rock n’ roll band and selling 5,000 copies of their self-financed CD through word of mouth. They’ve toured with bands like Trapt, 10 Years, Saving Abel and Saliva and shared stages with Shinedown, Flyleaf, Papa Roach, Chevelle and Judas Priest, to name a few. Most importantly for the group they’ve been able to connect to a wider audience with their music and messages. “A lot of the songs are really upbeat and fast tempo on the first album compared to this new one,” Ben points out. “We really drop the tempo down and just chug a little bit on this album.” The band will head to Nashville to shoot a video for “The Way You Move” this month. After that, they expect to do what they do best – hit the road and tour. More details to be announced shortly.

New Album From In The Midst Of Lions
Facedown Records’ In the Midst of Lions are in the recording studio with Jamie King working on their Facedown debut, The Heart of Man. The band is excited to debut some of the new songs on this summer’s Scream the Prayer Tour. ITMOL’s vocalist Matt Janssen says the band feels blessed to be able to record with Jamie adding “He’s very knowledgeable about everything he does and incredible at it. The album is coming together well, we have already tracked drums and we’re about to start tracking guitar.” When asked about the concept behind The Heart of Man, Janssen noted that it’s a 3 part concept: “The tendency of corruption in man’s heart, the consequence of that corruption, and the transformation man must go through with God to get his heart past the corruption.” The Heart of Man makes its debut in August 2010.

Norma Jean Offer Free Download
Just a heads up that the almighty NORMA JEAN has just launched a FREE download of their new song “Leaderless and Self Enlisted” at their website. Fans need to sign up for the mailing list to get the free track. The song is from the band’s upcoming new album, Meridional, which arrives July 13th.

Haste The Day Debut New Single
Metalcore monsters HASTE THE DAY are not only announcing the track listing and artwork, but are debuting the lead single from their towering new album, Attack of the Wolf King, out 6/29 on Solid State Records. “Travesty”, one of several stand-out tracks from the band’s forthcoming album, is available to purchase today on iTunes, and can also be streamed via the band’s MySpace page. Wolf King proves to be the most dynamic, ferocious and art-minded album of the band’s career – an impressive feat for an act that is releasing its fifth full length and has compiled more than a quarter-million in album sales. Recorded in Richmond with veteran producer Andreas Magnusson (THE BLACK DHALIA MURDER, OH SLEEPER, etc), Attack Of The Wolf King is the first outing for the current incarnation of HASTE THE DAY, whose new members brought equally fresh elements to the writing process, adding new fuel to the tried-and-true metalcore machine of singer Stephen Keech and bassist Michael Murphey. While HASTE THE DAY are already among the metalcore elite, Wolf King sees the band reaching frenzied new heights for what, nine years into their career, could be their career-defining album. “I think that Attack Of The Wolf King has taken the musical elements of HASTE THE DAY – the breakdowns, the melodies, and the mood – and turned it up ten notches,” says bassist Michael Murphy. “Fans of the old HTD and the new HTD will be both be in love with this album. It has the raw aggression of Burning Bridges, the catchy choruses of When Everything Falls, the energy of Pressure The Hinges, and the mood and feeling of Dreamer. Get ready for your new favorite HASTE THE DAY album!” HASTE THE DAY have already announced a summer headlining tour in support of the album, from 6/4 to July 2, and will follow that up with a Warped Tour run from July 20 to August 15th.

Ivoryline To Release Vessels July 27th
Ivoryline will release VESSELS on July 27th in stores and online. The band’s sophomore album follows their Tooth & Nail Records debut, THERE CAME A LION (2008) which opened as one of the bestselling releases from a new artist in the label’s sixteen-year history. VESSELS was produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Anberlin, The Almost) and showcases a more mature and diverse Ivoryline than was heard on their previous record. “We just started writing,” says vocalist Jeremy Gray. “We didn’t really have a plan or agenda for the record. We just wrote what was on our hearts and hashed out the songs together. We had ample time to get the songs just the way we wanted and had a blast writing and recording the record. It really was one of the most exciting, joy-filled times of my life.” Joined by Guitarist Dusty Kittle, Bassist Robert Woodward and Drummer Wesley Hart, Gray and Ivoryline began taking the band’s sound to a new level. “With The Daylight” and “Hearts Open” harken to the heart of the band’s catchy rock core while “Search Me Out” and “Instincts” take that sentiment and forge forward to plateaus like “Made From Dust” and “You Bring Fire,” which are arguably the most ethereal and moody songs of the band’s career. “It’s been four years or so since some of the songs on THERE CAME A LION were written. Our tastes in music have changed, and we have changed as people,” explains Gray. “As a band, we listen to all different types of music from classical and movie scores to metal and hardcore. Since we do all our writing together, we influence each other all the time, and we employ each other’s strengths and different tastes in the writing process.” But the band also wanted their new music to have a renewed meaning. “During the recording process, I began praying that God would literally fill our songs, lyrics, and the album as a whole with His Spirit; that he would use us as His vessels. That was just really on my heart,” Gray says. Thus VESSELS was born. “The record is definitely more honest, revealing, and spiritual than our previous. We really want it to impact people in a deep way. Of course we want them to jam it and love the songs, but we also want people to be uplifted, loved, and maybe even challenged by some of the topics we address.”

New Album From My Epic
Dreamt Music’s My Epic have been hard at work on their sophomore album for the past few months, and we now have the latest details about the project. The band has been working with Matt Goldman (Underoath, Copeland, Anberlin, Cartel) to produce their second album, YET. Vocalist Aaron Stone had this to say about working with Matt and the outcome of their sophomore Dreamt album YET. One of the things we realized early on was that [Matt] doesn’t exaggerate. He says exactly what he means. If it’s good he says so but he never uses words like “awesome” or “amazing”. That’s a quality we have really grown to appreciate over the last few years. The other great thing about Matt is that we already trusted that he knew what he was doing. This time around we felt really confident in the songs and we just wanted someone to help us maximize who we have become. We don’t ever want to make the same record twice. Matt was great at encouraging us to let this record become what it wanted to be. YET is about the distance between that which has already been traveled, overcome, and discarded, and the journey still to come. It is about the evidence, even now, of what will be. It is about a G-d who is so brilliantly and blindingly big that our rational minds can only be left to cower at His depths. He is so magnificent that we cannot yet look Him in the eye and yet He desires to live within us. It is about the hope that arises when one truly realizes that we will be completely undone when we stand before Him and yet He loves us still and makes us what we could never be on our own. My Epic will be touring in support of YET starting on 6/5th and ending at Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, IL. They along with So Long Forgotten (Come & Live) and label mates A Hope For Home are teaming up with 30 Hour Famine and World Vision for a tour that will hit the midwest, east and south. Dates will be announced soon. YET will be released on July 6th.

The Gun Show: Christian metallers The Gun Show, both technically proficient and brutally heavy, are a touring workhorse. Indie Vision Music said “they [The Gun Show] open up on you with guns a blazing.” Playing energetic and fun songs, packed with breakdowns, sing alongs, bang your head riffs, and melodies, this Ohio outfit seems to know what people want to hear. They will be working on an upcoming release in the next few months and will be playing Cornerstone 2010. You can hear material from the band on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/xthegunshowx

...The Violet Burning have never sounded more aggressive – especially during “Do You Love Me?” – and this new concert collection finds the band at their absolute best...

Living Sacrifice
The Infinite Order
I suppose you expect a lot from storied veterans Living Sacrifice. You have to. When Brett Favre shows up to play, as a veteran, you expect him to either a) do it and do it well; or b) hang up the shoulder pads. It’s in mediocrity where veteran players die. Likewise, you expect Living Sacrifice to come strong, avoid mediocrity and deliver. Otherwise, the album gets swept under the rug, finds a small niche of fans (“Their new stuff really DOES rock!”), but basically dies to their general fan base.

That being said, as Living Sacrifice has gotten older as a band, their music has naturally matured; they’ve had their thrash metal, metalcore, even Soulfly-inspired days. And though Living Sacrifice has had its share of ups, The Infinite Order doesn’t overwhelmingly impress – and may be scarily hanging on in the purgatory state of mediocrity. Although I’m digging the metal roots the album is set in, The Infinite Order feels like it’s caught in an in-between state. I want something faster, even though the record is still pretty fast. I want something more dynamic, even though it has its mood swings. Songs like “Organized Lie” get it. It’s got the metal tempo, the breakdowns, the chants – it’s a well-written song that delivers what I’d expect from most tracks on a Living Sacrifice full-length record. Unfortunately, with songs like “The Training,” a dated, turn-of-the-century vibe hits and turns the record rapidly South. The record kicks off with a stellar “Overkill Exposure,” but begins losing steam, track-by-track, only arbitrarily getting hit with a defibrillator in places to shock it back to life. Portions of “Nietche’s Madmen” show the band’s creativity in songwriting and technical skill – and I want more of it. The blessing and the curse (that bands like Living Sacrifice and ZAO deal with) is the expectation that with age comes quality. And what may be truest of all is that that’s not true at all: Veterans can still write a record, but with that title, it may be harder than ever to write an incredible one. [Solid State] David Stagg

Gwen Stacy
A Dialogue
I wasn’t overly excited to listen to A Dialogue after the first riff sounded like I was about to roam down an Underoath record. But as the first track (and progressively, the album) went on, I was more and more intrigued; the tracks kept giving me a reason to listen. The Indiana-bred quartet wasn’t writing cookie-cutter songs or riffs; I had to work to keep up with parts of A Dialogue. The dynamics of their sophomore release make the plot interesting, pulling the listener in, rather than re-hashing the same old formula. For example, instead of go to the breakdown as a core song element (the easy way out), the first real breakdown doesn’t come until the very end of the second track, “Profit Motive.” For inhabiting a tired genre (“screamo” or whatever you want to call it), Gwen Stacy has composed a record worth checking out. [Solid State] David Stagg

Before There Was Rosalyn
The Fuhrer: An Allegory of a history of deception
Creating a concept album about ruthless tyrannical governments must come from a band with boldness, dedication and heart for a devoted message. Houston’s Before There Was Rosalyn proves to be just that band by releasing their sophomore album titled The Fuhrer: An Allegory Of A History Of Deception. “Fuhrer” is the German word for “leader” and was the infamous title Adolf Hitler bestowed upon himself. Using this term as an album title yields ambiguous interpretation, but perhaps this was the exact shock reaction the band was seeking. And with each of the 11 songs named after a particular type of leader such as “The Deceiver” or “The Revealer,” the band proves to make a statement for the listener to decipher. Ultimately, this message just might be too intricate and should be lost in the cracks on most ears, so it’s fortunate that music suffices. With a heavy emphasis on grudge riffs and melodic choruses, the quintet pumps out a thick brew of toughcore heavy enough for stout bikers, yet evoking enough for singing-along swooners. The band seals their mark as an artistically evolving band with the last track, “The Deliverer,” which morphs into a climatic soar repeating: “How great is our God?” – a chorus so beautifully delivered you’ll wish it never ends. [victory] Dan Frazier

Deas Vail
Birds and Cages
Those of us that have seen Deas Vail live know what they are capable of and with the release of Birds and Cages they take another step towards defining their sound in the studio. This band has always continued to move forward and this release is their best yet. Fans of Mae and beautifully done alternative pop will love the melodies and arrangements of lush orchestration, cool guitars and ethereal vocals. “Birds” and “Dance in Perfect Time” are two of the stand-out tracks blending the piano, guitar and swirling vocals over memorable hooks and enough artistic creativity to keep the indie-alternative crowd happy. Lyrically they’re miles ahead of their competition with intelligence and artist originality. This may be pop, but it is not pop psychology. It’s moving, emotional and it makes you think. [Gotee] Dr. Tony Shore

Seabird
Rocks Into Rivers
Your reaction to Seabird’s Rocks Into Rivers will likely hinge upon how you feel about the Coldplay-ization of popular music. Coldplay deserves a lot of credit for letting Brian Eno produce them; his credentials are unquestionable. But Coldplay – even with that added Eno coolness factor – is still wimpy. Chris Martin, with all his piano plunking and overly sincere singing, too often comes off like a soft handshake. 11 songs into this 12-track release, electric guitars introduce the aptly titled “Finally Done Right.” And while keyboards and sweet vocals also find their place, it’s just so darn good to hear something at least a little gutsy. Yet there just aren’t nearly enough jubilant moments. This disc’s title track sounds like Leeland-meets-Chris Tomlin at a Hillsong concert. But even so, Hillsong would have even rocked harder than this – and Seabird is the one on the alternative rock label! Coldplay turns alternative rock into an oxymoron because that band is neither of those things. Similarly, it’s hard to tell the difference between Seabird and adult contemporary music – and that’s just plain wrong. It’s a shame because songs like “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” could have been great. Had someone like Switchfoot taken it on, for example, with an added power guitar riff, it would have carried the emotional punch it so severely lacks. Not all is hopeless, however. Seabird has far more lyrical depth than Coldplay, and has a lot of overall potential. If there’s the equivalent to assertiveness training in rock & roll, would somebody please sign up Seabird? [credential] Dan MacIntosh

The Fold
Dear Future, Come Get Me
After a couple albums and one EP on Tooth & Nail, the Chicago-based The Fold decided to go their own way (or perhaps it was vice-versa) to craft their latest disc, Dear Future, Come Get Me. And it’s easy to find the emotions involved in such changes as Dan Castady lets the listener in on the process on tracks like “Neverender,” “Head Held High” and “Hold On.” Sonically, the band took cues from recent Relient K offerings with its pop-punk leanings that expand to impressive fringes. “Head Held High” stuns with a softer synth delivery and a sweet electronic backdrop on “Dear Future.” As the band takes their sound into their own hands, their sensibilities have only gotten stronger. And in the end, the lyrical and musical punch is much stronger this time around. [Truck Treatment] Matt Conner

Take It Back!
Atrocities
10 songs. 26 minutes. You already know what you’re getting before ever listening to Take It Back!’s latest, Atrocities. The Facedown band delivers fast and loud on this sophomore outing and the only real atrocity is that it’s not enough. Powerful anthems like “New Empire” only leave you wanting more. The guitar work on Atrocities is unflinching one minute, supportive the next – playing the hero (the guitar, get it?) on the 10 songs present here. Combined with Nick Thomas’ tenor cries, it’s an intelligent assault on our broken world and hard rock fans alike. [Facedown] Matt Conner

Alesana
The Emptiness
Alesana continues their penchant for dark, mysterious themes with the telling of the shadowy murder of Annabel on The Emptiness. Creepy male and female voices weave the narrative, while each song flows into the next, enticing the listener to get lost in the story. Vocals drive the tracks – a surprising fact considering this is a six-piece. The songs remain accessibly structured, even more than on Where Myth Fades to Legend, with enough time changes to avoid redundancy. Early cuts like “The Lunatic’s Lament” suffer a bit from too many repetitions, though by the middle of the album the tension of the unwinding story is enough to keep you invested. The band effectively avoids the tendency to throw in breakdowns haphazardly, instead peppering screams throughout to keep the songs constantly moving forward. “The Murderer” highlights the band’s songwriting with varying tempos culminating in a climactic breakdown that fits well. The album builds to a chilling confrontation on “To Be Scared by an Owl” and, by the end of the final track, you’ll feel like you’re leaving a movie theater after seeing a gripping thriller. To get the full effect, listen to it in order. [Fearless] Corey Erb

Starflyer 59
Ghosts Of The Past
Starflyer 59 has been at it a long time now, since the early ‘90s, so it’s not surprising the band has two CDs’ worth of b-sides and obscurities. It’s especially fun to hear band leader Jason Martin taking on cover songs for a few of his primary musical influences. He plays the role of down-in-the-dumps Morrissey on The Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” and he also slows down and quiets The Church’s “Under the Milky Way.” Best of all, however, is how he re-imagines Bread’s “Guitar Man” as a shoegazer anthem. And while there are no Starflyer 59 songs on Guitar Hero (yet), make no mistake about it, Martin is a guitar man. So whether he’s taking the acoustic approach, as with “I Love You like the Little Bird,” or amp-ing it up during “Minor Keys,” Martin and Starflyer 59 consistently create heroic guitar music. [Tooth & Nail] dan MacIntosh

Saving Grace
Unbreakable
Saving Grace finally might justifiably be known as more than just “that really hard band from New Zealand” with their second album Unbreakable. Having already established their presence with an EP, split and debut album, the Kiwi quartet returns with another lethal dose of brutallic: harsh guitar chugs, beat-down drums and grumbled vocals all sparsely slathered together. While it might lack any hope of dynamics, Unbreakable delivers a satisfying quench for authentic heavy metal fans – especially those who miss twirling their long black hair. [Strike First] Dan Frazier

Half-handed cloud
Cut Me Down & Count My Rings
ADD sufferer? Intrepid miniaturist? Either way, John “Half-Handed Cloud” Ringhofer is one prolific sancti-indie art-pop cat. As a fruitful branch of the tree planted by Danielson Famile and Sufjan Stevens, H-HC specializes in lo-fi pop snapshots packed with scriptural metaphor and an innocently shambolic, kitchen-sink production aesthetic. Cut Me Down & Count My Rings collects 46 such nuggets – in 78 minutes – recorded before and between bigger projects. If the effect is one of a mostly jovial, elongated medley, it’s also a nutritious rush of deliberately, delightfully unrefined sugar. [Asthmatic Kitty] Jamie Lee Rake

Shapes Stars Make
These Mountains Are Safe
Vocal-less rock is a challenge, but like Mogwai before them, Shapes Stars Make superbly layers shoegazing dynamics ripe with contrast and emotion while only using vocals (just like crystal and china) on special occasions. The songs on their debut, These Mountains Are Safe, often start off as a flicker to light the flame, but the crescendo builds and gradually ignites into a bonfire. And as the music carries your thoughts, the lyrics are untraditionally absent, which gives the freedom to interpret the music’s message with your own free will. [Dreamt] Dan Frazier

Abandon Kansas
We’re All Going Somewhere
Solomon was, of course, right in saying that there’s nothing new under the sun. But sometimes a band combines familiar elements in such a way as to bring something original out of the familiar. So it is with the major label CD EP debut by Abandon Kansas. Though it sounds like these four fellows may have taken in copious amounts of Switchfoot’s sunkissed anthemics, Franz Ferdinand’s disco-punk and an array of proggy/poppy recombinants from The Fixx to MuteMath, with some pop-punk thrown in for good measure, the results bristle with freshness. Their lyrical diversity should put them in good stead with both church youth group kids and commercial alt-rock radio’s prime demographic alike. Instrumental interplay is fluidly tight, and Jeremy Spring’s clarion baritone already sounds classic. Don’t let me down, guys; your six songs here have primed me for more goodness to come. [Gotee] Jamie Lee Rake

Joy Electric
Favorites At Play
Thank Joy Electric’s Ronnie Martin for re-igniting the debate over what constitutes “Christian” music. The electro-pop mainstay who once recorded an album called Christiansongs now tackles nine faves from general market alt rock, hip soundtracks and – why not? – Nelly Furtado. The JE spin on the latter’s “Say It Right” starkly accentuates the La Nelly’s latent melancholy. Elsewhere, Martin undertakes exercises in extensive renovation (All American Rejects) and giving synthy mirror images of songs’ feelings with which he seems already sympatico (Fiest, Blink 182, The Killers). But Martin’s take on Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” pales next to the live re-contextualization of the Chris Martin gem I heard from The Pet Shop Boys in concert. If his Ronald Of Orange side project and this possible tribute to his iPod energizes him for another original Joyous stunner, he could spend his time and fans’ good will in far worse ways. [Tooth & Nail] Jamie Lee Rake

Nephesh
Inter Armas Silent Leges
Nephesh nearly define multiculturalism unto themselves. The Columbian band with a Hebrew name (“being alive” or “life breath”) and Latin album title imbue Scandinavian black metal with the bluster of Germanic romanticism. And lyrics come in Spanish and English apart from the aforementioned dead Italian tongue. Orchestral keyboards and touches of sternly swelling choral vocals bring to mind Richard Wagner as much as the metrically shifting blast beats and ornate guitar recall Dimmu Borgir. But their dual vocals – a regurgitory gonad pinch in a higher register and the lower handled in a manner akin to Cookie Monster (sorry about the cliche) after a couple of diction lessons – keep Neph’ from the confines of the grand concert hall, though handily leading the mosh pit of their choice. Instrumental prologue and epilogue bracket what may be a concept album or more individuated onslaughts of aural darkness proclaiming the Light. Either way, Inter Armas Silent Leges stands as rather undeniable first salvo from an act with an already mature aesthetic. [Nockternal Hemizphear] Jamie Lee Rake

The Blind Boys of Alabama
Duets
The Blind Boys of Alabama sure choose some odd duet partners! And while Lou Reed is no vocal match for these gospel greats, his “Jesus” is still one of the best unlikely hymns in rock history. Whether it’s country (Randy Travis), reggae (Toots Hibbert), or blues (John Hammond) almost every gospel-(fill in the blank) combination is represented. Their friends are great, but these gospel powerhouses don’t really need any star power; yet it’s still fun to musically mix and match. [Saguaro Road] Dan MacIntosh

Number One Gun
To the Secrets And Knowledge
Despite losing its entire original roster, primary member Jeff Schneeweis continued the Number One Gun moniker with 2008’s The North Pole Project and now is back again with a fourth release titled To The Secrets And Knowledge. While utilizing the same elements as labelmates Anberlin (melodic soars accented by edge, but without the ‘80s nostalgia) and Mae (evocative lifts marinated in emotion, but without the electronic glitches), this album has hopes to finally carry the act into mainstream success. And the cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” surprisingly feels very appropriate. [Tooth & Nail] Dan Frazier

Family Force 5
Christmas Pageant
These guys freaked me out with this album. I figured it wouldn’t be a typical Christmas album, but I was expecting FF5 to stay stuck in their crunk ways. Not so. It’s all still crazy, but it sounds like they leaped with both feet in the direction of The Lonely Island or 3OH!3. Yeah, it’s kind of bouncing with smooth hip-hop… After the shock wears off, it’s mostly lots of fun. The boy band vibe they take in “Angels We Have Heard On High” is not so fun, but a minor road bump in a pleasant trip. [TMG] Doug Van Pelt

Pacifico
Thin Skin and an Open Heart
Variety is not just the spice of life; it’s also an element that helps keep CD reviewers from taking their own lives. And the variety expressed throughout Pacifico’s Thin Skin And An Open Heart is a true lifesaver. “Friends & Lovers” begins with a country lilt, before wonderfully harmonized vocals kick in. This one is followed by “Stop!,” which is driven by an irresistible power-pop electric guitar riff. It’s hard to find a lot that is overtly spiritual on this offering, lyrically speaking, although “Salvation Army” hints at Christianity’s role in a person’s life. But then again, it could just be about hitting rock bottom and shopping at thrift stores. Yet it is primarily the sounds, and not the messages, that make this such a fine effort. One song is titled “We Are The Easily Forgotten,” but nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to the band Pacifico. [Allalom] dan macintosh

Divide the Sea
Man
If Maylene and the Sons of Disaster had a baby, and old-Norma-Jean/Luti-Kriss had a baby, and somehow, by the grace of God, those two babies got together and … had another baby – well, by golly, Divide The Sea’s fantastically produced Man would pop out with a bloodstream carrying a worshipful flare. Although I might not give them mad props for “most original band of the century.” By combining great musicianship with a powerful frontman, you’ve got a solid signing here. What kind of musical classification does a band like this put on their MySpace? “Heavy-as-an-elephant-meets-southern-metal-meets-chaotic-turned-melodic-turned-back-into-hardcore-meets-slow-jam-meets-guitar-solos-meets-slug-chunky-breakdown-chant-praise-madness?” As “Saved Alone” rejoices, “It is well with my soul…“ (Give it a listen, you’ll understand). [Blood & Ink] Levi Macallister

Fireflight
For Those Who Wait
The already convinced should be thrilled with the forthcoming For Those Who Wait, yet another compendium of female-fronted rock (or is that rawk) songs intended for action movies and sports arenas alike. If anything, this latest is merely a continuation of Unbreakable, the band’s breakout sophomore album that earned nods from Billboard and high-profile placements all over television. The title track pulls a slow burn before rising to its final crescendo as Dawn Richardson gives those barely holding on an anthem to cling to. “Desperate” and “Core of My Addiction” tread predictable ground both lyrically and musically, speaking to familiar themes in the genre, and the guitar work from Justin Cox and Glenn Drennen remains strong on both. Ultimately for those who waited on this disc, you’ll find more of what you loved on the last. [Flicker] matt Conner

Transatlantic
The Whirlwind
After Neal Morse’s conversion to Christianity, he told me there wouldn’t be another Transatlantic project. Thank God he was wrong. I have been yearning for some classic prog rock and The Whirlwind does not disappoint. Transatlantic is somewhat of a progressive art-rock super group featuring members of Dream Theater, Marillion, The Flower Kings and Spock’s Beard. This is their third album and it holds up well with the first two. It is easy to discern that this band is largely driven by Neal Morse (Spock’s Beard) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) because it sounds a lot like Neal’s last few solo projects that they both play on. However, the addition of Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion) does make a difference that brings this up a notch. In epic classic prog fashion The Whirlwind is a single piece of music that is almost 78 minutes long. Not to fear though, it’s broken up into 12 separate tracks. Prog fans really have a reason to celebrate this one because musically it is even better than you would expect and lyrically Neal is at his best. You have to get the limited edition version, though, because it comes with a bonus disc that has 4 more new studio tracks and 4 cover songs. [Radiant/Metal Blade] Dr. Tony Shore

Frank Schweikhardt
Life But No More
Sounding like what comedian Steven Wright might were he to sing, Frank Schweikhardt reveals a weary soul all too aware of his sinful shortcomings on his latest longplayer. Those who enjoy the lightness of Denison Witmer and the dramatic weariness of Bon Iver could find favor in Schweikhardt’s personal observations and personalization of certain Christian doctrines in his minimalist folk-pop. However, accompanying himself in at least a slightly less samey manner than he does throughout most of this, Schweikhardt might raise himself a notch or more among folkies appealing to alt rockers. [Crossroads of america] Jamie Lee Rake

Kutless
It Is Well
This Kutless worship album opens with the hymn “It Is Well,” introduced by a scratchy recorded version of the song, before going into full-on rock & roll. And this release follows with that general pattern – part worship hymn, part rock & roll – the rest of the way. Of the 12 tracks, the band had a part in writing half of them, which gives the CD a good new/old balance. And while the music doesn’t rock as hard as typical Kutless work, it is nevertheless still tough. Best of all, there aren’t too many overly familiar praise songs. Only about three, “Hungry,” “Redeemer” (a medley of “Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful” and “There Is A Redeemer”), and “God of Wonders,” have been recorded multiple times. It’s also a treat to hear a guitar band, such as Kutless, on a piano-backed song like “What Faith Can Do.” Yes, all is well with Kutless’ worship. [BEC] Dan MacIntosh

Stria
Chimera
If you thought that the chin dipping, word rapping, gut singing hybrid chug rock was dead, Stria is here to prove you wrong. Like Linkin Park’s little step-brother that was rejected by Wind-Up Records, Stria delivers on their debut album Chimera a strong nostalgia for the late ‘90s hard rock that rivaled bubblegum pop on the airwaves and filled arenas with a baggy jean and black t-shirt clad audience. But after hearing Stria’s multiple tracks consecutively filled with the same clichéd formula, you’ll quickly remember why you grew to hate this music the first time around: because everyone discovered something better. [Raging Storm] Dan Frazier

The Violet Burning
Sting Like Bees and Sing
The Cure-y electric guitar work on “More,” which was recorded live along with nine others at Cornerstone Festival in July of 2007, may fool you into thinking your dream of finding the Robert Smith of Christian music has come true. (But fans of Mike Pritzl have always known this). The Violet Burning have never sounded more aggressive – especially during “Do You Love Me?” – and this new concert collection finds the band at their absolute best. [thevioletburning] Dan MacIntosh

Hearts Of Saints
S/T
If the name Special D rings a bell, then you’re slightly ahead of the learning curve regarding new modern rock act Hearts of Saints. After signing to Grits’ new record label, Revolution Art, the Kentucky quartet ventured toward a more dance rock oriented sound and changed their name in the process. And now, the band’s self-titled becomes the label’s attempt to branch into the rock and roll market. Hearts of Saints is largely a solid entry to begin with. The band’s clearly at home in familiar radio rock territory and they execute their craft quite well. Accessible riffs match equally accessible melodies for a pleasant rock sound buoyed by harmonies and the occasional synth work. “Breakdown” and lead track “The Secret” deliver the highlights, although there’s no real weak spot among the bunch. Nothing spectacular, but a solid debut nonetheless. [Revolution Art] Matt Conner

The Crucified
The Pillars of Humanity
You already know this is a ridiculously good, must-own album for the hard music enthusiast, because you already have it (the original release on cassette or CD, with the lame 2-dimensional artwork). What you need to know is, “Did the remix by Jason Martin and Steve Dail make a sonic difference?” You’ll be glad to know that the answer is a resounding YES! For instance, the galloping riffage in a tune like “It’s All About Fear” receive an extra spark and edge that sounds more alive (like it might come right outta the speakers and throttle you) than it does some old analog recording. It’s bright yet thick. Don’t hesitate to add it to your collection or, better yet, get the boxset. [Tooth & Nail] Doug Van Pelt

Guardian
First Watch
Overlooked in terms of the numbers they sold later after leaving the secular label for Christian music stardom, this debut album by Guardian stood above most of its peers. Yes, it’s time-stamped squarely in the ‘80s with production (handled by Stryper’s Oz Fox), guitar fills, bent notes galore and vocal histrionics galore, but it’s the real deal – not a cheap imitation. And check out how the finger-plucking intro to “One Of A Kind” pulls it into the “timeless” song mode. [Retroactive] Doug Van Pelt

W.A.S.P.
Babylon
What’s this old frontman named Blackie Lawless up to now? Can he be taken seriously? What would you say if I told ya he found a way to do his fanbase proud by sounding hungry and energetic with a lyrical theme drenched in biblical prophecy? While I was never a fan of his vocals and anthemic style, I have to say this album has caught my ear. Their cover of Deep Purple’s “Burn” is frightfully good, too. [Global Music] Doug Van Pelt

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Live
This triple-disc collection (2 DVDs & a CD) showcases BRMC in all their black & white coolness. Unlike many CD/DVD live album combinations (take HIM or Muse, for example), this one sounds better than it looks. While the live performance is shot professionally with great cameras, I find myself enjoying the energy of the tunes with my eyes closed more than locked in on what’s shown. It’s almost as if the 48-page booklet captures their aesthetic better than the high-end video cameras did. [Abstract Dragon] Doug Van Pelt

Creed
Full Circle
Scott Stapp reminds me of our quarterback in high school. His name was Dusty West and people called him “lil’ John Elway,” partly due to our mascot being the (Kern Valley) Broncos, but I bet he started the nickname himself. That’s right, he was full of himself … but he had talent. He was a hotdog water skier that ruled the nearby waters. Seemed like everything he touched went All-District. The people at Lake Isabella even tapped him for their commercial, filming him spinning in a stand-up position down their long steel slides culminating with a one-and-a-half into the water. One weekend his ego got the best of him and he called us linemen “worthless,” hinting that he didn’t need us to win. In the course of our game against the lowly Lone Pine Eagles that next Friday, he yelled at us in the huddle, muttering that stinging judgment, again. Marty, Pat, John, Steve and I all looked at each other and nodded. We then let the eager Lone Pine linemen opposite us straight through the line for an easy sack. He did his best to outrun them, but he spun right into a spearing helmet that left him bruised and bleeding. We did this for two plays in-a-row until he apologized in the huddle. “You know what, guys?” he said, flipping his mouthpiece and sending a huge wad of blood that had filled the molded cavern splattering towards the ground… We all stared at that coagulated mass of red liquid as he continued on about “deserving every lick he was getting.” We looked back at his eyes as he said, “I’m sorry. I’ve been a total (bleep) to you guys. I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t throw another block for me the rest of the season.” One of our guys stuck his paw out and settled the matter with a handshake that made its way around the huddle. Dude learned his lesson and the team re-grouped and supported him. “Humble pie tastes like (bleep),” he said after the game, and I think that Creed’s lead singer can relate. They’ve rallied together – like our Broncos did that game with 28 unanswered points – and written a solid album that makes those that can remember almost forget all about that Weathered album and all the Stapp drama that followed. There’s a lot of us-vs-them language in these songs, but nary a pitiful word in the bunch. With the experienced production touch of Howard Benson, the sounds have more youth and urgency in them than you’d expect from a bunch of old guys. Not a classic, but not bad, either. [Wind-up] The Kern County Kid

Green River Ordinance
Out Of My Hands
Few places exist more suitable than the current touring slot where Green River Ordinance resides, opening for American Idol winner David Cook. The Texas five-piece melds the best of most modern pop/rock acts around them to create a fantastic label debut, Out of My Hands, that bears no throw-away tracks front to back – a startling testament in today’s single-driven age. Third Eye Blind, Counting Crows, Our Lady Peace – every act appears in some influential form on Out of My Hands and show vocalist Josh Jenkins and company are fans, first and foremost, of a great melody. “Outside” should sweep its way to the top of the charts if given half a chance and the title track enjoys an Augustana-like structure. The same could be said of every other song, honestly. And that’s a good thing for the guys in GRO. [Virgin] Matt Conner

Sincerely Paul
Grieve
When Sincerely Paul released Grieve in 1991, the world wasn’t quite ready for such gravely honest Christian music. This double-disc reissue’s CD notes tell of an embarrassing early band church gig, and that combination (dark rock group and conventional church) was clearly not a match made in heaven. Fortified by four bonus live cuts on the set’s second disc, this new package provides your second chance to hear James Preston’s desperate, before-its-time vocals. It’s a reminder that Sincerely Paul’s record deal with Blonde Vinyl was truly its only heavenly match. [Slide Music group] Dan macintosh

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Night Castle
Reading other reviews, you get a real mix of “love it/hate it” about this release. Being TSO’s second non-holiday album, it tells a story – in 21 songs (plus 5 non-story bonus tracks), on two discs with a nice 68-page booklet. At first listen I was less than impressed, especially when compared to previous releases. Upon subsequent listens though, the songs and the story continued to grow more enjoyable. While there are a couple rockers, this release is a bit more theatrical and melodic, ending up having more “opera” than “rock” for this rock-opera release. The 21-song length can begin to feel a bit long-winded for a story that could probably have been told in one disc; but it is what it is, and if you love it, you’ll love having more, and at a good price too. If judged as a stand-alone project, it is quite enjoyable. [Atlantic] Jeff McCormack

Queens Club
Nightmarer EP
This band can’t be pigeon-holed into one of these disparate musician stereotypes: leather-jacketed hedonists straddling Harleys, chicks on one arm and Strats in the other; ultra-cool, tortured artistes irresistible to brainy, beautiful women; and nerdy misfit techno-geek-knob-twisters who have no women but really cool gear. Instead, Nightmarer rocks and bleeps with a cool amalgamation of all three, fused with quirky evocative lyrics. Queens Club, who even looks like mutant offspring of the above, bring on your full-length – I’m ready to wake up screaming again. [Tooth & Nail] Carey Womack

Templar
Dark Circus
Third release shows a now well-established darkwave band, featuring heavy guitar-driven metallic music with a dark-sounding modern rock feel. Vocal styles here differ from the almost Rob Zombie feel of their last release, in places now giving a more mainstream alternative sound, while mixing in some death growls as well as an almost punk-like barking in places. Overall, a very solid release leaping large bounds over their previous two, and should garner them even more attention. [Youngside] Jeff McCormack

Flatfoot 56 Ready To Release New Album
Hailing from one of punk rock’s most traditionally rooted cities, Chicago’s FLATFOOT 56 is the most recent addition to the Old Shoe Records family of artists. Coinciding with the band’s 10th year anniversary, Flatfoot 56 has announced that their Old Shoe Records debut Black Thorn, produced by the Street Dogs’ Johnny Rioux, will be released on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th 2010. Founder of Old Shoe Records Josh Stolo discussed the merger. “Old Shoe bands always have a great work ethic and have something more to offer. Flatfoot’s music is anthemic and really crosses all divides. These guys live on the road and own every stage they play. It’s an honor to have them join our family.” Led by spirited front man Tobin Bawinkel (Vocals/Guitar), along with brothers Justin (Drums), and Kyle (Bass), and multi-instrumentalist Eric McMahon (Bagpipes/Mandolin), FLATFOOT 56 is fueled by a sense of camaraderie that directly translates to their die-hard fans and highly energetic live shows. The forthcoming new album, Black Thorn, tightly packs the quartet’s eclectic and driving musical charge into thirteen tracks that celebrate the pride of the working class and their Chicago roots. A collection of songs that delves into weighty thematic content, Tobin explains that the cohesive theme of Black Thorn is a fundamentally universal one. “Everyone goes through hardships, but you aren’t alone. Punk rock is about community and brotherhood. This record is our contribution to that.” As cathartic as it is ambitious, Black Thorn is an emphatic assault that remains vintage Flatfoot in its effortless combination of Celtic instrumentation and street corner punk rock. Bagpipes and mandolins remain just as vital as drums and guitars in defining Flatfoot’s sound. Already building momentum for 2010, Flatfoot 56 has been confirmed for a supporting run on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour. Starting July 11th and ending August 2nd, the run will include a hometown performance in Chicago that will prove momentous for the Windy City natives. In March, the band will celebrate the release of Black Thorn with release parties in multiple US cities and will travel to Austin, Texas during SXSW to headline the Old Shoe Records showcase alongside labelmates Far From Finished. Consistent with the band’s unequivocal work ethic, loads of tour dates are currently being mapped in support of the band’s Black Thorn release. Celebrating a decade of punk rock with a purpose, Flatfoot 56 is a welcome addition to the Old Shoe Records family. Additionally, Black Thorn will be released by Stomp Records in Canada and I Hate People Records in Europe, and distributed by Big Mouth Japan in Japan.

Former Pornographer Now Uses His Internet Skills For The Gospel
Godbeat Media Group has announced the official launch of Godbeat.tv, a family-friendly environment akin to YouTube where users can upload and share videos, create profiles, share personal stories, video blogs, their band or artist footage, church and youth group clips or other home-made videos. But unlike YouTube and similar video-sharing websites, Godbeat.tv President Jeff Myers says consumers will not have to worry about content. “Every single video uploaded will be screened by a live person at the time it is uploaded,” says Myers. “We will make sure every video on Godbeat.tv is 100% safe for its viewers. Users can also flag videos they feel are inappropriate as a further level of safety.” Additionally, Godbeat.tv offers a full HD player with the fastest upload and encoding times available in the marketplace. Users can also upload and select an “as is” aspect ratio which means videos will never be altered from their original state to fit the player. Users can choose from three standard-size embed players or, with a simple code edit, can make the player any size they like, fitting it into any website, blog or social network site. Myers first launched Godbeat.com in the spring of 2008 on a personal mission of redemption. For seven years, Myers was one of the top ten producers of online pornography in the U.S., producing 2.8 million registered images and thousands of hours of adult video. Though his business brought him great wealth, it also led to his own personal self-destruction. On April 13, 2006, a tip from one of Myers’ employees led police to a raid on Myers’ home and a subsequent arrest on drug charges. During his eight-month criminal trial, Myers attended a Christian campground that he had visited in his youth and recommitted his life to God. Myers spent a year in prison and began to lay the groundwork for what would become Godbeat Media Group. “Part of my personal mission for Godbeat Media Group is that the content be something uplifting, opening people’s hearts while keeping their minds pure,” says Myers. “The internet is filled with places that pollute people’s minds and I am committed to creating websites that stand as the antithesis of those. For years, I dumped garbage into millions of homes and now I want to replace all that with the positive message of the Gospel. I am living proof that the Gospel message of love and forgiveness, regardless of a person’s past, is absolute truth.” Godbeat Media Group has experienced tremendous growth since its launch in early 2008 with its first property, Godbeat.com. Godbeat.com features exclusive artist interviews, videos, live streaming concert events, along with up-to-date Christian music industry news, artist releases, reviews and more. Godbeat.com connects fans with their favorite artists in a personal way using multiple media platforms. Godbeat Media Group also hosts “Godbeat LIVE,” an exclusive monthly concert series streamed live from various Nashville venues. “Godbeat LIVE” features performances from nationally-known artists as well as independent Christian artists and bands. Although the series is just getting started, it has already drawn as many as 14,000 viewers. Godbeat Media Group is working on a Christian Reality Show as well as a major Christian Music festival to be announced in early 2010.

Faith Factor Add New Member
FAITH FACTOR — the New Jersey-based Christian power metal band featuring ex-DEADLY BLESSING singer Ski — has announced the addition of keyboardist David Peters to the group’s ranks. he band states, “Dave just performed with us at the STRYPER 25th-anniversary concert in Allentown. Dave’s metal skills will be on a DELIVERANCE tribute CD from the Christian Metal Realm and Roxx Productions. FAITH FACTOR recently recorded the tribute song ‘Weapons Of Our Warfare’!” FAITH FACTOR released its full-length debut, “Against a Darkened Sky”, in November 2008 via Retroactive Records. The CD was mixed at Cync Studios in Deptford, New Jersey. The CD layout was designed by Christian artist Rob Rock’s (ex-IMPELLITTERI, DRIVER, JOSHUA) wife Liza with a 10-page booklet.

Roxx Productions Sign Crystavox
After 20 years of silence; one of Christian Metal’s loudest bands is back, with a great story and a line of new limited releases in collaboration with Roxx Productions. Crystavox, based out of San Diego, CA., recently met again informally to mark the 20 year anniversary of the bands first record deal (Regency 1989). Discussions progressed, causing the band to research where the original master recordings were located. Crystavox lead guitarist, Tony Lopez, located the master tapes – stored in a warehouse in Burbank, CA. The previous record label; Ocean Records, released the Archived Media back to Crystavox. “We were finally in possession of all the two-inch masters from both records but after 20 years in storage, we would have to bake the tapes in order to allow them to pass through a tape machine again,” said Lopez. “Convection baking worked and we were able to digitize the tapes in high resolution to the Pro Tools format,” Lopez concluded. Not only did the band now have control over a remix of such hit songs as “Scarifice” (#1 PRR 1990), “Home Again” (#3 CCM 1990), and “It’s All Right” (#7 PRR 1990), but also discovered a “never released” live concert and MTV style video. Bringing this dated and worn media back to life fell on the shoulders of drummer, Fred Helm, who had become a director and producer for regional and national televisions shows since his departure from Crystavox. “Finally getting to load this live show into our production studio was so much fun,” said Helm. “The only copy we had was a 20 year old VHS tape that had been played several times over the years. All the blacks were grey, the color was washed and in 1990, Widescreen TV did not exist. We have corrected the color issues and re-mastered the video in the 16:9 format. These videos; which consist of 4 live songs and 4 MTV-style video productions, will also include a recently recorded, “where are they now” segment – shot in HD, and featuring the band “self narrating” the story of Crystavox. The band took a shot at remixing the old songs to see if modern technology could add a new edge to the hit songs recorded so long ago – when MP3’s, the internet and non-linear digital recording did not even exist. “The pre mixes were good enough to import a complete Pro Tools HD system into the production studio and take a serious shot at remixing the old songs,” said Crystavox song writer and guitarist Loren Holmquist. “When I heard the pre-mixes, I was astounded as to the clarity and general lack of over-processed sounds that we had gotten used to,” said Adam Lee Kemp, lead singer for Crystavox. “The 80’s were all about excess; in vocals, layered harmonies, guitars and effects.” “Consequently, I knew that converting those previous concepts into a current format would involve a major overhaul in order to synchronize the delivery with modern music and culture.” “Ultimately, Fred was able to start-from-scratch and re-mix these New Versions using a minimal portion of subtle effects – causing the songs to appear modern, 20 years after they were recorded.” Kemp concluded. The songs have been totally redone; new guitars, drums and an over-sampling method vastly increasing the mastered volume of each song to today’s standards. The re-discovery of Crystavox in 2010 comes complete with a custom built media website featuring the bands songs and videos. The new release entitled, “The 20 Year Mix” will include a DVD and the “Best Of” songs released through Roxx Records/Roxx Productions. “I realized Crystavox might be in the position to re-release its library which, in its original versions would have done well. Realizing the songs had been remixed and there was a DVD interested Roxx,” said Bill Bafford, President of Roxx Productions. “We are very excited about this limited release and the relationship with Crystavox.” The release is set for Early Spring 2010 on Roxx Records. After the break up of Crystavox in early 1992, original members Adam Lee Kemp, Loren Holmquist, Fred Helm and Tony Lopez continued in the production and recording industries recording over 45 releases and 27 television shows.

New Kutless Album Does Well
Last week, BEC Recordings’ artist Kutless introduced “It Is Well,” the follow up to the RIAA Gold selling “Strong Tower” album, as radio listeners and media responded loudly to the album. Driven by the challenge to do something different, Kutless strived for this release to reflect the band’s heart and who God is. “We started with a goal, but, through the process, God took that goal and turned it back around to Himself,” shares the band in talking about “It Is Well.” “The quest for a special album became a unique time for us to go deeper in worship.” Resonating with fans, the project debuted at No. 42 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 3 on Billboard Top Christian Albums (in between WOW and Skillet) selling 11,385 units. This debut outsold their 2008 release “To Know That You’re Alive.” “It Is Well” also debuted on the iTunes Top Christian Albums chart at No. 1 and has remained in that position one week later. In addition, “It Is Well” peaked at No. 11 on the Overall Top Albums chart on iTunes. Radio stations and listeners are being impacted by the first single “What Faith Can Do” on all four formats (AC Monitored and Indicator, CHR, Inspo). The single was once again the No. 1 most added song at the AC Monitored format and had the highest spin increase this week landing at No. 15. At AC Indicator and Inspo, the single jumped up 4 spots to move into the Top 5 and secured a place in the Top 10 at CHR with the most spins. “Every day at KLOVE, we hear from friends who say that the right song played at the right time, and right now we are hearing that a lot about ‘What Faith Can Do’ from Kutless,” shares Scott Smith (APD/MD KLOVE). “The timeless message of hope is breathing life into our listeners!” Another radio program director, Greg Cassidy (PD/MD Joy FM St. Louis, MO), shares, “Kutless has quickly become one of our best testing bands…..they write great songs that hit our target demo where they live. ‘Faith’ is no exception….great calls and numbers! With their track record we felt good about adding it a bit early!”

Seabird News
Seabird is back with a new single entitled Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful which hit all digital outlets this past Tuesday, November 3. The track is pulled off of their sophomore album, Rocks Into Rivers, which releases on December 15. A follow up to Seabird’s 2008 critically acclaimed label debut, ‘Til We See The Shore, Rocks Into Rivers features top-notch production by Paul Moak (Mat Kearney, Sixpence None The Richer) and Matt Hales from Aqualung. The band split its time between Ocean Studios in Los Angeles and The Smoakstack in Nashville, honing what brothers Aaron and Ryan Morgan are calling their most exciting project to date. Cincinnati-based Seabird comprises brothers Aaron (vocals/keys) and Ryan (guitar) Morgan as well as Preston Lane (drums).
Sancrosanct Records Sign Bought in Blood
Sancrosanct Records is proud to present Bought in Blood. Straight out of Pittsburgh, PA this band has it all. With their own mix of hardcore and metal influences ranging from bands like Since The Flood to Dragonforce, Bought In Blood hits their fans with driving riffs, forceful lyrics, and what some fans consider “just the right amount” of punishing breakdowns. “The reason we’re so excited about this band is that it is something new to the scene.” says Sancrosanct A&R rep Niel Granning. “We just can’t seem to bring our selves to eject the CD, and I think everybody who listens to this band will find that they too, will have the same affliction.” Bought in Blood has a powerful and controversial message, warning against the use of the word “Christian” to only be used to obtain a status, record label attention, or endorsement. Bought In Blood strives to bring back what’s been forgotten by many. The five piece has been playing since 2007 and Joe, Josh, Louis and Bill are still extremely dedicated to their music. Expect new big things from this band. Check out Bought in Blood’s EP “To the Wolves”.

Peter Case Returns To Stage
Following an unexpected coronary bypass operation in January of 2009, singer-songwriter-guitarist Peter Case returns to the stage at McCabe’s Guitar Shop on December 4 to celebrate his 25th anniversary as a solo acoustic performer. Case plans to debut new songs–his first to see daylight since 2007’s Grammy nominated Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John. Case put performance on hold for most of the year while recovering from heart surgery. The opportunity to focus on other aspects of musical life found him compiling archival works by the Plimsouls, the Nerves and the Breakaways, his post-Nerves project with bandmate Paul Collins; the pair reunited this summer at McCabe’s, where Case sat in during a Collins show. Walkin’ Out on Love by the Breakaways and the vinyl only release, The Nerves at Pirate’s Cove, were just released by Alive Recordings. The Plimsouls Live at the Whisky A Go Go, 1982 is set for release early next year. Case is also preparing to enter the studio for two solo projects. The summer season saw the return of Case to the stage for a triumphant solo acoustic show at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch in rural Ohio, where he received a most warm and enthusiastic response to his first show in six months. Case follows January’s operation and July’s gig with his December return to McCabe’s, the Southland’s most legendary room for live acoustic music and a venue close to Case’s heart. In 1984, Case made the bold decision to leave what he calls “a perfectly good rock band” to go solo. “It felt like I was reinventing the wheel,” said Case of the period in which very few of his peers had taken the plunge into solo acoustic music. Today, there are more singer-songwriters than there are hats at the singer-songwriter supply shop to fit them all, but Case is among his vocation’s finest. Witness the list of talent pooled in his name for a benefit to defray the uninsured musician’s medical costs following surgery: T-Bone Burnett, Loudon Wainwright, Dave Alvin, Richard Thompson, Eric Idle, Sam Phillips, Van Dyke Parks, Syd Straw, Stan Ridgway, Joe Henry…and the list goes on. All lent a hand during a mighty three-day weekend of fundraising at McCabe’s, where Case is a part of the family. “I realize I’m very lucky to have been supported by such a generous and talented community of musicians and friends,” says Case. McCabe’s is not only Case’s hometown club; it is host to his acclaimed songwriting workshops. Case has taught songwriting to beginning and advanced songwriters from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Dublin, Ireland. This January’s sessions are a rare opportunity to pick up some songwriting secrets directly from a master, whose songs have been recorded by Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry, Todd Snider, the Goo Goo Dolls, the Go-Go’s and many, many more. “It’s great to be back,” he says.

Dreampilots News
Red Hammer Records rock band Dreampilots fly into rock radio airspace this week with their debut single “Comedown” from the album of the same name. With the music video already generating attention at top outlets like Gospel Music Channel and JCTV, the radio single debuted at #28 this week on both the Billboard Christian Rock Chart and the CRW Signature Rock Chart. Dreampilots released their North American debut album Comedown (Red Hammer Records/E1 Entertainment Distribution) in September to rave reviews, immediately landing on the iTunes “New and Noteworthy” list of current rock genre releases. The Norway-based foursome, which has drawn comparisons as diverse as U2, Switchfoot and Foo Fighters, is made up of veteran musicians with an incredible track record. Frontman and former Word Records UK artist Oddi Nessa is joined by bass player Gulleiv Wee, a founding member of the platinum selling pop band The September When, sought after keyboard player Inge Engelsvold and drummer Karl Oluf Wennerberg, who is also the current drummer for the multi-platinum group a-ha.

As I Lay Dying Wins At Hollywood Film Festival
The 13th Annual Hollywood Film Festival’s “Hollywood Awards” ceremony was on October 26th before a standing-room-only audience of over 1,100 Hollywood Film Festival attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The winners of the festival’s film competition were announced Sunday night at the “Hollywood Discovery Awards Presentation Ceremony at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood. This year’s winners are: “CROSSING” by Kim Tae-kyun — Best Feature Film; “GARBAGE DREAMS” by Mai Iskander — Best Documentary; “SCENESTERS” by Todd Berger — Best Comedy; “STORIES FROM THE PERCH” by Andrew Zimbelman — Best Animation, “LAMBS” by Stephen Huff — Best Short Subject, “AS I LAY DYING – THE SOUND OF TRUTH” by Brian Thompson — Best Music Video. AS I LAY DYING frontman Tim Lambesis commented on the win “The Sound of Truth video could not have been made without an entire team of amazing people. It was a combination of two individually complex forms of art that came together seamlessly to create one great video I’m very proud of. The basic concept is related to the music and lyrics that we wrote, but Brian Thompson and his whole crew took that beyond what we could have imagined.” Directed by Brian Thompson, who helmed their futuristic clip for “Nothing Left,” the video for “The Sound of Truth” was made at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA and is a continuation of the story the first video initiated. Like its predecessor, the story for this video was conceived by the band, fine-tuned by director Brian Thompson, and displays the irony and hypocrisy that takes place in a decaying futuristic society.
Soundmass Signs Malchus
Soundmass is pleased to announce the signing of melodic/progressive metal band Malchus. Formed in May 2004 and hailing from Przeworsk, Poland, Malchus was founded by Radoslaw Solek (Radii), who also shares vocal duties with Illluminandi. Having recorded 4 demos and played a lot of local shows over the years, the band decided it was finally time to enter the studio to record and “Didymos” is the result. It is hard to label the style of Malchus. Their music is a union of heavy guitar sounds and technical keyboard play. Their compositions are characterized by their interesting structure and form. For an idea of what to expect from Malchus, imagine melding Opeth and Dream Theater. With vocal help from Illuminandi vocalist/guitarist Jan Trebacz, be on the lookout for “Didymos” to hit around the end of the year. In the meantime, visit the Malchus MySpace and check out “All The Glory (Wszelka Chwata)” and “Resurrection”.

To Save A Life Secures Theaters
Samuel Goldwyn Films announced today that it has acquired U.S. theatrical rights to Brian Baugh’s directorial debut TO SAVE A LIFE, a New Song Pictures production. TO SAVE A LIFE is the story of an all-American teen Jake Taylor, who seemingly has it all. After a childhood friend’s death, Jake’s world turns upside down, and he is forced to make a decision that could change his life forever. TO SAVE A LIFE is about making unexpected choices and sacrifices, while having the courage and determination to persevere against all odds. “We wanted TO SAVE A LIFE to be different,” explains Baugh. “A film made with a different approach, a different production value, with a different vision. The film looks at real teen culture – as edgy and uncomfortable as it can be at times. And ultimately, the goal was to make a quality film that would be authentic – something teens would really relate to – with characters and a story that had credibility.” Goldwyn is working in association with Outreach Films and New Song Pictures to market, promote and publicize TO SAVE A LIFE and has slated a January 22, 2010 release. Goldwyn has released some of the most distinguished inspirational entertainment in recent years, including 2008’s highest grossing independent film FIREPROOF, FACING THE GIANTS and AMAZING GRACE. “We are confident that TO SAVE A LIFE will continue our proven track record of releasing faith based films” says Peter Goldwyn, Vice President of Acquisitions, “the success of which reaffirms the need for inspiring entertainment. TO SAVE A LIFE is not only deeply moving but also entirely engaging – – Brian and Jim have done a great job of really depicting the challenges that today’s youth face.” Outreach Films has already screened the film for over 10,000 teens, youth workers, parents and teachers. The overwhelming rave reviews on the strong realistic storyline, quality of the production and incredible cast raise the bar for films of this genre. TO SAVE A LIFE seeks to not only look candidly at choices teens make, but inspire them to impact their communities. TO SAVE A LIFE stars Randy Wayne (THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, FOREIGN EXCHANGE, THE LAST HURRAH, GRIZZLY PARK), Deja Kreutzberg (CSI MIAMI, LAW AND ORDER, HOPE AND FAITH), Kim Hidalgo (BALL DON’T LIE, NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE) and Sean Michael Afable (CHANNELS, AKEELAH AND THE BEE, PHIL OF FUTURE.) This is Brian Baugh’s directorial debut. He has DP’d many projects including: THE ULTIMATE GIFT, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK and THE LOST MEDALLION. The screenplay was written by Jim Britts, a graduate of BIOLA’s prestigious film school. Grammy winner Charlie Peacock is the music supervisor and Grammy, Emmy and Interactive Academy Award winning composers Christopher Lennertz and Timothy Wynn created the score. Britts states, “We hope that TO SAVE A LIFE can truly inspire a generation to help give a voice to the hurting and to make a difference in the lives of those around them. We are thrilled that Samuel Goldwyn Films shares our vision and we look forward to working together.” Meyer Gottlieb, President of Samuel Goldwyn Films negotiated the deal with Managing Producer Steve Foster of New Song Pictures.

Deas Vail Sign To Mono Vs Stereo
Deas Vail inks a deal with Mono vs Stereo, with 1 full length and 2 EP’s already under their belt the band gets set to release their sophomore full length album Birds & Cages at all digital outlets and available for purchase at all tour dates on October 27 with non-stop touring well into 2010. Currently you can find the band on the road with Mae and look for the band to kick into 2010 in high gear as they hit the road with Owl City on January 21st. The band formed a few years ago while its members were students at Arkansas Tech in the Midwestern hamlet of Russellville, AR. While at school, Blaylock began writing songs he initially envisioned as solo works but as his affinity for the indie-rock scene grew, Deas Vail was born. Mixing a unique blend of indie-rock with Wes Blaylock’s distinctive upper register range and falsetto joined by the unfailingly sharp and frenetic guitar work of Andy Moore, then add in the hauntingly melodic sounds from keyboardist Laura Blaylock and the driving and cunning rhythm section of drummer Kelsey Harelson and bassist Justin Froning you get the original sound that only Deas Vail creates. Deas Vail’s Birds & Cages is the second release from the newly revived record label, Mono vs. Stereo, a partnership between Gotee Records and Relient K. Deas Vail is: Wes Blaylock – Vocals, Keys, Laura Blaylock – Keys, Synth, Kelsey Harelson – Drums , Andy Moore – Guitar and Justin Froning – Bass.

Dreamt Music Sign Shapes Stars Make
Dreamt Music is proud to announce the signing of Dallas trio Shapes Stars Make. Shapes Stars Make is an all-embracing indie band pulling ambience, post-rock guitar hooks, and romantic vocals from a galaxy of influences; but it’s the shimmery texture of their sometimes experimental music that sets them apart. In fact, if Aurora Borealis had a soundtrack, Shapes Stars Make would be it. Songs grow and diminish as if they are alive, evoking a living breathing being made of music and light. This emotionally rich indie rock is heavy with post-rock influence and has been beautifully categorized as an ‘atypical condensation of genre techniques’ (The Neo-Surrealist Movement). Absolute Punk has referred to Shapes Stars Make as ‘airy with gentle flickers that light up small and large.’ Michael Gooden, Jon Cook, and Zach Edwards give their music room to expand and contract organically which, with the help of producer John Congleton (Appleseed Cast, Explosions In The Sky), leads to the sweeping layered melodies that define Shapes Stars Make. Shapes Stars Make will be releasing their debut full length with Dreamt Music in January 2010.

Living Sacrifice Postponed Until 2010
As previously announced, Living Sacrifice are back with their brand new album, “The Infinite Order,” their first release since reforming in 2008. The release has been moved from November 3 to January 26, 2010 on Solid State Records. This will be the band’s seventh studio album. Powerful, forthright, thrashy and skillfully executed as ever, the album serves as an unapologetic reminder as to exactly why so many of today’s heavy music leaders hold Living Sacrifice and in such high-esteem. As I Lay Dying singer Tim Lambesis sums it up best, “You can hear Living Sacrifice’s legacy in the entire generation of bands who’ve come after them. And those bands still haven’t caught up.” “The Infinite Order” was produced in Nashville, Tennessee and Little Rock, Arkansas by the band’s longtime friend Jeremiah Scott (The Showdown, Destroy Destroy Destroy). Mixing duties are once again being handled by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Machine Head, As I Lay Dying), who mixed the band’s last album, 2003’s Conceived in Fire. The band recently taped the music video for the first single “Rules of Engagement” in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for an early 2010 tour to be announced shortly. Living Sacrifice is one of the legendary Christian metal bands. Former and current members of the metal band went on to play in Evanescence, P.O.D. and Norma Jean. The forthcoming 2010 release, was produced by Jeremiah Scott (Destroy Destroy Destroy) and mixed by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Machine Head) and announces the return of Living Sacrifice with might and majesty. Living Sacrifice’s storied career stretches back to 1989. Bruce Fitzhugh (vocals / guitar) and Lance Garvin (drums) remain from the band’s earliest lineup. Rocky Gray (guitar), also known as the drummer for We Are The Fallen and the former drummer for Evanescence, and Arthur Gray (bass) joined for 2000’s The Hammering Process.

Sherwood’s New Album Out Now
Raves Pour In for Sherwood’s Qu. Album Dropped Tuesday, October 13 – Available on MySpace Music through Amazon MP3 for $2.99. For an Extremely Limited Time Only! Qu is without a question the band’s most mature album to date and the result of nearly a year of work. In July 2008 the five members of Sherwood – Mike Leibovich (keyboards), Dan Koch (guitars/vocals), Nate Henry (vocals/bass), David Provenzano (guitar/vocals) and Joe Greenetz (drums) – squirreled away in a rented apartment in Oakland, CA and dove head first into writing music. Never having this kind of freedom to write, they devoted countless hours each day to crafting song after song, a process which Leibovich says “felt like we were testing our limits and abilities.” They emerged 9 months later with 85 songs which they carefully narrowed down to 11 before heading into the studio with Wood.

New EP From The Rocket Summer
After more than two years of non-stop touring as The Rocket Summer, frontman, songwriter and multi-instrumental mastermind Bryce Avary has finally been able to put the finishing touches on his second major label album release on Island Records, OF MEN AND ANGELS, due to arrive early next year. Single “You Gotta Believe” premiered on AlternativePress.com on October 19th. In advance of the album release, a 4 song EP will be released digitally on October 27th, You Gotta Believe, produced by Bryce Avary and co-produced and engineered by CJ Eiriksson, who served as engineer on Do You Feel, the first major label album release by TRS on Island. EP will include tracks from the upcoming album and bonus song, “You Gotta Believe”, “Hills and Valleys”, “Light” and “The Fight”. Two days before the You Gotta Believe EP release, the Rocket Summer returns to the road, for a 34-city North American tour with Forever the Sickest Kids, opening October 25th in Oklahoma City, ending six weeks later in San Francisco on December 5th. OF MEN AND ANGELS and You Gotta Believe follow-up The Rocket Summer’s Island debut, Do You Feel, released July 2007. After the release of “So Much Love,” as an advance track, the album’s title tune single “Do You Feel” eventually broke through at Alternative and Modern Rock radio in the summer of 2008, while TRS headlined the sold out Alternative Press tour and graced the cover of AP’s magazine as well. TRS then headed out on a successful six-week North American tour with Phantom Planet, Secret Handshake, and the Morning Light, plus two sold out headline tours in the UK! When describing TRS, Austin City Limits states; “We’re not talking simple acoustic solo stuff here, The music Bryce makes as The Rocket Summer is lush, explosively catchy and artful power pop that hints at a new Brian Wilson or Prince in the making. Keep an eye out on this one.” The video for “Do You Feel” turned into a phenom, directed by Bryce Avary and Nate Weaver, with guest appearances by and Jeremy Davis (Paramore), Andrew McMahon (Jack’s Mannequin), Jonathan Cook (Forever The Sickest Kids), Alex Gaskarth (All Time Low), Mike Herrera (MxPx), Forrest Kline (Hellogoodbye), and Matt Theissen (Relient K). The full-length Calendar Days was recorded in 2002, and released in 2003 by The Militia Group. The grassroots following exploded as TRS toured relentlessly, climaxed by a warm reception in Japan. A second indie album, Hello, Good Friend, recorded in Brooklyn with producer Tim O’Hier, was released in 2005, as the fan base continued to grow.
