Stapp, Scott

The Great Divide

I had planned on making this a small review in the back of the Album Reviews section, but it seemed an opportunity to make some commentary on Mr. Creed. The lyrics here say all the right things: repentance, contrition, humility (even though there’s some vengeful finger-pointing at his critics), vulnerability, and honesty. But I have hard time believing it when I look at the leather pants and read news reports about drunken brawls with the members of 311, etc. Being in the spotlight puts you square in way too many people’s cross-hairs, but it seems this guy doesn’t help fix any of his PR disasters. Maybe it’s true that frontmen possess way to many self-destructive tendencies.

The Great Divide begins exactly where Creed left off. Stapp’s disgruntled former bandmates (Alter Bridge) predicted that his next album would sound exactly like Creed, and they were right. This will be music to the ears of the Creed fans that still remain faithful. The rest of the music-buying public needn’t give this album a second look. The balladry is here. The musicians backing Stapp up certainly hold their own, providing a solid riff ‘em section in both the performance and songwriting and that’s no small feat. For the curious Christian, all the right words are used here, weighing heavy in contrition. No spectacular heights are reached here, but neither is this a step-down from Weathered. While this might keep the Creed fan warm for several nights, he seems to be coasting. If the sole image of his rear (visible through the disc spindle as it sits atop the clear jewel case) is any message or indication, this seems to be an artist that doesn’t care.

In your recent review of Scott Stapp new CD, I couldn’t decide if you were reviewing his personal life or the music he created for the CD? You seem more caught up in the rumors and him weather leather pants than the music.

I agree. The reviewer seems more interested in "finger-pointing" at the artists personal life than at some really great music he greated.

Here the reviewer is intent on reviewing the personal life of Scott Stapp, while for many years this very same reviewer wrote wonderful reviews of Kings X cds never once questioning the singer/bass players homosexual lifestyle which goes against biblical teachings. Hey Doug sin is sin in Gods eye and if you are going to expose and question one artists "faith' then you should be fair in doing so.

HM is a Christian mag, right? Should an album review be discussing personal life at all? If so, shouldn't we all give someone some latitude in life and and at least an element of grace like that which was provided to all of us?

Creed/Stapp is teh suck....go bible thump to some good music. Stapp is a clown and so are the people that still follow him. Nooges.

Wow. There's alot of sensitive Creed fans with thin skins out there...
My opinion is that you can't even fill two paragraphs of a music review if the music is bland and generic heavy rock. Also this is a guy who let his fans believe for a long time that he (Creed) was Christian, wether or not he declared that or not, they didn't do much to disprove it. When the fruit of your branch shows one thing, and the words from your mouth says another, well, people will notice. The reviewer was merely pointing out the contrast. If Stapp wants to put out un-offensive lyrics on top of cliche' beats, more power to him. It's better than what his peers in that genre do. I'm no fan of it, but obviously others are. Doug is a consistently fair, thoughtful, engaged and educated reviewer of many styles of music.

I don't know what's worse, two branches of Creed (Scott Stapp, Alter Bridge) or one Nickelback? I guess you would have to call it the lesser of two evils, kind of like our last election.

Have any of you been to a concert? My brother and sister-in-law went to the Scott Stapp concert at the Rave in WI. Dispite the difficulty in hearing above the music and noise of the room I heard words of hope and joy; he expressed a joy that he has found God and let the audience know God wanted a relationship w/ them all too. It doesn't matter a persons clothes or mistakes that explode in the media and rumors, its the change of heart and it'll show thru actions and words.

The only difference between Scott Stapp and the rest of us is that when he fell, he got caught. I recently read a really good interview with him and YES he is a Christian and YES he's had some issues. How about we pray that
God would use him instead of trashing him? Every time you point the finger at someone there are going to be 3 or 4 pointing back...But by the grace of God ther go I also.

I totally agree with Darren on this subject. I also have been to a concert recently and God's presents WAS THERE! We need to find out the facts and ask God to show us and NOT go on what we hear from others! We all have sinned. Me and my wife believe that God is using Scoot Stapp as a gap-bridger from the unsaved to the eventually saved side. I'm not nesseceraly saying you will see an alter call at one of his concerts but God IS using him. We as christians DO NEED to pray for him and even other artists, saved or unsaved!

You guys are reading something else. You act like this is a heretic hunt. My earlier comment on "Thin skins" really, truly applies here. Most of the criticism was made in referrence to his music. Anyways, when your a celebrity of sorts, or in the spotlight, you have to behave accordingly, especially if you claim to follow Christ. You are a role model no matter what Charles Barkley says. What kind of image of Christians are you portraying when you act like a vulgar drunken sailor (I've been guilty) but many, many times? Or filming yourself in an orgy and then releasing the film to the public. Oh, but wait, the only difference between him and us is that he's been caught. Gimme a break. Wake up. As a Christian I can and do forgive. I can even be understanding of this kind of behavior because we are human and have our own flesh to contend with. But you actually have to GO to "war with the flesh", as Paul put it. Stop making excuses for him. If you like his music, great. But honestly.....

He did not release that video to the public-by the way-it happend like 6 years ago! And to say 'like a vulgar drunken sailor' is a bit harsh. I don't know him personally but I've been to a recent concert and even his old music has a different feel(I believe it's God). And you know what, he even used the D-word with some PUNKS that started fighting in the front. He said 'I don't give a D___!' and went on about how it was stupid that they were fighting there. I did'nt have a problem with what he said.

Wow. This is amazing, in an underwhelming sort of way. I never bought any of this guys music. I never watch MTV or any video channels for that matter. But I know more about this guy than some of his fans do. You are a trip dude. You think that Mr. Stapp is somehow leading people to Christ at his concerts? You think his music is God? Or had a different feel that was God? Come on man. Well I'll tell you, I have a hard time believing that God would need to use a guy who doesn't give a D___ about some PUNKS to lead people to His Son. Thats what the Holy Spirits job is. I'm not trying to be mean, I only say you should put aside the fact that you are Creed/Stapp fan and think about the implications of these statements. I enjoy lots of music by musicians that are either Godless heathens or merely not Christian, and I have a Christ given love for them, but I'm the first one to say they're wrong.

Hi, i've been reading everyones comments and now I would like to respond. For one I believe that God uses many different people in many different ways and no matter what we say or do if we keep judging these people that God may or may not be using than we'd better watch out because when we stand before Christ then we are the ones that will be judged for standing agianst Gods messanger. maybe you don't like the style of his music and maybe you just don't like the life he led before but remember it's not about us it's about God and his Kingdom and if God is using him then God will work out the imperfections. Just pray for him!!

You know what, I'm not trying to start any net-fights! BUT you really are not understanding me. I did not say he's literaly leading people to Christ. Like Dawn was saying, God uses different people in different ways. Maybe the Holy Spirit is planting seeds in fertal ground which I REALLY think can be done by being at just 1 concert! And I DID NOT say he said he did'nt give a d___ about the punks but what they were doing. ARE YOU PRAYING FOR HIM!!!!!!!!!
