Anger Management

Whenever Adam Sandler does a new comedy film, my funny bone gets ready for wild and inane laughter. When I saw the trailer for Anger Management last winter, I let out an audible “whoop,” because I couldn’t wait to see how the pairing of Sandler and Jack Nicholson would turn out. As Good As It Gets meeting Billy Madison? That sounded too good to be true. While there are plenty of laughs here, I was sadly disappointed in what I’d hoped to be one for the ages. Alas, the story of one man’s attempt to marry his sweetheart does make the heart glad, so it’s certainly not a disaster of a movie, just a disappointment. The gag reel, deleted scenes, featurettes and “Do You Have Anger Problems” game all help, but even a nice commentary with Sandler and Director Peter Segal fails to beg me back to the player for repeated viewings. Sandler capitalizes on his skills at portraying the hapless sad sack yet again; and he’s surrounded by his funny friends, like Luis Guzman, John Turturro, Kevin Nealon, Bob Loughran, and Allen Covert. Truth is, even in an average film (like this one), the guy and his crew are hilarious. [Columbia Tristar / Doug Van Pelt]
