I Spy

Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy turn in a hilarious 97-minute routine that’s coincidentily wrapped around a spy action thriller here. Granted, there’s gratituitous blue languange in every other sentence, but the sight and character gags and rapid delivery of one-liners make for quite a bit of belly laughter. Murphy plays flamboyant middleweight champion boxer Kelly Robinson, who gets a cell phone call from George W after a title fight, requesting his help as he travels to Hungary for another title fight that same week (!), which is how he gets teamed up with special agent Alex Scott (Wilson) for a mis-match in temperments. Much fun is had at the expense of James Bond, but the risk of danger feels much more real than a straight-up comedy would allow; so bonus points to Marianne & Cormac Wibberley for crafting this genre hybrid. One of the uber-believable scenes was a glitzy pre-fight party where KR climbs in the ring and goads his opponent into an open-handed slap fight. It’s sporty trash talking at its finest. I found myself worrying about the fighter hurting himself before the bout. [Columbia Tristar/ Doug Van Pelt]
