Zao - All Else Failed

The chaotic sound of hardcore, after years of studio time, is finally reaching a touch of perfection. I think we've all came to expect a certain sound from this genre and thankfully this release sounds just as good as the latest few releases on Solid State. I put my copy of The Splinter Shards… up on eBay because I couldn't get past that "old school" production. Blame it on the pristine recordings of later Zao albums. They spoiled me a bit much, I guess. If you never liked the old Zao (pre - Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest) then you probably still won't. These older tracks were closer to hardcore than they were metal. Far less pitch harmonics and double bass. This album is definately for diehard Zao fans or picky audiophiles like me that want to hear these songs delivered with that slick studio sound. The spoken word parts are clear and understandable and the drumming is what you've come to expect. At its simplest form, this reissue is the modern Zao covering the classics – the same songs that were a foundation for a legion of imitators. That's the nature of the beast I guess, imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Beware of the space monkeys on the last track. They sound hungry. [TOOTH & NAIL] SETH WERKHEISER

Not a best of, but a LIVE/B-sides would be awesome. Cuz they change the songs up live.

You don't really think T&N would pass up a chance to make more money off of one of their most popular bands do you?

wasnt there a rumor going around about a possible zao dvd? is that still a possibility?

i also heard about a new ZAO greatest hits cd coming out this year sometime. anyone know any other info? (this page is turning into a perfect "zao rumors" kind of page)

oops. i forgot to say: "great review!" the thing i like best about it is that they didnt severely criticize a ground-breaking hardcore band, i havent heard a single other positive comment on the re-release of AEF. WAY TO GO HM MAG!!!!!!

Ummmm, isn't the album "All Else Failed"???

I could only define this CD as "soulless." The machine that ZAO has become has absorbed the spirit-filled classics of All Else Failed and spit out a bland, production friendly version. I swear, when I listen to this CD, I can visualize the different members sitting on stools, strumming lazily and yawning.

These songs originate from a band that was leading the spirit-filled movement, and have been re-done by a band who seems to be sick of being a band. There are rumors that ZAO re-did this album just to fufill their contract. The album just supports this rumor.

They should have left what was good alone. But they had to drag their unscarred past into their marred current state.

i wasn't a fan of the origional AEF, and personally think this is the best record they've come out with since Liberate Te Ex Inferis...

peace.

i would tend to agree withthe comment that the songs are great but if the band is not behind the lyrics then the spirit or emotion of it isn't there and in listening to the original in comparison i can definately hear a difference i am excited to hear of the resurgence of shawn former frontman of zao and his desire to bring back the spirit filled hc scene because what are we listeneing for good music or uplifting faith filled messages that will make us think and act upon our lives

I heard that they were possibly getting back together

Hey, I hadn't heard that, but they are going to be at Corner Stone. Yet another reason to go...woot!

so, anyone here read any C.S. Lewis? Cause if you don't, then you should. It will make you awesomely aware of Jesus' presents

i listened to both AEF albums back to back. and despite the death-metal-ly vocals that they have taken on in recent years, i still like the original better. i wouldn't have classified it as "soulless" as some people have. it did have better production and all that..but despite those thing... there was more life to the original. i did like it...and when i'm feeling more metally and all then i listen to the new one... it's just not something that i think i would've done as a band. it does have the feel of something done as a requirement and not as an album simply because they loved the songs so much.

To answer Joe p-town tollif a few comments back; I think Zao is another MXPX type of band, where the progress from album to album goes from "Preachy/Soapbox" lyrics to "Christian Topic" in spiritual quality. This may or may not be (and has been,) classified as "selling out", but it depends on the individual members of each band and they're reason for doing what they do. Musically they're awesome no matter how you slice it, but I think the several years of harsh criticism from Christians who think they have nothing better to do than critisize has taken it's toll. (One can see this in the lyrics to "Trashcanhands" on "Self Titled") Larry Norman, the one who started the Christian music scene to begin w/, has seen it all as far as that stuff goes. (Much respect.) I do agree that the spiritual quality is top priority, but one must first "walk a mile in [their] shoes", and "Work out [their] own salvation w/ fear and trembling" to understand the issue behind bands like ZAO. Otherwise we should just read our Bible's and (like that kid who shares my name said,) as much C.S. Lewis stuff as we can get our hands on. (Screwtapeletters rox!) &-BTW; what on earth is HXC?!? It's all hard music to me!

hey, do any of you know anything about the best of zao cd. i've seen it on a few different websites but i don't know much about it. so if you have any information on it email me or something.

..if you are a metal fan: there is a new song on mp3.com by the agony scene. you should check it out.

This is a day late and a dollar short, but oh well. Ever since I first heard "Exchange" Zao has been one of my favorite bands. In my own opinion their latter albums were some of their best work. And I felt more of a connection with the music and lyrics as they seemed to get more personal in nature. Especially "March", because I've been through panic attacks and depression. As for all those who say they sucked because they didn't preach outright, did you ever stop to think that maybe they were able to reach more people as their lyrics changed?

Hello people. First of all,i want to say i am a diehard ZAO fan,and all i need is ''The Splinter Shards...'' to finish my ZAO collection so email me if you are selling it! I have also heard of a greatest hits CD and i pray they do come out with one. Unfortunately,i have yet to see ZAO live in concert which is what ive been hoping to do after listening to ''Self-Titled'' and having my jaw drop to the floor and stay there because of how brilliant and well done that albulm was. I hope ZAO sticks around for another 10 years or so,but i know that isnt realistic.

The best of CD is called Legendary J Man, and, if you want Splinter Shards..., check out Blastbeats.com. They have pretty much everything. I am another serious fan of Zao and they were actually my first exposure to hardcore. They scared me the first time i heard them! lol. They're back again and have a new CD in the works tentatively titled "Burn Beautiful," so things are looking up.

i still think that shawn jonas is one of my favourite vocalists, based on splinter shards. he is passion and scream, not just growl. i dont care nearly as much for the post shawn (and now post jesse) zao. i felt that the new all else failed was a bit bland, and didnt have the fire under it the way the old stuff did.

ps, does anyone else think it feels odd that jesse left the band? does anyone know why?

from what ive heard he just wants to spend more time with his family, etc.(which he hasnt really been able to do the last few years). but ive also heard that he has some side projects and stuff he wants to get started on so i dont think weve heard the last of him.

so what exactly is the sound clip on the last track from? a movie? space monkeys - what is that about? hehe. sounds really wierd. but yeah, like this album. production/sound quality is good finally and I enjoyed that they didn't change the songs much, if at all, just stayed true to the original songs. Of course, the vocals were different, but I didn't really like Sean's lyrics much in the first place. To me, this sounds much better.

new zao cd coming out summer '04 on Ferret Records - SWEET! but yeah, without jessie...and the new drummer sings backup too...should be interesting.

Everybody loves to pick Zao apart, but regardless of the politics surrounding their SolidState contract or member changes Zao rocks! I'm just grateful for another albums worth of Dan screaming.

hey, does anyone know where i can find the original "all else failed" wiht shawn on vocals?
