today was awesome. i mean what's better than forming a band, having a photo shoot with that band, recording an EP, and eating chocolate chip cookies all in one day. nothing. that is what. sure at the start of the day i transcribed an interview that ended up being nine pages, and sure i got my interview questions back (sweet) from bloodlined calligraphy, and sure i tried to talk to this fellow i was supposed to interview and only got his voicemail and he never called me back, but still, it was the part of the day mentioned at the beginning of this entry that makes my leaving here oh so sad. i feel like i will be missed. i feel like there isn't much to say, it being my 2nd to last day here. tomorrow is my last. leave a comment

i am aware of the fact that i didn't complete an intern diary entry yesterday, so i will try to cover two days in one. it was a lie, a big hoax. i did not figure out how to create mailing labels on friday. i figured out how to merge data from Excel to Word into mailing labels, but failed to figure out how to transform the comma database that these people had sent us into mailnig label format that we could print out. basically i couldn't get Word to read the format the Exel datatbase was typed. but i didn't know that i didn't know this yesterday. so yesterday was spent mostly trying to delete commas, until the seperate Excel documents started having way too many entries for me to delete all the commas. so that led to trying to figure out how to work around the. and then the holes of teh day were filled with eating and emailing certain contacts that i need to get a hold of. the mailing label figuring out then spilled over today. i kept reserching how to use a datatbase with entries and information seperated by commas. no help. so after many failing tries i gave in and asked Doug for help. he tried, but we still didn't get it. the right after he left my office i figured it out, just with trial and error. then came printing the labels, and decyphering how to use teh printer when it wouldn't cancel a printing job. and then once we ran out of a certain kind of labels about half way through, i had to reformat the mail merge in Word to be able to print on a different type of label. whoo. but i finally got it done. the i emailed some questions to a band to answer for a story i have to do before i leave. yes, i said it, i shall be leaving soon. not like leaving this world, but i will be ceasing to work at HM anymore. that fateful day draws ever nearer every day. my last day is Thrusday Aug. 10th. and i gotta finish some important stuff before then. like transcribing an interview, which i also did for some of the day, and writing some reviews and stories. i also jogged with Doug today. it was fun to feel the wind in my hair, my feet pounding the ground, my chest rising..........oh sorry i was trailing off...well i used to be a cross country runner you know. well try not to cry and i will try not to also before i leave. leave a comment.

why hello there. today was another great day. i completed the next enewsletter and selected a winner from last time. i also attempted to create a back page for a future issue of HM and i had a quote by cs lewis that i wanted to put on the back, but then it turns out that the exact quote i planned on using had already been on the Underoath issue. so i just found a different quote and tried to design a back cover with that one in mind. i also finally figured out how to make the mailing labels that we need. now comes the trouble of actually making them, b/c we have a ton of address to put on them. so i gotta fix those, b/c they have commas seperating every bit of information. whatever. they are just kinda mixed up and i have to compile tehm all into one spreadsheet. we had a Bible study today. we read Acts chapter 1 and had a good conversation. it made me smile. and i learned things. like that Doug is writing a novel. well i already knew that, but he told us what it was really about today. then i just did other fun stuff and design and kept working on those mailing labels. have a wonderful weekend. i am purchasing a computer. leave a comment.

today we started on the nov/dec issue, which for me is like starting all over again from the beginning, b/c the 2nd day i was here we did what we also did today. today we decided which bands to cover in the nov/dec issue, and i have to say that the nov/dec issue is going to be BETTER than the one we just finished. that is crazy. so this morning Doug told Kelly and I to be looking for bands to do in the next issue (ie: which ones are releasing albums and what not). so i did that, although i had done a lot of that researching yesterday. then i worked on the next enewsletter, which should of been done, but i still need Douglas to seend me the trivia contest entries from last enewsletter so i can pick the winner. then we met in the living room and decided who to write about in the nov/dec issue. then we kind of decided which writers to give what story. and, since i will cease to work here soon, i recieved my assignments for the nov/dec issue, which isn't much, and i have to do them really fast. the rest of the rest of the day i worked on the enewsletter, and tried to figure out microsoft excel and how to make mailing labels with it, which i finally figured out just a few minutes ago. and i email publicists. and i tried to stay off the internet so Doug could proof the sept/oct isssue via the net, but that was after i research still more bands we plan to cover to find if they were christian. thanks that is all. leave acomment.

how exciting, what an amazing first day- i'm rather jealous... all i get to do is yell at children and watch cyberchase all day.

you mention doug mowing like four times, i guess thats what happens when great mowers get together.

wow!sounds like you've had a very eventful 1st day...your dream job, eh? we're excited for you & so thankful for this opp for you. its such a joy seeing that delightful twinkle in your eye and breathless fascination at the world you're getting to experience. prayers are that you & mr dvp (aka mower man) are blessed now & in the future by way of this friendship/partnership.pls, pls be alert & careful traveling to & fro!o, & avoid LIVE serpents if at all possible. (however, keep your camera at the ready for shots of them from afar)

hey randall, sounds like ur having a very good time at your internship- ur lucky to have found a job that incorporates your hobby/your passion! im a little confused as to what mowing grass has to do with hm magazine...but the ads and CDs and the ideas for stories sound superb! i just might have to get the magazine one day

hey, they sent out roomate/hall notices today, check your email!!

i cant wait to find out who you put as the cover band!! i may be forced to start subscribing to this here magazine or something. man. btw the two emails i got were both the flyleaf thing, i didnt get the enews thing. oh, yeah, and just bc you talk all about your day here doesnt mean you get out of telling me all about it in person! :)

I would say that was a stellar first day! I'm glad you're interning at a small publication instead of a corporate one. Interns get so much more experience when their talents are actually being utilized. Beats the heck out of just getting coffee and donuts for everyone!

I'm almost envious of you. I remember that sense of wonder and excitement that comes with doing what you love. I really like my job, but it's not what I had planned. Don't ever lose that focus and that sense of wonder. It will keep you fresh and full of ideas!
Also, it's a good time to start your portofolio. It's not just a record of your work, but a diary of how far you've come. Or, as one of our design guys here said "It'll remind you of how crappy your work was at first". LOL! I'm sure that's not true for you, though.:)

the office season 1 came in today!! oh joy of joys!

You da MAN Rand-o!! Does this guy have TALENT, or WHAT!? He gets that from me. :D

This is your auntie Doni saying I'm so PROUD of you I could jump for joy....soon, not now, it's late and I'm old. :D

This looks like you're getting awesome practical experience doing 'sactly what you will be doing after you get that degree =)...I'm glad they are keeping y'all humble making you do the grunt work....who knew lawn mowing was in the job description?! heehee

Am I too old? Or is POD over? When was the last time y'all did a story on them?? They are one of my FAVORITE bands....I'm listening to Rock the Party right now as a tribute.

Two more words...Spell check--try it out!! LOL

Oh, and, ummm butt-lickin' scanner? You're making your poor old auntie blush with that language!! **snort**

TTFN...Keep up the great work!!

PS...this won't take my html, huh? PSS, I want to see the AD you did, can I??? PSSS...you can call me if you need tech support I'm online like 24/7.lol =-Þ~

rand! congrats on your landing a huge internship that should take you to exactly where you want to be. im very proud of you for all that your accomplishing through this, i think your real mature and somewhat ofa role model i guess you could say. the blogs are great and interesting, keep up the stellar work. good luck at your first week! (not that you will need any!)

Rand is a nerdburger. Have fun at your mag ballin' it up.

Successful is spelled witn one L. You need to get better at proofing your work design boy!

....but you're still the bestest! Okay, I'm done. I'm going to go watch the Harleys from the ROT Biker rally parade down Congress Ave now. Vroom, Vroom!

it sounds like you had a productive day! too bad you couldn't have been at VBS with us... it was a blast let me tell you. anyways, i hope your first FULL week of work at "the office" goes well, and if you're not too tired tomorrow, give me a call when you get home :)

glad to hear you're still enjoying the internship. sounds like they're keeping u busy. we miss u at vbs; it's not the same without all the youth there. plus i could use your help to keep my name-calling, crayon-throwing, feet-kicking children in order. talk to u soon hopefully

glad to hear your day went well, it sounds like you will be busy for quite some time with all those responsibilities you have now! i think i will actually subscribe to hm one of these days...

So, when do you plan on talking to Doug about LA?

any way you could hook me up with some sweet prizes? like a chance to meet relient k or hawk nelson? just holler

boys howdy, sounds like you had a full day! anyways, call me after you get home tomorrow, i have some good stories to tell you :)

helloooo there! thats exciting about your questions coming back in, hopefully you can get the story mostly done before you leave. i talked to scott s. today- he was really wowed that you're working at HM. anyways, have a great day, and i will see you after you go lawn-mow!

Hey man, the Pit Moves tote bags you designed rock. Too bad they'll sell out before we get home and you won't get one. hahahaha (just kidding, i'll stick 2 aside for ya).
P.S. Why are you posting spam comments on testosterone therapy?

hi! im glad to see you are updating your blog again, i missed it when there was nothing new. anyways, have a great day, just wanted to say that im home. i cant wait to finally see you and hear more about LA tonight!!

thats great that you finally got your emails back, i can't wait to see the finished product. remind me to give you the money for my subscription. have a great rest of the week!

aw no update today, sad.

hahaha he thought your name was fake, that must have been a fun conversation. im glad that going to work still remains a joy for you! see you tomorrow after work ( i get off 6ish)

oops that wasnt supposed to say michael... sorry

what does NAMM mean? i hope this doesnt mean you will be skipping out on the anathallo concert...

I am sad to say this Rand, but Pitchfork Media gave Anathallo's 'Floating World' a 2.7 out of 10. Don't cry too much...

i figured out where that woman was from- she was in airplane 1 and 2. it was bugging me all day! have a great day, and talk to you tonight!

RAND!
Just from what i saw, I'm crazy stoked for the next issue. Can't wait to read the final version of that Showbread article.
