Thrice
Vheissu

Oh my gosh! Is that a ouiji board? This must not be a Christian band! While the occult is pretty strongly condemned in the Bible, having unique album cover art was not painted as sin. What might be a greater sin, I jest, is neglecting to “encounter” this great new Thrice album. Two lines on this album might do more for my personal spiritual growth than a month’s worth of sermons: “...as long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart / and there’s no greater love, than that one shed his blood for his friends.” Treating people with dignity is preached pretty loudly with subtlety in “Image Of The Invisible,” all to a chant-along chorus that’s as infectious as Comeback Kid. This is a band that’ll win almost as many “cute points” as any of those bands with days of the week in their names, but also rally the boys with their tough-guy riffage. Even the picky musician types have plenty to be impressed by, as Thrice’s rhythm section is tight, progressive, and exploratory. If you’ve waited this long to check out Thrice, this could be as exciting as those days when you discovered U2, The Alarm, or The Call. [Island] Doug Van Pelt

This is the best album released this year.

see makeshift3.com for true punk rock.

I recently noticed this CD being sold on a Christian CD store site and bought it - amazing!! Doug, have you ever interviewed them for "so and so sez" or a regular article? I'd be interested in what they have to say.

I never really listened to Thrice but after reading what Jess S. said and reading the review of their release. I am impressed that these guys are "christian" and more impressed that they gained the respect of those on the Vans Warped Tour! Kudos to Thrice!

thrice deffanatly is one of the best..there is a debate over if they are "christian" though, i think they are a christian band but some people would disagree, i thinks it all in how you interprate the lyrics.

I have been a Thrice fan for 3 years now. A friend told me about this amazing band and told me to listen to Artist in the Ambulance and at first i didnt like them too much and then on futher listening i grew to love them. I began to turn my other friends on to thrice and they all started to love thrice. And all this time i knew something was differnt about them. well after reading a lot of there lyrice and listening to Stare at the Sun on the Artist in the Ambulance CD i began to think that they were christian. Well after Vheissu came out i knew that they had to be christian with there lyrics. I talked to a friend and he said that he goes to church with the lead singer (Dustin Kensure) at a big church in souther cali . well i have heard that everyone in the band are chirstians but riley the drummer. I think it is soo awesome that a band like thrice can be a christian band that no one knows and they play secular shows is more powerful then most chirstian bands. Dustin had said that he wants to make sure that all of his lyrics are meaningfull to everyone. But when they dont say if they are christian it helps because for some people if they know that a band is christian they automaticly dont like the band, Thrice makes people search for a deeper meaining in everything with out turning people away

i had no clue this band was a christian band..or at least has christians
in it

While Dustin is a Christian, Thrice is not a "Christian band." Let's praise God that his bandmates are cool with him writing about his faith, but let's not go crazy with the "Christian band' label.

As to artwork, after I reviewed Vheissu on my blog, I got some questions on the nature of the album artwork and the lyrics. You can view my response here:

The cover of the album would make a horrible Ouiji board. Some trivia: Parker Brothers owns the patent to the Ouija board which was designed in the 19th century.

I officially love Thrice. I started reading the lyrics awhile back and i was like AWESOME. It's really cool that there's a band with christian views and members that are contemporary and have meaningful lyrics. When I first heard them i could tell they were different than all the other secular music and immediately fell in love. knowing that its christian makes it even better. it really doesnt matter to me if they call themselves a christian band or not. its all on your point of view.

that's a heavy comment to make "this is the best album this year"

My listening to Thrice goes way back to 1999 with their indie release of "Identity Crisis" on SubCity Records. I initially heard them on the first installment of the "plea for peace" comps that included the likes of AFI, Alkiline Trio, the Ataris, and Thrusday to list only a few...and Thrice's song "To What End" was by far the stand out track. Now, six years and three records later, Thrice has evolved into one of the elite, dare i say, groundbreaking bands of this decade. With "Vheissu", they have managed to eliminate any genre they may have previously been stuck under. They are not screamo. They are not hardcore, or post-hardcore for that matter. They are Thrice, combining eliments familiar to Radiohead and the Deftones, and then adding their own secret ingrediant that has kept fans and grasped new fans interests for the past trio of records. I have heard some people say that this shouldn't be the first record you buy if you have not ever heard Thrice before. But on the contrary, any record they have made would be a great intro to the band, being that every record has an identity of its own. But Vheissu is definatly the most mature I have seen come from Dustin, Teppei, Riley, and Ed. Lyrically, Dustin poetically delivers his messages of faith and hope. Musically, they have learned that shredding is not always needed, and at some points, not even appropriate to create a stand-out, killer song. Take "Music Box". The music box loops runs through the whole song and they deliver their melodic, yet heavy sound on top of it, making it an instant work of art. I could honestly go on forever about Thrice, but to make it short a little late, you owe it to yourself to listen to Thrice!

yeah, it is a heavy comment, and i guess its merely my opinion, but i seriously saw so much good in this album on every level. pristine production, great dynamics of loud to soft, flawless musicianship, great hooks, appropriate intensity, creative timing and song structures, and most importantly a clearly conveyed message of hope and truth. just my opinion, but what other album offered this in 2005?

Demon Hunter...seriously i love Thrice, but DH took it this year with the best record the Triptych is tight ..inventive..the riffs and the drum hooks want to make to march to war for christ..they have litterly blown back on the scean with haunting hard riffs and with a "metal worship" since deffently iwth them...and with there new album the Triptych there is No question that they are a christian band or what they are singing about,a shanra where that type of music is shunned they are standing firm for christ and not letting the world influence..who or..what they say they are...period

It is hard for me not to see that Dustin is a christian. His lyrics in Vheissu are so strong and powerful it's amazing. I haven listened to Thrice since Their First Impressions Ep and loved them ever since. This album voices their faith more than any before. Dustin talks about his faith almost openly.. and thats hard to deny with a song titled "Image of the invisible" which is one of many names that people called Jesus. Along with bold statements like "There is no greater love than the one shed his blood for his friends" and "once again the bread and wine but it seems the meanings maybe deeper still this time"

I bought the album almost on faith hoping what I thought of Thrice was true: that Dustin was a Christian and was using this avenue of "secular" interest to voice his soul. Though I'd listen to anything that glorified God it helps that the album Vheissu is so beautifully rendered. It just rocks my socks right off.. can't say enough good about it. I haven't listened to Demon Hunter but I'd vote Vheissu as best album of the year.

this band rocks! I got hooked on the band when i first heard image of the invisable. The whole album is amazing! Check it out if you have not.
