Evelyn

A wonderful heart-warming movie. The Irish have a way with cutting through the flattery and getting straight to the heart. Pierce Brosnan drops all the Bond coolness for a passionate performance as Desmond Doyle, father of two boys and one girl (Evelyn), whom he loses to the state after his wife deserts him. His fight to regain custody will have you pulling and cheering him on. In court he testifies, “The fundamental building block of our faith isn’t the holy family. It’s the Holy Trinity - the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. When my mother died, my father brought us up on his own with only the Holy Spirit to guide him. He used to say that the Holy Spirit was love. Doesn’t the Holy Bible say, ‘faith, hope and love...but the greatest of these is love?’ I’ve given up the drink. I’ve worked all the hours God sends. I’ve become a better person to try and fill myself with the Holy Spirit, so I can bring my kids up surrounded by love. That’s all I can do. No man can do more.” Evelyn herself makes an equally impressive testimony on the witness stand, as she recites a precocious prayer to the stunned crowd: "Lord God, You guide the universe with wisdom and love. Hear the prayer we make to you for our country, the beautiful country of Ireland. Through the honesty of our citizens, and the wisdom of those who govern us...may lasting peace be delivered and truth and justice flourish. Amen." It makes the viewer want to join the member of the court in patting Doyle on the back. The extras included beef up the entertainment value as well. Two commentaries underline the human drama behind the true story. [Fox Video/ Doug Van Pelt]
