Ringer, The

How can a jackass like Johnny Knoxville star in a movie about acting mentally handicapped to rig the Special Olympics, and not be offensive? By giving his character a conscience and by letting the Special Olympians be real. Amazing, cheesy, but truly heartwarming. The featurettes say it all ... quite powerfully. The question was posed to some of these athletes, "How do you feel about this guy making a movie about this? And their response was: "the people who watch his show (Jackass) are the ones that bully us around in the schoolyard and call us 'retards,' so if he tells his audience/followers never to use that word again, they'll listen." They embraced Knoxville and it's apparent that lots of new friends were made on set. Footage of the public formation of this great SO organization is nice to see here, along with a Special Olympics PSA. I really expected this DVD to suck, but was overwhelmingly convinced otherwise -- for more than just "movie quality" reasons.
