VALENTINE’S DAY REMEMBERED

My most memorable Valentine's Day was when I was 15. My girlfriend at the time, Debbie, took me out to eat at Red Lobster which was the first time I'd ever been there. After dinner I gave her some candy that I had hidden for dessert only to find out that she was allergic to chocolate. But she really liked me, so she ate it anyway. Her 'puppy' love for me got her sick for three days… -- Eliot Sloan (lead singer of Blessid Union of Souls)
My wife’s birthday is on Feb 20th. Birthdays have always been a big deal to her. She loves parties, gifts, the whole deal! Just a childhood thing I guess. Anyhoo, one year I decide that I’m going to save us a bit of money. On Valentine’s Day, I took her out on a Valentine’s Day / Birthday date. I thought if I put the two occasions together, I could kill two birds with one stone. Wrong move!! She was not happy at all. She felt like I completely bypassed her birthday. Man, she didn’t let me live that one down for years after that. So, the moral of the story is if your spouse’s birthday is near another holiday, do yourself a favor, celebrate them separately! -- Billy Buchanan (former lead singer of Fusebox)
My most memorable Valentine's Day experience was in college. My wife Wendy (my girlfriend at the time) did not expect the Valentines surprise I gave her. Being a broke college student, I had to be creative to woo her. After planting several "riddle clues" around campus, I finally led her to a blindfold and told her to put it on and wait in the quad. Leading her by the arm, I led her to the car for what she thought was a 15 minute ride to another place, when actually I drove around the campus several times, I then led her to a yearbook office that I had decked out like a fancy restaurant. I worked for the campus food service so I had arranged for a first class banquet dinner, complete with my buddy as the maitre d'. I also hired another musician friend who played the violin for that perfect dinner music. We had a great time on a very small budget and some ingenuity. To this day, 15 years of marriage later, best Valentine’s date ever! -- Jason Eaton
One of my most memorable Valentine’s Day moments was in 1999 when I performed several original love songs for families in the Washington, DC area. The atmosphere was so unique. We also invited women from the House of Ruth, a home for battered and abused women, and gave them VIP seating down front. During the concert we gave everyone from the House of Ruth a rose. In addition, all the men made sure that every woman in the building had a rose as well. It was such a special evening. You could tell that the presence of God was in the atmosphere. Husbands and wives were hugging, smiling and swaying back and forth as I sang songs of love and commitment. I plan on recording a project of these songs very soon because I know the body of Christ needs to hear them. -- Kevin LeVar
Valentine's Day has always been a special day for my family. My parents really tried to make it a day we would all remember and feel loved. Every year my mom would prepare a fancy, candlelit dinner, with the table all decorated and such and we would receive gifts like chocolate or pajamas or something like that. My dad would give the girls in the family a bouquet of roses and the boys would receive some sort of "boy" gift. Then of course for dessert my mom would make a heart shaped chocolate cake, which was the highlight of the day! These are things we have done in the past and I keep as memories about Valentine's Day, but as my sisters and I are getting older, I'm not sure how much longer these traditions will continue. I am thankful for all of the Valentine's we spent together as a family and I hope that we can all carry on such wonderful traditions! Happy Valentine's Day! – Pam Walker (Carried Away)
Last Valentine's Day, my boyfriend at the time surprised me with a dozen roses, a giant teddy bear, a jumbo musical card and two boxes of chocolates… that goooood round expensive chocolate! And then we went to church that night and won a game where the prizes were Jesus and Moses action figures! It was a good V-day! -- Devyn
