Tourniquet - Where Moth and Rust Destroy

Tourniquet is one of the longest running bands in Christian metal. Led by drummer and chief songwriting mastermind Ted Kirkpatrick, the band has unleashed some of the most aggressive, technically proficient, and awe-inspiring pieces of work in all of music.
Their latest, Where Moth and Rust Destroy, sees guitarist Aaron Guerra exiting the band after nearly nine years, and the addition of bassist Steve Andino. Luke Easter's vocals are strong as usual. The drum sound is huge, and the double bass presence is perhaps more abundant than on any other Tourniquet release. Ted played all the rhythm guitars, and guests Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth) and Bruce Franklin (Trouble, Supershine) handled lead duties. Some of Friedman's brightest solo work is displayed, particularly on the epic "Healing Waters of the Tigris." A great song with a very Middle Eastern flair, the guitar solo interplay mid-song lasts three minutes, and marks what could be looked upon as one of the best Tourniquet songs ever. Franklin makes his mark on "A Ghost at the Wheel," as well as part of "Convoluted Absolutes." Many of the songs have a very heroic, larger-than-life feel to them, and Kirkpatrick's love for all things classical is abundant, shining particularly bright on "Drawn and Quartered" and "Architeuthis." Album closer "In Death We Rise" is the slowest tempo of any Tourniquet track. It's doom-laden and gloomy, with vocals that are barely decipherable, an intentional move by the band. To keep the unique, bizarre buzz of the guitars, the vocals had to be kept low in the mix. Definitely a first for a Tourniquet song.
With a band as gifted and talented as Tourniquet, it becomes difficult to cover new ground, and Where Moth and Rust Destroy isn't necessarily an innovative departure. But, it's Tourniquet, and therefore guaranteed to be head-and-shoulders above the musical landscape. [METAL BLADE] CHAD OLSON

I have only heard The title track, Where Moth and Rust Destroy, and Restoring the Locust Years. Those to tracks are great. From what I can tell, the review of the album seems to be warmly accurate, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the Album! Tourniquet never disapoints (and if they do, it may be cause your brain is to small, or has been overloaded with the brilliant compositions that Ted Kirkpatrick puts together:).

I've already heard two tracks off this album and they rip!!! The review has raised my hopes even higher, as the two songs I've heard are ones that are not mentioned in the review. To say that "Healing Waters of the Tigris" is "one of the best Tourniquet songs ever" is making a huge claim. I only hope that it's true. Cool review!!! Buy this album if you like ANY type of metal. The musicianship is unsurpassed.

This review rocks!

I also have heard the two tracks and can't wait to get this album. The solos on this album RIP! Look for the best guitar work in a long time on this one

Chad Olson, I don't suppose you'd be willing to lend me your copy of Where Moth and Rust Destroy until March 25th ;-)

Um, no. But only one month to wait. Until then, let my review serve as an appetizer.

I ordered last week, and the anticipation is killing me but I trust we won't be disappointed... God bless all...

Stahl Hochdahl and Tourniquet forever!

Awesome review. I've heard the title track, but where have you people who dont have the cd heard the others? I'm very curious, and a bit impatient. :)

To say the very least, Tourniquet is one of the most musically diverse and talented bands out there, and I am so stoked about this new album. Ted Kirkpatrick is the most technical drummer ever and the guest guiatarists are a welcome treat. I can't wait to get my hands on this album!

Chad,

Must have been a tough gig for you-writing about Tourniquet!!! How's Florida?

Got mine today! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!! So awesome!

I'm a radio DJ and I got the cd a few weeks back. The cd comes out Tuesday... GO AND BUY IT! I am! Not only to continue the collection, but because, as people have been saying here... IT RIPS!
Tigris is a great song Chad, but to say the best, that would mean, 'Skeekix' and 'Harlot Widow..' and 'My Promise' would have to step aside.
It's nice to see that Metal Blade is trying to sell to radio that 'Locust Years' is a rock track. We are adding it here in Bay City, MI, but I'll be suprised if it hits Top 40 on the R & R rock chart, metal chart on ChristianBeats.com for sure, but as a rock track? We'll see.
One thing that I miss is Luke singing and not yell-sing as he does on this new album...

Wow!! I've not heard any of the new songs yet, but I really like Snakes in the Playground, and I'm hoping this will be good too! I also like their older stuff like "The Worm" and "Fist Full of Bees". One thing really awesome about Tourniquet is their lead guitarist, Troy. His use of wah is really cool. Of course the drumming is awesome, and Dale's vocals are outstanding. Keep it up, Tourniquet!!!

I'm glad it made you laugh Cliff! :) I have seen Bride in concert and would love to see Tourniquet sometime. Ted Kirkpatrick is an incredible musician. Hope everyone enjoys this newest CD, and thanks again Chad for the great review! All of us wish we could be Chad for just one day!

one word......KILLER!

Funny, back then!?! I bought their first album (dont remember the name) and I believe there second album Psycho Surgery and loved it. It was the first time I heard a band so intense (besides Whitecross) I saw their new album in a Music Wherehouse and the cover was as intense as their Psycho album. So after much deliberation (16.99!?!?) I bought it. I like the song Where Moth and Rust Destroy but after awhile the guitar solos sound the same....different notes but the same tones. I recommend this album because it Rocks. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. KEEP ROCKING Ted!!!! Hey add some spanish guitar picking for flava on your next one!!!!

Just another expected AWESOME release by Tourniquet. Before I listened to the stuff I do now (Christian Death Metal -- a.k.a. Metanoia, Immortal Souls, Kekal, Soul Embraced, etc...) I never really liked Tourniquet...until I sat down and LISTENED to them. I heard them, but I never listened to them. Awesome drumming by Ted "You can't outdo him" Kirkpatrick, of course. From "Stop the Bleeding" all the way to "Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm" Ted has been putting forth his amazing God blessed musical talents, and allowing me to reach out to friends that don't know the Savior, all by the talent that Tourniquet expresses through their music. "Where Moth and Rust Destroy" IS Tourniquet, and just like all the others, IT ROCKS!!! Keep it up Tourniquet, and God bless!

Tourniquet é a melhor banda, cd muito massa mesmo, pra mim a "Convoluted Absolutes" é a melhor, the best.

God Bless.
