CSI : Season One
Crossword puzzles are too boring for television, so Jerry Bruckheimer and his team of writers created weekly 45-minute dramatic crime puzzles set in the city of Las Vegas. Instead of a whodunnit mystery, it unravels more like a howdunnit, revealing the minute and overlooked details that can crack a case. 23 episodes on six discs seem to go by fast, after the pilot’s clever character and plot patterns set up the viewer so nicely to follow the night crew of a crime scene investigator unit through its grueling, mundane, but exciting and never-ending workload. Since each of these shows are sans commercial breaks here, the chief repitition is the opening and closing credits with The Who’s classic “Who Are You” track blaring in all its bombastic glory. The commercial break swipes are predictable and kind of annoying, but certainly not in the way. The three extras are minimal, but the one documentary with the characters and writers do add a touch of perspective, but don’t reveal any great mysteries behind the show. [Paramount/ Doug Van Pelt]
