Further Seems Forever - How to Start a Fire

With the sound of a lighting match only a few seconds after the play button is pushed on the stereo; all fears, as they often say, are put to rest as Further Seems Forever kicks off their sophomore full-length album How To Start A Fire with the commanding title track which opens the record and quickly disarms all naysayers and critics. Despite the doubts of many, Further Seems Forever have pulled it off again! With new lead vocalist Jason Gleason on board; Chad Neptune and Co. fill our ears with the sound that they first gave us with their debut record The Moon Is Down and the From The 27th Estate E.P. The band jumps effortlessly from the opening title track into "The Sound," which has been burning up the mp3.com charts over the past few months. Comparisons to Dashboard frontman/ex-Further vocalist Chris Carrabba are inevitable, but let it be known that Gleason is not a clone. The two share some vocal similarites, but stand as two seperate entities. "On Legendary" features an elegant piano accompaniment during the verse before the drums kick in and the band launches into full swing with Jason exhibiting his excellent vocal range, showing that he's not content to live in Carrabba's shadow. He pulls this same vocal muscle on "The Deep." These, along with songs like "Against My Better Judgement" and "Pride War" also show off Jason's voice amazingly. "Blank Page Empire" and "I Am" are excellently well written midtempo tunes that are reminiscant of tracks from TMID like "Snowbirds and Townies" and "Monachetti" that feature steady and lilting verses before driving into a melody packed chorus. "Insincerity" features an extremely catchy guitar harmonic that manages to reach points of catharsis throughout the song as the band stops and starts with their signature emotional breakdowns. The albums' final track, "Aurora Borealis," opens quietly with a single guitar playing quietly along with Jason's floating voice and leads into static and background noise before going into a few moments of what sounds like a string section joining the fray. From there, the music floats back into random noise and static as the album closes quietly and suddenly. [TOOTH & NAIL] KRISS STRESS

I have to agree with my friend Kriss on this one.

All I know is that this album has to be better than when i saw FSF live at Purple Door 02. There it seemed that their new singer was trying to be Chris and it just sounded bad. I'll be checking this out though.

This is a great album and it gives you a kind of simple joy to listen to it. I think the music is better with Jason as a vocalist than when they had Chris Carrabba.

I agree with Alissa. Jason is much better for the band than Chris was. Chris is awesome and I really do like his stuff, but he is a sellout. I'm glad he's gone and I welcome Jason. Great things are ahppening for them since.

i'd just like to say that this cd is great. I was a little worried that it wouldn't live up to the moon is down, but to my suprise it did. I have to disagree with Dented and Alissa though. I definatly don't think Chris Carraba is a sell out. He is one of the greatest writers (lyrics) i have ever heard and has a great voice. He just did what his heart led him to do and it worked out for both him and fsf. Also how can you say he's a sell out when his music hasn't changed at all and he tries to stay away from the spot light. Well thats just what i think.

I have to first say: "Kriss Stress captured this album in a near perfect review. I hope he will be able to continue covering bands I love, cuz he makes them sound like they are tha shizzy!"

Second: The sell out thing is so 1998!!!

Third: I like the fact that Jason sound similar to Chris in many ways. It allows for continunity between the two albums. Now, I said similar. I feel in many ways Jason is able to deliver a much stronger vocal in the moments where it is needed to give the lyric an edge. Chris simply would not be capable of that. To say I prefer one would not be possible as I am a fan of all of Carabba's work, as well as Gleason's.

This is a great album, one of the best albums I've ever heard and Jason is a great singer, but to say that Chris Carraba is a sellout is about the dumbest things I've ever heard.

this album is really good. less crying about girls and more singing about inspriation and life. i definentely i huge fan of Chris Carraba, but i do think it was for the best that he left. FSF new cd also has musical variety, and Jason's voice is very goo and strong. i do like a lot of sad songs about girls but i don't really think it was exactly the true style of FSF. I love the new album.

chris carraba is a sell out. He ditched his spiritually inspiring band to go sing in front of tennage girls about how his girlfriend broke up with him.

yet, now with Gleason (who said the F---- word several times in interviews), the christian influence is gone. There are no references to God or spiritual growth in this album.

Its great music. It is a good album. However, their identity is gone. This is not Further. This is a good band but just that. They were a good band with a beautiful message. They were something special. The songs are very inspiring, its just not the same.

Jake,
maybe the reviews you were reading were when he first became lead singer, because jason became a christian soon after he joined the band. maybe you are missing something, but this album is very spiritual, and the lyrics are very good. read the new interview in hm magazine.

kriss stress is missing!

Chris Carraba is a sellout!!!

Chris Carraba is awesome and is the hottest man alive!!

i've seen FSF live when they had chris and most recently with Jason. Jason's stage presence is way better. The band also has this great undiscovered chemistry now that they didn't have with Chris. Jason is a much stronger vocalist and his range is incredible. Aside from that he's just a really nice guy. He's totally cool.

As far as Jason saying the F word in interviews... he was saved the day he tried out for the band. no joke. Everyone has their struggles. People make mistakes. He's not any different than the rest of us. I've seen Christian bands who drink and do all sorts of stuff that we aren't supposed to do as christians but they don't have to answer to me, and I don't know their hearts. Neither do any of you. I don't get why people care so much about what the other kid is doin. or how some ppl like to hold Christian musicians to a higher standard then anyone else, including themselves. Just take care of yourself for crying out loud. Let God deal with them. sheesh.

To lindsey: no. no. no. please exit stage right. now would be a good time. thanks.

I listen to both FSF and Dashboard and I Dont think Chris has sold out, obviously left for his own reason and its worked out better for both parties. If you think of what if chris had stayed, creative differences might have done more damage then good. But he has left and Jason has come in and done a great job helping FSF move foward with a great voice. I hope they all keep being doing what they love and be sucsessfull at it because I really injoy both their music

Hey I think that chris is a real down to earth person and his decision to do his own thing was his to make and people shouldnt judge him

i for one absolutely love chris carrabba and dashboard confessional. they are almost my favorite band. but i think we all need to start seperating Chris and Further. yes they have had a past but man all i see in every Further article is Chris this and Chris that. I am sure they would like to make a name for themselves. They are an incredibly awesome band and rock hard. and Dashboard is equally as good. but they are different and just because they used to be intermixed does not mean they still are. of course if you are writing an article about Further you're gonna mention the fact that Chris was in the band but really that should be it. instead of saying "well this guy sounds like Chris and the lyrics are like this song that they had when Chris was the singer.." get what i mean? i think Further has done a great job forging ahead after losing such a great frontman and look at all the succes they've had!!

i actually met Chris Carraba after one of his Dashboard gigs lastNovember. He was really quiet and hardley said a word, he just mumbled and then walked off. I was real let down but they say you are alwaays dissapointed when you meet your heros.

umm... well my opinion is that both cd's are horrible and i hate all you wining people i think you should cry about stop crying about the breakup between you and your girlfriend and start crying about the breakup of ur band after people realize how much shiz this is i hate fsf

ok... i recently had the "privalage" wait..... the HELL of attending the concert of four members that come together to form the deffinition of efing shiz also known as "dashboard confessionals" (chris sux) thank you for your attention

due jake, did you even listen to tis album. there are spiritual and god references all through it. go and listen to "how to start a fire", "the sound", "a blank page empire", "against my better judgement", "i am", "pride war", on legendary", "insincerity is an artform", "the deep", and "aurora borealis" and tell me that there is not spiritual underlinings.
