Wayne's World 1 & 2

WaynesWorld.jpg

These two movies helped define a generation a decade ago. It's a wonder it took Paramount this long to release them on DVD.

The way they set up the DVD menus and extras is excellent. It looks just like the scrolling menu on most cable television networks' schedule menu channel. If you click on the exercise schedule, you'll see some aerobics for a few minutes.

The director's commentaries are informative and funny, too. In WWI we hear Penelope Spheeris explain the "Bohemian Rhapsody" headbanging scene and how Michael Myers and Dana Carvey were like, "Do we have to do this? It hurts!" Spheeris smartly told them, "Yes. Trust me on this. It's VERY funny." Turns out, of course, that she was right about one of the most memorable scenes in the two movies.

While sophomoric in nature to be sure, there are dozens of witty lines that make re-watching a hoot. Some of the bizarre moments include: Garth drinking the jelly from a jelly donut with a straw; Garth asking Wayne if he's going to marry his love, to which Wayne replies: "Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries!" In a dream sequence Wayne is carrying Garth in his arms out of a burning building, screaming, "Why, God? Why?" [Paramount / Doug Van Pelt]
