Underoath

They’re Only Chasing Safety

The musical career of Underoath can almost be considered a double life. Before joining Solid State, melodic qualities were hidden. Then with their Solid State debut, The Changing of Times (coincidental, huh?), melody was unleashed. Hardcore screaming remained, but musically the band was evolving toward something else. They’re Only Chasing Safety takes yet another step away from metal and into hardcore punk. And while it has ups and downs as a complete album, several songs approach greatness. “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” is one of these highlights, with timely breakdowns and a haunting choir background at one point in the song. The final track, “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape,” sounds like Copeland momentarily took over the band, and then got electrocuted at the end of the song, literally catching the listener off guard. I’d call it brilliance, but it is definitely new ground that may not be favored by the old school, pre-Solid State Underoath fans. Other than this genre shift, the only other complaint goes in the “bang for your buck” category. Just like The Changing of Times, Underoath’s latest effort is slightly longer than a mere 35 minutes, with essentially only 9 songs (plus one 50-second instrumental). It goes down to the age-old quantity vs. quality debate, but at least with Underoath, the quality side isn’t lacking much. [SOLID STATE]

Whether they impress the Death Metal kiddies or not, that doesn't change the fact that UnderOATH's music is improving. This album is a masterpiece. "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" is definitely one of the highlights on the track, but then again every track on this album is amazing. Their new EmoCore style, new lead vocalist, and keyboards, are much more refreshing than their Death Metal music anyway.

I agree totally. While I am a big fan of their pre-melodic stuff, I was delightfuly surprised by the new album. It hits the eardrums hard then melts with beauty. Good job Underoath, keep it coming.

at first i was in shock, but then...oh, then i really listened to it and discovered how amazing they're only chasing saftey really is

I stumbled upon "the changing of times" shortly after it was released and loved it. While the new album is slightly in new direction I am amazed by their talent. The members are also an inspiration to myself, they love God and arent afraid to say it, Go Underoath!

this album is actually pretty good, though lacking in a few ways. i agree that "it's dangerous business walking out the front door" is a highlight. and i believe the album slowly builds up the listener's attention by the end of the album. definately a "listen through the whole album" cd.

I love this album! a good blend of Death metal and melodic music. a refresher from all of the pure screaming death metal you get tired of after an album or two.

Yeah, it's not too bad, although it most definitely has no death metal elements in it...as some of you may think.
I preferred them before this, especially The Cries Of The Past, which was an awesome album and I thought the old HXC vocals were a lot better, this is more like screaming.

Underoath is one of the greatest bands ever. I think this is a great cd, although it is short. Also it has the best screaming/singing mix ever. They have done nothing but improved since they first came out.

James, nice review. The Copeland comment is real funny, as I'm sure you are aware that it is Aaron from Copeland who makes a guest apearence on that track (just read the linner notes).

I first listened to Underoath on a Solid State mix. THe song was the "sun still sleeps". It was awesome. It was something new to listen to. THe new singer is good but doesn't match up to the old one. The new cd is good but I am really interested in checking out their old stuff.

What is a good cd of Underoath that has their old stuff on their.

Scott, it's called "the changing of times" they have some other good ones that are older and harder to find because they came-out on Takehold Records (R.I.P.).

for all you people who hate them now cuz theyre not "black/death metal" whatever the (bleep) you wanan call it....

“If hardcore kids want to like us, that’s awesome,” McTague elaborates, “but we’re not trying to impress them. And as far as kids saying we’ve sold out…kids like that just like to talk. They might be weirded out at first [by the new album], but hopefully it will catch on, but if not, who cares, you know?” - Tim From Underoath

What up my nigs, check it I havent heard this album yet which it is downloading right now. But I was a huge, huge ass fan of the "Changing of Times", and, "Cries of the Past". They both kicked some serious ass. But I didnt know that they got rid of the last vocalist. May I ask why if any of you know cause he kicked ass, it was pretty easy in understanding what he was saying when he was singing unlike other vocalist that you have to read the lyrics over and over to understand what in the world they were saying, you feel me? But other than that i am out but be expecting another say from after these songs finish downloading peaceout, may god have mercy on all of your souls. Godbless

Well, also for all the death metal fans, just check out Anam Cara. It was founded by Octivo, the ex-guitarist from UnderOATH. That should be hard enough for you.

Finally, a young band that has been heavily influenced by that boundary shattering album, the shape of punk to come, by the now defunct Refused. Everyone seems to be on the bandwagon crying sellout, but I'm over here screaming innovative, original, refreshing. Plus I can't get enough of the eerie choir that precedes the chaos on track 6. Sure the metal and hardcore roots have given way to a more melodic screamo/ sound, but with an album this good and a keyboardist that rocks out like there is no tomorrow, who cares. This album has replaced New Medicines as the best disc solid/state has put out this year. Hooray for Underoath.peace out-Noah

Oh and before I forget, Underoath has never had any "death metal" going on period. That does not take a rocket scientist to figure out, so don't post please if you are mad about the lack of death metal on the new Underoath disc. You should be ashamed of yourselves.Just kidding. No for real.

i personally don't like too much solid state has put out recently. they seem to morph bands into genres that sell better. like dead poetic... started off as some numetal rapcore crao... but then they took on the screamo thing. kind of the opposite with underoaths new junt. i prefer cries of the past. the disc is so dynamic and straight up crushing. take a listen to that versus the new one... weak. maybe it's just me.

Underoath rocks my socks off.

After having this album a while (and listening to the old stuff) i see what everyone who said 'no deathmetal' meant. it really isnt. its still good, probalby the best hardcore punk ive heard in a very long time.

First of all, no one can dispute that "cries of the past", is simply a great album, down to the last drop. And i'll admit that when i first heard "changing of times" i was a little hesitant. But "they're only chasing safety" has proven to us that they haven't forsaken their hardcore roots, but have matured as musicians...as well as christians. Those of you who imply weakness obviously have some growing up to do. This album couldn't be much better, i don't think.

I loved the new album...thats all there is to know, and thats all that matters!

These guys are awesome. I give them a lot of respect for crossing over into the secular music scene and not selling out. They are open about their faith and even say Jesus in one of their songs on their new CD. It's awesome. They don't beat around the bush they just get to the point that they are Chrisians so no one can question if they are a Christian band. God Bless. Romans 10:9

hi idont know but i think underoath is a amazing band n' they're only chasing safety is a great record

underøath kicks. Thats all there is to it....I am oon the HM Forums and that is my signiture....
The new album is great. Every song on it has been an inspiration to me...

No offense...I'm new to underoath and I love the new CD. Perfect amount of melody and screams. I keep hearing about these guys being blatant Christians who aren't afraid to share their faith but I'm struggling to understand where on the new disk they talk about it (save for the aforementioned 1 shout out to Jesus in the last song). Maybe I'm just getting too old!?

i heard underoaths new album before i heard any of their older stuff. i really fell in love with "their only chasing safety" but i also enjoy a lot of their older stuff. underoath is definatly one of the greatest bands out there in my oppinion. they arent afraid to tell the world that they are christians. just look at their thank yous in the album cover or any of their interviews. the guys in underoath are an example of how you can be in the world and not if the world... in other words they live in the world but hold true to their values as christians. God bless.

im new to listening to underOath and i havent heard a whole lot of their old stuff but i dont care what genre they are in my opinion their one of the best bands in the world i hope there next album is half as good as they re only chasing safty,
god bless

The new Underoath album blends beauty & emotion in a perfect way in my opinion. The keyboards add so much to the heaviness and melody. I love bands that mix stuff up like that. I would prefer the heavy parts a little heavier, but thats not a complaint! I heard a few people talking about the heavier stuff...you should check out Eversinceve, another band from Florida. They have clean singing, screaming, breakdowns & amazing keyboards. And, they are not even close to screamo!!! Dig it!! I do!! Cheers!

THIS ALBUM IS THE WORST ALBUM EVER. ITS WORSE THAN A SINGING TOAD ON THE HOOD OF A COMBINE IN MID SUMMER WHILE A LOAD OF TURKEYS RE-SHINGLE A ROOF AND EAT UP LARGE JUICY BEETLES AND USE PROFANITY A LOT. THE VOCALS ARE AMAZINGLY STUPID AND EVERYTHING SOUNDS LIKE BLINK 182. HOPELESS. WORTHLESS. I'VE NEVER HEARD A WORSE ALBUM IN MY LIFE. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM EVER!!!! TELL EVERYONE TO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM!!

i LOOVVVVVVE underOATH! they are the best thing...ever! i have never loved any band with that style music before. i thank God that He has blessed them with such great talent!

I too love the latest Underoath. To be honest, really hated their first cd, mostly because I like more singing than screaming... but man alive, this latest disk just rocks my socks off and is definitely on my "top 10" cds of the year. While the album is WAY too short, I have yet to get sick of it despite listening to it over and over and over. I think their best song is the last track. Partly because it is so different from the rest of the album. Its lyrics combined with amazing dynamics, it just blows me away every time. On another note, anyone who hasnt' seen them live yet, DO IT. The energy of their show is very worthwhile.

i think that if peopl think of underoath as a different band, when listening to t.o.c.s. they will be more in favor of it, if u look to compare ti to their old tuff u will be let down, no doubt that their new stuff is genius, no doubt that theyr old stuff kicked, but theres so many other bands that are as raw as UO used to be that fans of the black metal can always find sumthing else to satisfy their hardcore needs, they are way more unique on the new album than ever before, no one can match them on stage, or on the way they fuse hardcore and screamo together, w/o ending up with it sounding like the typical silverstein/my chemical romance, type crap.

the new stuff is good i guess... but with the drastic change that they had i thik maybe its time for a new name for the band...... new sound should also mean a new name......not like its gonna happen.... but oh well....

Hi, This is Fabian from the Middle east...Underoath = Death Metal ? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.....Anyway these guys rule!!!! My only dislike is the lack of screaming....I hope and pray that these guys make it BIG

one thing...this CD is a must have for most of everyone in this kind of music

Good Review. Underoath is still finding their sound and to me all of it has ben pretty good. I think they are really trying to get the listeners into a bunch of different styles yet they are trying to keep a little bit of their style still there. To me Underoath still rocks. Rock on.
