If you find yourself wanting to yell at a character through the tv monitor, does that mean you’re watching a good movie or a bad one? This film is good, depicting a timid man that becomes suspected of being Jewish in the burroughs of New York City in the middle of World War II. It’s fascinating and scary to see how a human can cower under the pressure of being bullied and the desire to keep peace at all costs. You’ll want to reach through the screen and throttle the guy, as he lets people walk on him, but the unflinching dramatic message on small-minded racism is stirring. The director’s and writer’s commentaries are enlightening and successfull in boosting the movie’s impact. [Paramount / Doug Van Pelt]
