Punch Drunk Love

I like arty films. I like modern and post-modern art. I love Adam Sandler movies. This film? I guess if you've got plenty of energy and an open mind, it pulls off some good stuff. You really want to root for Sandler taking on a serious role; and he does wonders with the neurotic character of Barry Egan, a self-employed wholesale middleman who jumps on crazy ideas that appear as loopholes in marketing campaigns, which has him buying loads of pudding to collect on the airline miles offered.

There are some classic scenes, like one family party where Barry corners a relative and says, "You’re a doctor. I don’t like myself."

His in-law says, "Barry, I’m a dentist. What do you think I can do?" What a sad sack.

Overall for the average movie-goer? Pass. A little too existential for a late-night viewing, at least. [Columbia Tristar / Doug Van Pelt]
