Awakening, The - Roadside Heretics
In some genres, music (ie. the playing of notes and the arranging of chord progressions) are a means to an end. In others, it is the end. Gothic music, specifically the rock spectrum of it, is an elaborate symphony of sounds all put together to focus the listener’s attention on the creation. It’s absorbing and demands attention. One of the cool aspects of this approach is the throbbing bass that keeps your wandering mind centered back on the melody. I wonder if this is why one often hears this kind of music in movie scenes, where a rebel villain is either partying or making a screen entrance. Ashton Nyte has a great understanding of the gothic aesthetic. Besides modern day mainstream breakthru’s like Reznor and Manson, The Awakening would surely make Bowie, Murphy, and Reed proud. Roadside Heretics finds Nyte pendulum-swinging back more towards a Christcentric foundation lyrically; although he can still make us squirm with a sensuous love song like “Cover.” Brilliant.
