P.O.D. Update

POD-for-web.jpg

When asked about how things were working out with "New Guy" Jason Truby, drummer Wuv gushes: "Jason Truby's been a blessing from God, man ever since the get-go for us. When we were touring with Sacrifice, we actually broke down in Little Rock one time and him and his wife put us up for a week. That's when we really got a chance to know him. Back in those days, Marcos and him would always jam out. At that time he was also kinda wanting to do a change in his musical style. He was always down with Living Sacrifice, but you could tell he just wanted to kinda branch away from that - the real, real heavy stuff. So, we always talked about that kinda stuff. Back in the day, we even considered having him as a fifth member. Even Marcos was like, 'Hey man. If we ever have another guitar player, I'd want it to be Truby.' So, we've always kinda known that in the back of our minds. When this all went down, when Marcos left, it was like, all three of us at different times said to management, 'I wonder if we call Truby up...' We didn't even know if he was living anymore! Once we did that, it all worked out on his end.

"The first thing he did was fly out to Los Angeles and cut the Matrix track with us. Right from the start, it was something a little different for him. It put him in kind of a weird situation. Because it wasn't no small-time thing, or nothing. It was like, 'By the way, we're gonna start writing for the Matrix track. (laughs) It was kinda weird for him, but right from the get, it was like God just had His hand on the whole thing. He has slowly but surely knitting our hearts together - musically, spiritually, everything. He's been here in San Diego for the past 3 months with his wife and daughter. The chemistry's been beautiful. It's been fun to play with him and write this album with him."

The band is rejoicing that songwriting is happening the same way it has been. "We just get together and pray, asking God to inspire us and help us have a good time and let us have fun.' And then we start jamming out. We'll start fiddling around with some riffs, and that kinda turns into a verse and it just keeps on piling after that. Most of the time we try not to leave the session without one dope song. That's basically how P.O.D.'s always done it. We take that and dump it into Pro-Tools and burn a disc of it and try to get it to Sonny as quickly as possible, so he can start feeling the lyrical tip."

The band is hooked up in a rehearsal space next to the warehouse for their clothing sponsors, Tribal Clothing, and right next to a body shop with a bunch of low-riders, and a tattoo artist. "There's this mad, street flavor vibe. We'll come out when we're tired, and everybody will be out barbecuing, designing shirts, doing tattoos, putting hydraulics on low-rider cars. It's crazy!"

By the time this issue hits, everyone will have seen the video for "Sleeping Awake," as well as The Matrix Reloaded movie but the timing of all this was perfect for the band. "The whole thing has been fun. Not to get on the Marcos thing or nothing, but after you've been in a band with the same four guys for 13 years, it's kind of like, you just wait to play a new riff with your new guy to kind of close that chapter. Once we did that and wrote that song, it was kinda like the moving on process. That was straight fun. Doing the video was the same. Not to say that we've gotten jaded to making videos or nothing, but it was exciting seeing Jason and allhis excitement for the first time... It's refreshing to see someone come in and have a good time and it for the first time at that level."

New sound?
"With Jason, it's definitely not 'Living Sacrifice slash P.O.D.' It's heavy, but it's a combination of beautiful notes. With Jason, he's a very schooled guitar player. He knows everything about guitar - whether it be theory or whatever it is. He's a musical genius when it comes to knowing that kind of stuff. When his playing meets with ours, he plays a lot of notes, man, and a lot of his riffs. It's real full
sounding but at the same time, there's a lot of beautiful picking involved. For us, we're getting older and our audience is growing with us, so it's important that our music grows along with our maturity as band members. We're just trying to make that transition into not doing a Part 3 or Part 4 of P.O.D. record. We're trying to grow to make it beautiful but at the same time heavy. Just not trying to do the same thing. I think Jason helped us in that process, because even if we had Marcos in the band, we'd still be trying to get to that level - to recreate ourselves but no so much that people are like, 'Dude! You guys just totally flipped it on us.' It's all about trying to make those changes gradually and make 'em just mature with your music. Jason kind of made it come quicker, because he is a different player and he does come from a different style and he does have a different technique and he does have different people that he looks up to in music, so he brings his whole different thing. It made us get to that next level. With 'Sleeping Awake,' you can tell a little bit. It just kinda went to the next level."

The P.O.D article is just awsome. I am thankful for a band like P.O.D out there spreading the gospel. I hope more bands can get the chance of what P.O.D has done.

Everytime I read about this band in any article, I feel truly amazed and impressed with Wuv on how he so honestly represents P.O.D. with soooo much pride and passion. His sincerity emanates from his words and he just knows how blessed he is. The bands fans feel their vibe, catch on to it, and create and pass on a P.O.D. chain reaction of spirituality, unity and passion. Thank you God and P.O.D. for starting the chain. May it never die.

i just wanna comment on the blessing it is 2 have a band like P.O.D. out there speaking THE WORD and encouraging the youth 2 get 2 know GOD.i know theyve inspired me alot , im a christian musician , and it takes alot of faith 2 rep 4 christ and be around the secular crowd that doesnt wanna listen 2 the gospel. so 2 the guys of P.O.D. , if u get a chance 2 read this , keep it up .. us new comers really appreciate u guys out there 2 pave the way 4 us ... much love and respect !!!!!!!

Being in a Christian band isn't a right, but it is a privilage. P.O.D. is an awesome inspiration. A person can scream, jump up and down with their hair on fire all they want, but what we have to remember is that it is our integrity in the Lord is what will speak volumes. I'm so glad that Wuv made such a point of that. God bless you guys!!!

It's so awesome to hear P.O.D. giving credit to God and giving the glory to him. I've never doubted them, but there's some people out there that aren't sure whether or not the felas in P.O.D. are christians. Anyway, it's good to hear that they really do have God in their lives and I love them for that!
Posted by: Dale on June 27, 2003 01:12 AM

Im happy to see the P.O.D. is going back to kind of like they were be for with like brown and sunff the punk. those were two great cds. Im happy to hear there going to have Payable on Death on the cd instead of P.O.D. i cant wait fot the new cd to come out. I also hope that blind-side can win the band Papa Roach to the lord that would be a great thing. This cd is going to be a great step for them and i hope it's in the the right way (i know it is) i hope that this cd will get more people from my church in the P.O.D. so that they can see and hear i have i have seen and hear. Jah (God) bless every one.
Posted by: mike on June 27, 2003 01:05 PM

The first time I saw Payable on Death was probably just shortly after the band formed. In fact, Trea hadn't joined yet and the bassist was a guy by the name of Sean. I was a death metal kid and really couldn't figure out why this punk band was rapping. I didn't like it. In the next six months I must have seen tham more than a half dozen times. I fell in love with P.O.D. because of the message. I remember them playing with Mortification in S.D. and there was a fight outside. Sonny spoke up and all I remember are the words "no compermise". This changed the direction of my life. The ministry that P.O.D. has done influenced me to the point that I now am in full time ministry hangin' with jr.highers. I don't know if the guys would ever recognize me again (& i'll miss marcos), but God used them, and I pray he continues. Pray for P.O.D. that the uncompermising message would hit Christians where they need it, and draw non-Christians to Jesus. Thank you.

Am I the only one who thinks it's suspicious that POD isn't saying anything about the fact that Marcos claims to have been kicked out of POD in contradiction to them stating he left? Why won't they address it? Sounds a little like conspiracy to me.

I've met Marcos and his beautiful wife, and I hope to Jah, that all fans out there are praying for them. Marcos is someone that will not be replaced....... period.... Who would replace Carlos Santana? No one. (by the way, did'nt Carlos jam with Carlos on his last C.D?) No disrespect to the new guy, but it is a crying shame to not have the unbelievable moody strings of Carlos that is the threads in every song. God bless you Sonny and all at P.O.D, looking forward to what Marcos has in store. big fans, SJ/Sj

God is using P.O.D. I remember before anyone knew who they were. A friend of mine told me "man check out this band." I said " are they any good?" he let me hear a few songs, I went to get the cd. I let my girlfriend listen to it. I said to myself, "This is a great band, great music, God is going to use them." I had no Idea that God would use them in this way! Keep up the good work guys! You have been blessed with each other. Jason will be awesome. - I will be praying, - Jah Jah Warrior!!! Chris

Im an active forums user on southtown, and the pod/uk forum. This is definatly a wonderful article as I know all the others on these forums would agree. I was worried about the band during the break up wondering if the devil had had his way, but I continued to pray lifting the boys up in prayer. I just asked the Lord for his will to be done, and that accountability would always be a part of thier ministry. Well praise the Lord for His promises are yes and Amen. Just want to do a shout out to Shea aka Songsinger and Caroline aka blindfaith princess both members of the UK boards. Peace up Yo and BE BLESSED.

I got to go see P.O.D. back in 1999 at cornerstone festival. It was awesome. i was not really in to christian music back then but it all changed after i saw them and what they did. if i remember they were singing "southtown" and Sunny i guess notice some one hurt so he stop the show and prayed for the guy that was hurt. we just hung out and prayed till the medics got there and then he finished the show. i just want the members of P.O.D. to know that if it wasn't for them i would still be in to the same crap that i was back in1999.
Posted by: David blanton on July 16, 2003 09:06 AM

P.O.D. has got to be one of the only bands that are willing to preach their cause and live it. I am so impressed with their lives and the words they speak through their music and their interviews. As a youth pastor, i have no problem promoting P.O.D. to students in my group and even explaining who they are to paretns. Thank you P.O.D. for staying true.
Posted by: strapes on July 17, 2003 12:03 PM

P.O.D. is a one in a million band in an ocean of Christian bands who will never get promoted into the secular music level. If they continue to bring the passion to the table and depend fully on God, we will see unbelievable things happen. My prayer is that they will not compromise their morality along the way and stay faithful to their purpose. My two young sons are crazy about this band but not as much as their father is! To all Warriors and from Iowa with Love....

P.O.D. has definately broken down barriers related to spiritual music. The members are just real people living in the same world as us. They don't need to preach to get there point across. Their music does the talking for them. Christian or not P.O.D. is an incredible, musically talented group of people. Keep it up. JAH-the one and only!
