Timeline

Any movie on time travel has my attention. It’s a shame when they can’t be larger than life or epic, though. Where Back to the Future lives in history as somewhat of a classic, this one, unfortunately, will be forgotten. As any tale in this genre, a problem is encountered with the trip back in time and it becomes a dramatic race to save the future, etc.. While going back to 14th century France adds a fascinating backdrop, the overall impact is one of mild interest. The reason probably lies in the story. The character development is adequate, the inter-personal relationships are played well. Even the battle action is believable. Perhaps it’s the time machine itself and the jumps in logic in how it’s used that bogs the story down. Maybe it’s the resolution or its predictability. The extras offer plenty of documentary glimpses, but nothing is substantial or lengthy. In simplistic terms, this one is best seen as a “must rent” rather than a “must buy.” [Paramount / Doug Van Pelt]
