The Intern Diary of Bonnie Plott:

Friday August 1, 2003
Wow- deadline day is here. I can't believe it has already come. This is my last entry. Sad. We have had a lot of work to get finished today, but it's a nice sense of accomplishment after it is all over. Worked on ads, placing them in Quark, etc. Fell out of my chair. Contacted the ad agency trying to get follow up on missing ads. Listened to some Tom Waits. Made a list of ads to stay organized. Boy, I love lists, and I love it even more when you get things done and can cross them off. We have numbered and labeled proof sheets off every page and there it is. Ta-da: HM Magazine.

But what not many people see from just reading the magazine is what makes it so cool, at least to me. Like it could get any cooler, right? But it is seeing the effort, the hours, the deliberation, the sincerity, the goofiness, the inside-jokes, and just knowing the people that really make it come alive. Everytime I read a future issue of HM there is going to be so much more stuff going through my mind: how long did it take for that writer to get his/her stuff in, what ads were late is Doug forcing Folgers coffee on people at the office still, what bands did they have to pass over, how much work are the interns actually doing, is Doug playing Lust Control and dancing, what TV show is David watching, any new crazy spider stories, did anyone figure out a better way to get stuff done.... and so much more. I have learned some really cool stuff here, sometimes stuff that's frustrating but that you have to deal with. It could not have possibly been any better... unless I could have had more brownie bites. hehe. And we still have our deadline-celebration-out-of-office-trip on Monday, yay! And so not to leave on a sad note I will leave with my bio...

Such a long day, here til almost 10.pm but it is worth it. There have been lots of issues with our advertising, it will be nice to see how they work out. Spent today starting to collect all of the ads and keep them orgazinzed. Proofreading as usual. Ran to HEB with Jonathan for some food.

Well- yesterday I got in a car crash after work. My first. Some girl in a Celica ran a red light when I was going through the intersection and I smashed into her, no good at all. That's going to make this a fun week... but thankfully my mom is coming up to Austin tonight to help with all of the stuff that has to get done as a result of that, after I take my governemet test. This morning I scanned all of the cd covers that are inserted into the album reviews section. This is a time consuming project, as there are several formats that you have to save it in. But David Allen, the smart boy that he is, showed me how to use "actions" in photoshop and thus saved me a lot of time and frustration. Delegated some of the work to Jonathan, hehe, it's an important thing to learn how to do when you normally like to make sure everything is under your control.

So I must admit transcribing interviews is not the funnest thing in the world, but hey it's got to be done for our reader's enjoyment. So that is what I have been doing for most of the day. The worst part of it is that your body kinnda gets stuck in one position and it gets annoying, but on the other hand it's really fun to actually get to lsiten to the interview. David was playing with his new toy, a mini Mini Cooper, and it it so cute.. I also ate some of David's cake, and boy it was yummy, good job Doug on picking that one out. We are in proofreading stage, so thats a big project of the week...

Amazing weekend. Further Seems Forever rocked! They covered Bjork's "Pagan Poetry" - so beautiful- amazing. Went to Dallas for a friend's wedding on Saturday morning, so neat. Played WhirlyBall, IHOP, played with a cute dog, had italian food, original formula Dr. Pepper in Waco ( it is better than the standard DP), New Orleans Snowballs, prayer meeting, pizza. Fun! This morning had a staff meeting, answered emails, proofread. Currently in the middle of transcribing a long interview. Lots to be done this week!

Have you ever played Halo? It's fun but addictive, and I stink at it. But I
really want to play it- right now in fact.Oh well. Several of us are going
to head into town this evening to catch the Further Seems Forever show at
emo's. Should be good. We have moved into the proofreading stage, and so
that is what I have been doing most of this day. That and formatting a few
itmes in quark. I can't believe that there's only a week left before
deadline, craziness!

Pretty uneventful day here in the office. Doug was playing with the "tractor" hose outside, its kindda cool actually, but you would have to see a picture to understand. And he keeps rambling about walking to a 7-11... Proof reading. Album reviews. Customer service stuff. Yup.

Wednesday July 23, 2003
Today has been a pretty day- and by that I mean stormy. And really quiet. It's pretty calm around here considering we are about to hit deadline up hard. We have so many album reviews they are starting to come out my ears. But I am still hunting for a few last pieces .... "be weerry werrry quiet, i am hunting for album reviewers." (thanks nick)

Finally finished "spot checking" the giant stack of magazine orders. Whew. That was one of those activites that makes your eyes cross. Also spent some time formatting some album reviews, a typical activity. Put together some media kits and trying to get some street teams kits together so we have some ready should anyone request them...Jonathan has been trying to finalize a project we started at the beginning...entering the old indie picks and rejects into a database and getting them out of a closet and into boxes. Handled a few customer service items. Pretty productive last two days. Now its tiem to go study the lovely Texas government...
