Ten Commandments, The

Special Collector’s Edition

What good is a classic old movie put to DVD format? The answer in four words: 5.1 digital surround sound. This technical addition makes this mammoth home theater experience watch-able (If you’re like me, any old movie takes extra special effort to sit through.). After making it through the 220 minutes (or 231 minutes if you don’t skip through the overture, intermission, and exit music), I’d recommend a slight break before diving into all the extras.

Katherine Orrison, who wrote Written in Stone – Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic, The Ten Commandments, does an audio commentary. There’s six documentaries regarding the film’s production (on Moses, the Chosen People, the land of the Pharoahs, the Paramount lot, the score, and Mr. DeMille), and they’ve even thrown in the newsreel of the film’s premiere in New York. All of these extras show both the care and insight into the making of the film; as well as the historical impact it had on moviemaking back in the 50s.
