Evil
A documentary/companion piece to N.T. (Tom) Wright’s book, Evil and the Justice of God, the author tackles the troubling subject of evil through a biblical lens. Disaster and crime footage offer a visual of evil, while coverage of S. Africa’s Truth & Reconciliation Commission show forgiveness at work. Wright makes some really cool statements about the existence of evil, which is debated by some.
“The Victorian ideal of progress will eventually automatically getting better and better all the time, but if it were true, we in the West would be living in paradise, but we’re not, are we?”
He takes an Old Testament look at evil, a New Testament perspective, and then explains a solution. He calls God’s plan – the Gospel story – “God’s amazingly risky adventure.”
The film concludes with Wright daring to answer how to deal with evil, using biblical explanations, but also chronicling contemporary, factual and practical examples in the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission, where murders faced their victims’ families and other leaders, telling the truth about their crimes; while the victims’ families and surviving victims (and the government as well) forgiving them. Wright describes this situation as “not complete, not final, but when you think about the civil war they were in, it’s a better way.” We in the West could certainly learn a lot from that.
Overall, this DVD is a level-headed look at a subject that’s been over-dramatized and sensationalized – all without becoming just a boring lecture. [IVP Connect] DV
