Rob Houston: So I’m here at facedown fest interviewing Sleeping Giant from Redlands California. Please state your name and the position you hold in the band.
C: I’m Cory I play guitar.

T: I’m Travis I play drums.

G: I’m Geoff I play guitar.

R: So I read on your myspace that this band is all about God. It’s all about Jesus and the great awaking of Christians that say they believe but in the last day He well say to them “Depart from me. For I never knew you for you practice lawlessness.” (Matt 7:22-23)
T: Yeah. When we started Sleeping Giant we just wanted to Glorify God, and totally do the best we could. Not to yell at other Christians and tell them they are doing wrong. But to make them aware that they say they love God so much and then go behind the scenes and do not realize that He can see everything they are doing. We just want Christians to step up to the plate and live the life that God wants us to live and to know that this country should live for Him. We could take this country back for Him.

R: Awesome, awesome. So in the beginning of this band you got signed to I Witness Media owned be Eric from xDeathstarx. How is the transition from I Witness to Facedown?
C: Eric called me up a couple years ago, well more like a year and half, and he wanted to put out a E.P. for us. That really did not get rolling so we started talking to Facedown and talking to JD [Jason Dunn] and Eric hyped us a lot to him so that is how that came together.

R: There is a scripture that is in Ezekiel [33:30-30] that talks about how people come to you and just see you as a lovely psalmist and to them you just have a lovely voice and can play an instrument well. But they do not take to heart the words that are being spoken. You guys have a powerful message one of the most powerful messages that I am hearing right now going back to the days of Strong Arm, Unashamed, Focus, and Overcome. How do you guys feel about what they did in those days and what a band like yours is doing these days?
T: Well we did not set out to break any new ground or capitalize on anything those bands did not do. It was just us trying to play music to glorify God fully.

R: That is what it is all about?
T: Yeah that’s right. We did not have any plan in mind. I think as long as we stick to that we will be okay.

R: I know a lot of interviewers ask questions like “What is on your iPod? What are you listening to?” But my question is What do you listen to during your personal prayer time?
T: Personally I like to put on Jesu. Jesu is crucial prayer music. It’s really ambient and gets me to that spot.

C: For me I listen to a lot of Explosions In the Sky lots of instrumental stuff. It just gets me into that calm mood. That and Phil Wickham I listen to him at least once a day.

R: Awesome, have you heard of worship artist Jason Upton?
T: I have heard of him but I have not heard him.

R: You really need to check him out.
C: Yeah I will.

R: In the Church there is a lot of judgment concerning things like homosexuality, etc. and a lot of Christian hardcore bands write songs that say “don’t judge me just because I’m hardcore”. But you guys are coming from a different place with your music. There’s a worship aspect present especially with the song on your myspace “Whoremonger”. Do you know where Tom was coming from with that song?
G: Well when Thom speaks on certain subjects he comes at them from personal point where he looks at himself first. “Whoremonger” is about him sleeping with another man’s wife* and how he is looking at the mistakes he has made and seeing that God’s grace is enough and that He will still love us every day. That is our basis. We have no problem using less time to play songs and using the extra time to talk to people. Like tonight we are playing fewer songs so Thommy has more time to talk to the kids. We’d rather do that then to cram in a bunch of songs and do an intro. That is why we are here.

R: I was on your myspace yesterday and I was looking at those concept photos that you guys have called “The Nameless Faceless”. Can you guys tell me what that is all about?
T: Thommy and Krissi (Thommy’s wife) came up with that. She got a word about it. There is this passage in the Bible that talks about a nameless faceless generation rising up. One with no leader, no face on it, no one taking credit for it except for God and that has been put on all of our hearts especially Thommy’s and Krissi’s. We wanted to do a concept photo of it and we had a lot of great guys working on it. That’s what we want: this American ‘sleeping giant’ to wake up and be nameless and faceless and not try to take credit for anything they do because ultimately God does everything through everyone.
