Fringe - Sacrifice

There’s a clear line between music that’s written for girls and music for boys. I’m speaking of the teenage and college age demographic here, of course. Granted, you can occasionally find a pretty, petite girl swinging her fists and spinning around in the pit; but most rock with a heavy edge is aimed towards that testosterone-pumping angst-ridden male with spending cabbage in his pocket. And he’s the one that either sits there with his arms crossed at a show, head and neck working out a synchronized dance with the beat; or he’s wailing away at the air in pure energy (with the occasional violent injury either given or received). Nowadays, rock music aimed for girls is either churned out by dateless boys wearing their emotions on their tattoo-sleeved arms or a group of 4 or 5 smartly dressed college boys that privately listen to Hootie & The Blowfish, Third Day, and the Dave Matthews Band. Fringe would be of the frat rat variety – soft, jangly guitars and vocal harmonies wrapped around tried and true hooks. I’d bet their album budget that all four of these guys are either married or in very serious long-term relationships with beauty queen girlfriends; and one or more of them probably lettered in sports while in high school five or ten years ago. Sweetly produced with sonic perfection, Jason Clark’s vocals fit nicely over the layers of acoustic, electric, bass guitar, feathered drumming, and piano that adorn these 13 songs. Dont listen to Hootie, PLEASE, No Third Day...Can't deny DMB's talent...Beauty Queen wife, absolutely...Two kids...distain for the pit, but still a rocker...haven't been an angst-ridden male for quite some time, I grew up... would rather play hope-filled songs for pretty girls with taste and frat boys with spending cabbage. Say hi to Doug for me. God Bless

I like my music hard and intelligent. So I can say that as a reviewer of music you have become the most indier than thou, (aka INDIEOT) that has ever written a column. Since when was reviewing music about your opinion of fashion or social culture. I am really sorry that some guy on the football team gave you a few wedgies, but you really need to listen to the music before you write a review. This album is well produced masterfully crafted, and intelligent, which is more than I can say for your review.

Hey Tatoo guys play sports!!

so everyboyd needs to be good charlotte now? there are more than 3 guitar riffs in the world. i guess they should have put the word "the" in front on fringe (the vines, the white stripes, the donnas, the reviewer's band, etc.) right on, rad review, i'm headed to the salvo to buy some levi 501 blues, chuch taylor's, wrist bands, and my new old cowboy shirt. rawk on !!! punk lives forever, talented or not. usually i read reviews for opinions on music, but this stereotyping was so much more fun...............

so can anyone actually tell me about the music on the cd? i have heard of fringe and was wondering if anyone knows anything about them?

Do you even play an instrument or sit behind a desk all freakin day? I am sorry man, you must have had a rough day or something. Go out to eat, and relax. Life will get better.....promise. It's been a long time since I've read something that off.

Wow man, I must say that you have deep-rooted issues. Did your mother not hug you enough? I always thought that a music review was about the music, not the reviewer’s childhood traumas. Fringe is possibly the best thing to hit Christian music in YEARS. With a sound of their own reminiscent of the DMB, and U2/Sting vocals, phenomenal drumming and deep intense lyrics, I cant think of any band that is close, in the Christian and Secular market. There is help for you yet man, I know of a great psychiatrist!

I am an American living in South Africa. I was recently back in the states traveling and went to see Fringe. Possibly the best stage presence, vibe and all around show I have seen in years (Yes in South Africa we get big shows “Live”, “Alanis”, “DMB”, and even “Hootie”…which you must be on drugs to think they even have a slightly similar sound.) Fringe is flying over to SA next Sunday the 9th and gigging around here for a week and a half. Christian music worldwide is desperate for their sound. It has been a long time since I have heard a Christian band that has intense, intelligent lyrics, riffs that are more than 3-4 chords, and emotion that isn’t plastic. You can’t even tell that they are Christian from the production standpoint, is actually sounds professional. Congrats to the best talent in years.

Hate that some people can't appreciate complex rhythms, really hate that some people feel like 4/4 is complex. The album is brilliant, especially Killing Kind and Mercy. Haven't heard epics of this magnitude in quite some time secular or christian. Great songwriting, amazing lyrics, beautiful production. Hats off to a group of guys who know how to make an album, a real album.

heard the album from a friend...seems like someone has finally done it...created an album that blurs the line between the secular and christian genres. can't wait to see these guys live...heard they were playing sonshine fest...looking forward to it. congrats to fringe on creating something that not only sounds amazing but also ministers to both the lost and the saved.

YEA!!!! An album that "blurs" the lines between secular and christian music. Does it really matter? If a bands good don't lable them Christian or Secualr. Is their any differance bettween secualar and christian bands? Who gives a crap if their is? Why does a christian band have to emulate another genra? What the frick it that all about?

I agree …BUT there is a difference Mat. It shouldn’t be about emulating anything. The difference is not whether the music is Christian, the music is just an extension of the artist. I’ve had God experiences listening to U2 or Radiohead, but that just shows you how big God is, and what music is really about. Music was created for worship, and a Christian artist in any form, is essentially a worship leader. A worship leader is simply someone who provides an atmosphere for man and God to commune. From speed metal to gospel, rock to country, the artist’s music should leave the listener with a God experience. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with entertaining, but at the end of the day, if that is all that is done, the artist has fallen short. Whether the audience knows it or not, they are not there to see the artist. They are there to meet with God. There was something in that artists music that connected to the listener on a spiritual level, to make them drop everything they were doing and go listen. We were created to worship. It’s in our D.N.A. We are hungry for God whether we know it or not. And we will take whatever source is the most honest. The difference should be that a Christian artist knows that and walks in the responsibility of that knowledge. So no, the lines shouldn’t be blurred. We are not emulating them. We already know who we are in God. They are emulating us. We just got the wrong people drawing the lines.

Lets me like elaborat on what I ment by that. I love some christian bands and I love some secular bands. But when a band clearly sounds like a secular band (Kutless ?) It makes me mad. Just for the fact that their are hundreds of little CCMer's ready to buy it becuase its "Creeds counter part" How pathetic. I haven't heard you band...but when someone say something like " that blurs the line between the secular and christian genres" is sets something inside of myself off. Let me tell yea, it doesn't get me interested in the cd or the artist thats for sure. I guess the thing that made me the mad the most would be the way it was implied. " that blurs the line between the secular and christian genres" So there for Christian bands can't hold their own and make a totaly new sound that is good. I know that this is not true. MOST christian bands that I listen to can hold their own in the secular world . In fact their are christian bands out there that get more recognition than Secualr bands. Take PaHardcore.com Zao is the # 1 Band looked up on there, along with Boywonder. Both christian bands. Well whatever I guess it doesn't even really matter.

Never said they sounded like anyone…not exactly sure where you got that one from Matt…just wanted to compliment on the quality of the production and songwriting…and yes, there is quite a difference between a secular artist and a Christian artist…namely Jesus Christ being Lord of their lives. When all is said and done, if an artist is not seeking to glorify God and further His kingdom, then it doesn’t really add up to squat. Didn’t mean to set anything off inside you…but don’t let someone else’s embrace over an artist deter you from a new experience…the album is great, no comparisons, no counterparts…it is bigger than genre classification, this album is a Kingdom thing...just listen for yourself.

usually i can take sarcasm and what-not in step. and i don't think i've ever had so much of a problem with a review printed in this fine magazine. however, i have been blown away by the close-minded stereotypes that this review prescribes to. first off (one thing at a time) i've been beaten pretty badly by some very tough girls at shows....not big girls either... small girls (they pack a punch) and believe it or not... maybe it's the guy with the 'cabbage' that can support you? but he's no fun at a show...it's the screaming masses up front that move and mosh that make the music fun for the band. now for the big part. just because we are a tattoo-ed sad generation doesn't mean we're "marketing' to anyone. we write what we know. albeit..i hate all the bands senor kern listed... i will give them credit with having captured a mainstream market. there's nothing wrong with soft jangly guitars (mineral? dear ephesus anyone? or even *gasp*... violet burning?) WHO CARES IF THEY'RE MARRIED!!! that DOESN'T make a difference to their marketing or to their ability to make music. so what if jocks stereotypically beat up on the 'artsy' people in high school (believe me..i was there...i got beat by those types.. but that really doesn't matter to me when it comes to music...) these guys are playing what they know and what they are inspired to play. and the only line that stuck out to me was "sonic perfection" other than that.. this was both a smear campaign against a band that deserved better and a bitter look at a wasted youth beset with too many high school problems. this WAS NOT a review...just a rant. in the future.. try to look beyond yourself and actually think about the music.
