Cornerstone HM Stage Vol. 1

So, you miss HM Video Magazine, huh? The two-magazine- titles-in-one-product Cornerstone HM Stage Vol. 1 (from the 2002 C-stone fest) is the closest you'll get now. That's mighty close...to the 14 acts your Hard Music Authority brought to its tent at arguably the free world's most concentrated site of godly artistic fringe dwellers, that is. A wide swath of the musical styles covered by the titular mag gets its due. Luxury's jittery altrock to the ferocious extremity of Still Breathing bookend the DVD-R, with an EMF cover by 1000 Foot Krutch, a reunited Whitecross giving their fierce Ratt-a-tat-tat and a surprisingly touching acoustic poetry/singer-songwriter thang from Five Iron Frenzy's Reese Roper among the highlights between. HM editor Doug Van Pelt could have maybe used tele-prompting now & again, but he's a pleasingly conversational host. His oral history of the magazine he dreamed to see on newsstands alongside Rolling Stone (dream fulfilled!) numbers among the cooler bonus features. Most acts get a Van Pelt interview, too. So if you ever wanted to hear Stavesacre/Outer Circle's Mark Solomon discuss pro football, wondered whether Kevin from Disciple is as wild offstage as he is on (pretty much) or wanted to know about Miles from Crimson Thorn's tattoos, here you go. A fun start to a hopefully annual series. [Matt Leonetti Productions / Jamie Lee Rake]
