Headnoise - S/T
The members of Headnoise were nice enough to raid their vaults for a remixed and remastered version of their early out-of-print material. While raw and still bare in its essence, these 16 tracks pack a wonderful punch of old school melody and infectious DIY energy. The studio fix-upping that was done was able to get rid of annoying things like tape hiss without robbing the songs of that passionate oomph that make this recording worth checking out. Most fun is the cowpunk intro for “Rush Hour on Skid Row” that would be the perfect concert intro, and thus works great here as the lead-off track. Another worthy gem is “Unity,” whose single-string guitar lead intro sets up the rallying cry of a chorus with just the right amount of tension. Two extra bonus cuts include a new song, called “Slimey Creatures,” and a radio special from a California college radio station (KUCI) that included a few live-in-studio performances (“Heads Like Humans” and “Rush Hour...”). Much kudos to Grrr recordS for making this available again. [GRRR] DOUG VAN PELT
