Brian's Song

Re-writing a classic is hard to do. This attempt, which skipped theaters and went straight to tv and retail video, fails to top the original. The producers steered in a different direction, which helped them avoid too many comparisons. This version went a little deeper into the personal relationship and anguish between Brian Piccolo and his wife, and followed the sickness and hospital procedures a little more. However, the key question might be: Is it still strong enough to make a macho tough guy cry? The affirmative answer means it still connects to its football- loving audience. The universal themes of friendship, love, and death have a way of connecting to us all. This would’ve been a good one to add extras to, but they didn’t. [ Colombia Tristar / Doug Van Pelt ]
