Veggie Tales: Sumo of the Opera

This spin-off of Rocky is, of course, funny in the formulaic (and successful) way that animated series is known for – lots of adult humor that politely goes over the kiddies’ heads with pop culture anecdotes (a la Pixar and Dreamworks). The fact that they took time to weave in some good extras is a plus – a big plus. There’s an audio commentary, the obligatory behind-the-scenes and making-of featurettes, a bunch of work-in-progress glimpses, the Veggie short, “Going Up!” and then there’s the games. “Sumo Trivia” and the “Persistence Maze” nestle together with a family fun interactive game and some karaoke. Add in some silly Easter Eggs and you’ve got one fine package. Kudos to Big Idea for finally throwing their fine talents into the capabilities of the dvd format.
