Donnie Darko

Agreeing with the critics that’ve hailed this as a cult-classic is hard, because this dark, twisting tale is so demented; but the commentary, where writer/director Richard Kelly is joined by Kevin Smith, and the featurettes go a long way in explaining this subtle love story of time travel and mental illness. One of the funniest extras is the result of a "#1 fan" contest, which allowed the winner's "documentary" to be on this Special Edition DVD. The winner filmed his at a convention where the director and some of the actors were at. He interviewed the director at his booth and then concluded by asking if he could whisper something in his ear. The director was nervous and not into this idea, but finally relented after much begging; and this fan kissed him on the cheek and he and his videographer ran away, all the while filming this mad dash and humorous and "victorious" glee. Too funny... On a serious note, the existence of God and love are explored from interesting angles in this film. [Fox Video] DV
