Jan/Feb Bible Study

What Happens At Death?
On page 9, the table of contents page, the "From the Editor" section talks about the death of a family member. Read 2 Corinthians 5:1-10. What does this passage tell us about death? What happens to us when we die?

Is The Editor Wrong?
On page 10, there's a letter to the editor (under the title "Flipped Off"), where a reader expresses disappointment in the editor choosing to not have a "back page message" on the rear cover. This is a tradition/precedent that our editor came up with; so is it right or even "our place" to question the editor's motivation to stop a tradition that he started? Why or why not? Read Mark 9:38-41. Does this relate to this discussion? If so, how?

Christianity And Servanthood
On page 15 in the Hard News column, Showbread announces that they are headed to Ecuador to work in orphanages. What is the Christian's role concerning service in overlooked and underpriviledged parts of the world? How does James 1:27 relate to this?

Love And Respect
In the Bradley Hathaway article on page 22 & 23, Bradley shares an example of an older married couple expressing love and respect. What are some other examples in the Bible that show simple yet practicle ways that we love someone or prefer them over ourselves?

We Were Made To Praise
In the article on A Plea For Purging (page 27), Andrew Atkins explains that their new album, A Critique of Mind and Thought, is about our created purpose: to praise God. Can you find any verses that agree with the principle that we're here, as people on earth, to praise God? Are there reasons to contradict this idea?

Get In The Game
In the Pillar article on page 29, Rob Beckley talks about the importance of accountability and pursuing Christ. What are some different ways to strengthen your spiritual game and keep yourself accountable? Beckley references Philippians 3:14; how does this verse support this concept?

Anything Goes
In the Full Blown Chaos article (page 30-31) we find out that frontman Ray Mazzola is an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church. According to this church's website, they will issue a minister's liscense to anyone of any religion. Without necessarily passing judgment upon every license-carrying minister from that "church," let us examine the "anything goes" philosophy that may or may not be related to this organization. Read John 14:6. Does Jesus leave room for other religions or faiths to lead to God?

Digging Deeper
Can a poem or song transcend the original meaning or context? In the Thrice cover story (pages 36-39) singer Dustin Kensrue mentions that he "...document(s) my various conversations with God and struggle with Him. I try to be real about who I am and write about things I actually mean or want to mean at the time. There's certain songs I don't even know why I wrote them. I think that it was God using me to say something." As a further exercise, cite any Psalms that we can assume transcend the events they were written around.

Looking Back
In the "Korn Says" article (pages 43-45) Fieldy is questioned about a time travel and what he'd change about the past if he could. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. What kind of light does this verse shed on the subject of our past and possible regret over it, etc?

Make A Choice
In the DVD review over Amazing Grace (page 52), a poignant question is directed at William Wilberforce as he wrestles with choosing a career in priesthood or politics: "So, you need to decide: are you going to use your beautiful voice to praise the Lord, or to change the world?" How might we answer this question? How will we use the talents that God has given us to bring glory to Him?
