Drumline

I was one of those close-minded "Disco Sucks" and "Rock 'n' Roll 4-ever" high schoolers that thought most band members were nerds. (I know they really were, but nerds are cool, too!) Given that I seriously think that half-time at a football game is a brief rest and regrouping for the athletes, sitting down to watch a movie about marching show bands did not appeal very strongly to me. Sure, I love story lines involving youth, school, and competition, but Marching Bands? I'd heard some really positive press on this flick, so I watched on. Boy, was I surprised. This ain't no boring parade marching band flick. Like Nick Cannon (who plays drumming stud Devon Miles) states in a featurette, "This is straight show-style marching band. We play that booty-shakin, pop it, drop it like it's hot type of music. You know, we got girls in the glittery shimmering things, fireworks. It's great! It's a cultural phenomenon you've just gotta see." That about says it right. It's great seeing goofball Orlando Jones playing a serious role as "Dr. Lee," the band director for Atlanta's A&T University. While the context was a surprise, the all-important storyline was compelling and light-hearted. Pretty darn cool.
