Miracle Of You, The

I guess I’m still holding out for something better. It’s not like the Miracle of You didn’t put out a decent EP—they’re technically sound and bring the breakdowns—but it feels like it’s missing something. Drop it in, and I couldn’t tell you a thing that would separate them from the rest of the drones of grind-core bands out there.

The Sound and Shape EP kicks off with an instrumental, but with only six total tracks (including said instrumental), I kind of wish they’d left it off altogether or added it to the beginning of the second track, “The Memory of Running.” And let me iterate here: the Miracle of You is out to see you get nuts at their live show. It seems like these guys wrote almost every song just to be played in a live set, from the first song through the rest of the EP. You can picture the hardcore dancing as you listen to the CD. These five guys from New Jersey and Virginia have crafted breakdown after breakdown — some great, some mediocre — with peppered singing and guitar licks.

So while not a terrible record, I would hope the band finds a way to tear themselves away from the hordes of other bands out there that want to be crazy on stage and get the crowd moving at their show. At the end of “The Memory of Running,” they finally hit that nail on the head with a good minute-long sweeping, soft guitar movement before diving into a combination scream/sing ending. If they can keep pulling more surprising parts like this on their full-length, I’d be way more interested in putting the record on repeat. [Hot Foot] David Stagg
