Post Mortum Interview

This band was one of our "Pick of the Litter" bands from our March/April issue (#118), where we said: "Hammer on the forehead nu-metal reveling in the glories of the hardcore / raprock days. Simple, yet effective." The song "My Resentment" was on that issue's Hard Music Sampler CD.
Hear what the band had to say in this interview by Kuba:
Who is Post Mortum? What is your message and what do you stand for?? Who are your members, and What kind of music do you play?
Post Mortum is one band made up of four individuals with one mind and one purpose. Our purpose is to instill the simple truth into the minds of the world. The idea that in living for Christ, it's not about being good, or the things that you can do for Him. It's about admitting that you can't do anything without Him in your life. We all must completely die to our flesh and give ourselves completely to Christ. As a result of Jesus in control of our lives, then we can do good and great things, because it is Him accomplishing those things. Vocalist James Kimberly, guitarist Brysson, bassist Jae Harig, and drummer Dru Yost unite to release Spirit-filled hardcore music with a passion.
Tell us the whole idea behind Fixed Retina and what are the songs that you feel best project the statement that you all wish to make?
"Fixed Retina" is of course the title and theme to our latest album. The message portrayed throughout the album is about getting the focus where it needs to be, keeping our retinas fixed on Jesus, and never losing that focus. Every song on the album contributes to this message in a different way. "Excessive Deletive," Burn You," and "Hate Evil," all deal with putting Satan in his place and not falling into his snares or being deceived by his lies. Our focus must be on Christ or we will fall. "My Resentment" and "Nameless Pain" both explain the downfall of relationships where Christ is not the focus. "Supernatural Complexity" is about spending all of eternity learning more about God. "Pro-Life" faces a political issue that as Christians living in a fallen world, we must take a stand and have a Christ-focused world view. "Essence of an Empty Grave" and "Bloodstain" emphasize the importance of focusing on what Jesus did for us through His death and resurrection. "I Remember" deals with having to focus on Christ in order to conquer the pain of losing somebody close to you. "Here Am I" is a prayer of surrender to Christ.
You all live in Ohio, one of the most poverty stricken states in recent years since the economy has been impacted from 9-11. How has this (the economy, the war, whatever) effected your lives, family, friends and what does Post Mortum want to tell the rest of the country about their home state?
It has definately been extremely tough to make ends meet, but God promises to supply all our needs and He has. We feel God has placed us in Massillon, Ohio for a reason, and we'll never forget our hometown.
Who all have you been playing with this last year? What is God teaching you all as a band, after playing for so many people, as you have lately??
We've been given the opportunity to play with both major Christian and secular acts over the past year, such as Mushroomhead, Dope, Foreigner, Disciple, and Staple. God has actually really humbled us and has shown us that we're really nothing. It is all His doing and we are just along for the ride.
Is there a particular Bible passage that best illustrates your message to your Christian fans?? Also, is there one for your secular fans as well?
Romans 8:9-11, Matthew 16:24-25
Who are the groups that have influenced you all the most musically and spiritually?
We all listen to such a broad range of music that I don't really think you could pinpoint a direct musical influence other than the inspiration of Jesus Christ. We have actually been the biggest spiritual influences on each other in the band. We're brothers through everything.
Planning on a tour anytime soon?
We are planning several regional tours for late this spring and hopefully we'll start doing some more national touring later this year. It's really up to our agents and what they can find for us.
Any favortie books, sports, movies or or video games that you like??
Jae is the book guy, he reads constantly. Dru and James are really into basketball and football. James and Brysson love Monday Night Raw and wrestling video games.
What is up with the "No Religion" T-Shirts in your picture??
We are endorsed by a clothing company call Shield -N- Buckler. They have these shirts we often wear onstage that say "religion" with a circle and and a line through it. Underneath, it says "get closer." These shirts emphasize that Christianity is not about religion, but about a relationship.
Anyone that you would like to shout out to?? (labels, bands, churches)
Jesus Christ, HM Magazine & Doug Van Pelt, Matt Lester (manager), Dean Lessman (booking), Shield -N- Buckler Skateboards & Clothing, our boys in Naos and Altered, our families and home churches, and Kuba (thanks dude!!!)
