There Will Be Blood

The on-going battle between this independant hard-working oilman and the resident Pentecostal-like preacher in this epic, two-and-a-half-hour drama is pretty intriguing. It would be more comical if this sort of adversarial (and immature) behavior didn’t real go on so often; but some good lessons on always showing your fellow man dignity are portrayed with some serious failures by both of these characters. One is when the haughty oilman chooses to humiliate the preacher in front of his peers; and the other is when the preacher has "payback" during a salvation sequence where he’s basically slapping the devil out of this sinner’s life while up on the altar in front of the congregation. It’s a classic portrayal of rugged individualism, with both its impressive benefits and its awful flaws. It could also be seen as a refreshing wake-up call for Christians to take a sober look at the ramifications of their actions, should they neglect their influence and calling as salt and light.

Whenever a movie can make history more compelling and inspire a look back, it’s a good thing. This movie does that, even if it takes 158 minutes of your life in doing so. The bonus material further the cause as well, with an old silent film, The Story Of Petroleum. It’s certainly interesting to get a perspective on this resource now, with very real high oil prices forcing us to stare at some changes very soon. [Paramount] Doug Van Pelt

I don't get it. What is so appealing to people about this movie? We get to watch one bitter man's road to perdition while in the end also getting to see a "christian" turn out to be a hypocrite who doesn't believe a thing he says and on top of that denounces christ. And yet I've already read TWO positive reviews of this movie by whom? – Christians! Its astounding if not downright tragic. What is so artistic about senseless slaughter? If that's art I would rather be a politician. Bollocks!

I also wanted to say I think most christians give the movie praise because they want to be with the "in crowd" of today's mainstream art which is closer to depraved lunacy. I would bet all my money that any christian who has/had an education in what good art is (such as C.S. Lewis) would not call this art but only another anti-religious rant trying to establish the deception of Satan in this world. oooh, you think I'm a bigot. Well I've heard that one before, and I know that when you care what you feed your mind with your eyes eventually see the widespread darkness in modern movie-making. Don't believe me? Then go a whole month without watching a movie that is even remotely filled with sex or the abuse of the weak (such as There will be blood) , and then switch back to your previous habits after that month, and you will experience just how wretched one can feel for even calling a movie such as TWBB art, rather than what it truly is: a movie which Satan glories in. If you hate what I'm saying its probably because you don't actually believe in Satan, or you would understand how I feel. The movie is like a field-day for Satan's horrid wishes.
