Agnes Of God

I've been waiting to see this movie for years, which was nominated for 3 Academy Awards in 1986. Jane Fonda plays a court-appointed psychiatrist ironically named Martha Livingston sent to find out if Meg Tilly's character, a young nun named Agnes, is fit to stand trial for the murder of an infant that is found dead in a small convent. Anne Bancroft stoicly plays an unmoving Mother Superior that makes it her purpose to direct Martha's investigation in one uncomplicated direction. As Martha gets to know Agnes, she becomes more and more drawn in to the nun's child-like faith that she hears the voice of God and that angels sing through her; which in turn causes her to graple with her own faith that was abandoned long ago. This serves as an interesting subplot as the mystery of this infant death unravels in the tradition of any good suspense/drama. While somewhat dark, the questions raised are provoking.
Sidenote: A friend of mine named a band after a scene he saw in this movie -- Nuns On Ice. That's just one example of the strong imagery and writing in this movie. [Columbia Tristar / Doug Van Pelt]
