Lord Of The Rings

I was one of the few that didn't see this in theaters last year. While the panaramic landscapes aren't quite as breathtaking on a tv screen, this is still one grandeous experience. Like the richness of the original novel, this story and mythical universe unfolds in several dimensions and captivates from beginning to abrupt end (two minutes shy of three hours later). It's hard to believe that New Line is releasing a special 4-disc extended edition in November (with 30 minutes of extended footage, including Gimli falling in love with Galadriel and Bilbo writing his book on Hobbits, as well as 30 minutes of new music recorded just for this extended version!), because this 2-disc set is loaded with extras of its own. Some of the documentaries repeat some of the same angles and footage, but still accomplish the warmth provided from added behind-the-scenes knowlege. Another plus is a preview of some of the details and characters that will play a part in the sequel — The Two Towers. If you have the pocketbook and patience for the Extended Edition, then get that; otherwise this edition is a must-have DVD. [New Line / Doug Van Pelt]
