Project 86 Concert Review

Review by James Layton

On a blazing hot July 19th, Pennsylvania Project 86 fans were treated to an outdoor appearance at Passion Fest. A free, all day event held at Pottstown High School, Passion Fest features extreme sports, inflatable games, a myriad of vendors, and a variety of musical performers throughout the day. What’s been so unusual about this “family lawn chair” event are the back-to-back appearances from Project 86, for two years in a row. Headliners Falling Up and House of Heroes “warmed up” the crowd, who were already experiencing 95F heat all day. As evening fell, hardcore fans surrounded the stage. It was clear that Team Black was arriving on cue.

Security converged en mass as the band ran through a sound check. Schwab hit the stage sporting a beard and shaved head, his facial expression assuring the crowd it was time for business. The band opened with "The Hand, The Furnace, The Straight Face" which resulted in a frenzied dance pit and crowd crush. Several young girls, expecting a “boy band”, screamed and escaped through the crowd while Schwab sang "Put Your Lips To The TV." The band reached back in time and brought forth Last Meal and S.M.C. from Truthless Heroes. Andrew explained that “Molotov” interprets the emptiness of following the party scene. Stein’s Theme ended the show only to be followed up by an encore consisting of Evil (A Chorus Of Resistance) and The Spy Hunter. While East Coast devotees long for the return of Project 86 to the HM stage at Purple Door, seeing the band at a free mini outdoor festival was a greatly appreciated “gift” from Passion Fest and Project 86.
