Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home

101 DVD Star Trek.jpg

Over the years I have enjoyed watching Star Trek, but usually chose not to, because of the inherent investment of detaching and thrusting myself into its imaginary world. This feature movie, though, broke through all those handicaps by setting the story back in 20th century earth – San Francisco, to be exact. The humor and irony weaved in makes it all the better. Like a lot of action films, the value of humanity is a theme that takes center stage (ie, the Enterprise crew attempt to save the world), as does the concept of loyalty and indebtedness (seen in Spock’s choice to stand with his accused crew and the court’s ruling in favor of the crew, respectively). This Special Collector’s Edition features more than enough footage to entertain a Trekkie party. Of special note is how William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy watch the scenes unfold in silence a bit as they comment. Also, with available text commentary by Michael & Denise Okuda (co-authors of The Star Trek Encyclopedia) the viewer gets two simultaneous commentaries while actually being able to watch the movie (in a quasi-Pop Up Videos fashion). In conclusion, another great project that utilizes this diverse format effectively. [Paramount / Doug Van Pelt]
