Bend It Like Beckham

This international hit tells a heckuva story about chasing dreams and the struggle of offspring wanting to honor parents that do not share the same dream. Set amongst the cultural mix of Indian culture and English football, the rich tapestry woven throughout adds real detail and depth to the story, yet still comes off as relatable rather than stiff. Jess Bahmra (Parminder Nagra), blessed with tremendous talent, is forbidden to pursue it because her passion for the sport flies in the face of the “marry up” plans her parents hold. Sneaking off to play on the local women’s team becomes Jess’ habit, which humorously complicates her life. British wit flies all around in this sport comedy. Some memorable lines include one of those roll your eyes back statements by Jess’ mom: “What did I do wrong in my past life?” The mother of Jess’ friend, Jules, is also up in arms about her daughter’s chief interest: “There is a reason why Sporty Spice is the only one of ‘em without a fella.” [Fox Home Video / Doug Van Pelt]
