Chasing Papi

Only 20 minutes into this movie, I could clearly see why this one bombed. Chasing Papi takes the screwball romantic comedy style of the early 60s and tries to make it fly in 2003. Remember how watching those old movies, with over-the-top comedic gestures that just don’t seem funny? I know it’s almost blasphemy to criticize the early masters, like Ethel Merman and her peers, but it just doesn’t seem funny these days. I was pretty much bored out of my wits watching this one, but I wanted to see if Jaci Velasquez could carry or pick up the movie. Unfortunately, she doesn’t help things. I was somewhat shocked and then pridefully surprised to discover in the commentary and "Making Of" featurette that the producers were actually trying to achieve that campy comedy style that Doris Day and Rock Hudson so successfully milked back in their day. Whatever.
