Core, The

"We have no sense of humor . . . and we're armed." Thus begins one of the "come with us/you have no choice" arrest-type scenes when the talented "crew" is being gathered by the US government to save the world. I'd heard many bad things about this film, but I was mildly impressed with the story as an action-thriller. It was interesting to see how the utter care and balance of the earth and its makeup is woven into the story. It's really an awe-inspiring thought that is a byproduct of the subject matter. Heroism and self-sacrifice are other themes that loom large. The deleted and extended scenes are fun to watch (and, like many of today's DVD extras, has scenes with and without director's commentary. It's nice to know why a scene was or wasn't cut or deleted), but they don't offer anything super significant (thus, the cutting decision being good). Like a splatter flick, you start to wonder who's going to survive the drama . . . or if anyone is going to survive! [Paramount / Doug Van Pelt]
