Cool Hand Luke - Wake Up, O Sleeper
I think I finally understand why people abandon their favorite indie bands when they get signed and go big time . . . and it’s not what I thought it was – a vain attempt to stay ahead of the rest. No, I think it has more to do with the initial hunger that is often found in bands that have something to prove; and somehow that disappears in the sterile “make it perfect” environment a debut album for a distributed label creates. I have to admit that my first listen to Wake Up, O Sleeper about accomplished the opposite effect. I was thinking about being one of those fair-weather fans and bailing altogether. But then the soothing production that Steve Hindalong brought to these aching heart-songs began to reveal a strength, confidence and, yes, passion. Odds are, if you’ve been a fan of emo and post-hardcore music, you’ve heard a lot of hardluck stories about failed relationships and that feminine romantic notion of winning a mate back with the strength of a heart’s pitter-patter alone. This might be the first band in this territory that explores the presence and help of a loving God in the life of a believer – and it doesn’t sound contrived. This, again, is one of the hidden sources of passion and strength contained herein. Now that I’ve thoroughly wrapped my ears around this recording, I’m impressed with the bold move it took to settle back in the grooves here and let the songs breathe. Take a song like “Nobody Hugs A Rose,” for example. These guys tastefully weave a song around some great piano playing, well chosen chord progressions, and playful accompaniment with feathered drumming. Mark Nicks nails the vocals in Thom Yorke-like tailored-for-the-song fashion. It comes off almost sounding well beyond their years that could fit somewhere on the Tapestry album and make a songsmith like Carol King sit up and take notice. With the right amount of restraint used, Cool Hand Luke accomplishes a feat that’s unheard of for young debut artists – showing true growth and artistic progression in relation to their previous and outstanding recordings. Much like their distant cousins in Brandtson, they come right out sounding like veterans on their first worldwide release. [FLOODGATE] DOUG VAN PELT

man o man!!! i was just as shocked as you were when y ou first heard this record. It sounded different but at the same time it had all the emotion and passions as in CHL other cd's. Jesus Christ reigns on this album and its great to see bands lift up the name of Christ. There is no stopping the driving force that is Cool Hand Luke!!!

this is a good album. i had never heard of these guys, but its nice to hear this style. its really different than what i'm used to hearing, and they are really upfront when it comes to talking about Jesus, which is a relief. its tiring to ask about a group "do they talk about God at all"? i love it

This is one band that shouldn't be missed. They are amazingly genuine and are proud of the name Jesus Christ. This is one of the bands you can listen to and realize Christ really led this band.
