Tears Of The Sun

The line “God has left Africa” couldn’t be further from the truth; but with the brutality portrayed in this movie, one can see why one of the soldiers on this mission would utter such a pronouncement. While 100% action, the human element doesn’t get lost. The interplay between an unwilling missionary doctor (Monica Bellucci) that is being rescued by a Navy S.E.A.L. vet (Bruce Willis), his superiors and subordinates – all these relationships undergo change as the battles rage and the goals of the operation evolve. As the mission falls, a priest pleads with his assailants inside a sanctuary, “Please. This is a house of God.” But a machete soon makes him a martyr. The documentaries and commentaries as bonus footage underline the human tragedy on a grand scale that is actually going on while the world approves. The internal justice scale gets tipped plenty amidst the unflinching action and drama. Willis’ character, while getting the beautifal girl, shows emotional (although slight and subtle) reaction from the grateful people he helps rescue, “God will never forget you,” he is told. Tears Of The Sun has the potential to bring tears, sobs, and fists in the air. [Columbia Tristar / Doug Van Pelt]
