League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The
On paper, this movie looked fantastic. British legendary super-hunter Allan Quatermain is asked by an uber-rich mogul to assemble a great collection of superheroes and stop a mad villain known as The Fantom from taking over the world. Quatermain (played by Sean Connery as a casually indifferent crankpot) commands Captain Nemo, Dracula’s Mina Harker, The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, and Dr. Jekyll, making a certain a recipe for adventure. While being set in 1899 makes it hard to compete with the futuristic X-Men movies, the story and non-stop peril, betrayal, and romantic tension make for a fairly interesting flick. Documentaries, running commentaries, and deleted scenes add more fun. [Fox Video / Doug Van Pelt]
