The Party People - My My EP
The Party People live up to their name and self-proclaimed purpose (“to rock ‘n’ freakin’ roll”), kicking out likable jams appropriate for every blue-collar bash. While the My My EP lacks the passion and the abandon of their Detroit forebears – and I’m talking more about the MC5 than the White Stripes, whom The Party People nearly eclipse – there are moments when Eric Collins (of Denison Marrs’ fame) howls convincingly enough to shake off the vocal effects that keep the EP from pulling a chin-up on the bar set by Jon Spencer or The Delta 72 or The MakeéUp. So, that’s good and bad. The Party People have no trouble “getting to the hook,” and that makes the first half of each song catchy and exciting, but there isn’t enough substance to last until the end. I don’t stop dancing, though, so what’s the problem? [VELVET BLUE] ADAM ROBINSON
