Second Coming, The
Writer Russell T. Davies has written a drama based upon the question, “What if God loved us so much that He sent His only Son, again?” An average bloke named Steven Baxter, played brilliantly by Christopher Eccleston (The Others, 28 Days Later), disappears for 40 days after a night at the pub and is found wandering the Yorkshire Moors muttering something about being the Son of God. He stages a press conference and pulls off a miracle as a sign to his authenticity. One of his sermons features a biting line that’s a two-edged sword: “All you Christians out there, don’t go round saying you were right and everyone else was wrong.” He affirms their convictions whilst stepping on their toes. He also makes some heavy statements about the dichotomy between our scientific advances and human ethics. The editing and pacing of the story give it very Brit style, and the presence of evil add to the suspense. The liberties taken are thought-provoking, and the conclusion could start some interesting conversations. [Shout! Factory / Doug Van Pelt]
