No Such Thing

If someone ever took a "made for Tim Burton story" and had someone else produce it, that movie would be No Such Thing. Director Hal Hartley does a half decent job in trying to take the fantastic and normalizing it. A man-killing monster is brought from his reclusive home in Iceland back to New York City by an angelic beauty under the employ of a lampooned tv news giant, which exploits every second of the spectacle they can. When she first meets the beast, they have an interesting conversation, where she shares, "Jesus had it all figured out right and proper. One evil deed doesn't fix another. You've gotta learn to love your enemies, too." A tragic but humorous fairy tale in a modern setting. It's a shame there's no extras; as this movie could've used ‘em. [MGM / Doug Van Pelt]
