Indiana Jones Boxset

I'm a huge fan of this series. Back in the day, one could always find a four year old David (me, the reviewer) spelunking under the house with a woman's hat and 5 'o clock shadow. Why? Well, that’s what Indy would do. Now, to have all three movies at my disposal has been wonderful. It had been awhile, so plot familiarity was distant and imagination was piqued. It's no wonder Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were excited about creating a "James Bond [like] film" with a professor in the lead role. If the viewer is having fun, how much more are those behind the camera. Certainly the best of the three films, Raiders of the Lost Ark reveals the lovable, off-kilter archeologist Indiana Jones for the first time. His exploits are fantastic and met with a pure sense of wonder. Notable is Karen Allen's atypical female role. Faltering slightly, Temple of Doom was still a pleasure. I had forgotten how dark this sequel was. Surprisingly, many of the locations and plot additions were based from actual places. The evil and gloom surrounding the pit of fire lightened instantly by Jonathan Ke Quan's hilarious character, Short Round. And finally, The Last Crusade almost tops the first. With the addition of Sean Connery as Indy's father, the father/son dynamic reaches both serious and lighthearted levels. Reeling from Holy Grail obsession, the turn around ending emphasized the importance of life and love. This is a must have collection, good for both family and self. [PARAMOUNT / David Allen]
